How do you breath when you swing?

Recommended Posts

Wow! That's pretty funny, I watched his intro video and read his swing tips.

He's got a great swing tip. Being in the zone is done by controling abstract thought.

I think what he's advocating is breath into your stomach before you swing, pause a second and engage the core, then exhale throughout the whole swing. Focus on the core will help remove tension from shoulders and encourage working from the ground up.

PKTD where the heck did you find this?

Thers an instructor in San Diego I met up with who uses breathing to activate a stable lower body...This is slightly advanced yogaesque breathing in which you bypass the lifting of the chest and taking air into your gut .. Ive tried it a bit and it works great for putting too.I feel my upper body floating and very stress free. Hard to maintain as a pre shot routine .Heres a demo vid

Not a clue / not a problem ... which is good due to the fact that I tend to hold my breath when I focus ... not realizing how I am breathing means I am more in the moment than thinking about the moment. Of course, now that you planted the seed I'll likely pass out the next time I'm on the course :swoon:

On a plus note - I can hold my breath quite long before I get dizzy :taunt:

Just wait for my “do you have hair on your knuckles?” thread. It’s the first sign, you know. (Looking for it’s the second sign.)

Okay PS, just in case you were serious and not trolling, I have a one word answer:"instinctively".

I might describe it as 'unavoidable'. I think of instinctive actions as those actions we do reactively without needing to plan them (blocking a punch, jumping out of the way of a car, catching a line drive, etc.). Breathing is something we do constantly, so I don't think we can count it as 'instinctive'.

My reason for asking the question was that, when I first noticed my breathing in my golf swing in the 90s, it struck me as backwards. From what little weight training I had done up until then, I had thought you were supposed to breath out on the exertion, not in. (Obviously, I equated the downswing with the 'push' part of the bench press.) Briefly, I experimented with reversing it, but it felt like such crap, so I just left it as it was. In recent years, having been doing Tai Chi for almost four years and Yoga this past year, with all the twisting motions in both, it is vividly clear to me that when I twist, the motion exhales for me, and when I untwist, the air comes in (it's not really an inhalation). So, I was just curious as to what others did. I don't get how that's trolling.

I may be somewhat sophomoric in responses in threads, but almost all of my threads are started seriously ('swing like you sneeze' was out there and didn't stand a chance of being considered seriously, but I wasn't totally joking, 'Old Dudes' was a rant, and something about Doral being like a Pu-Pu Platter was during a drunken blackout). Maybe my being a voice teacher for the past twenty-five years and a sometimes opera singer before that makes me a little more aware of breathing by default, but there are so many disciplines that concern themselves with breathing that I don't think it's an unreasonable question.

Anyway, thanks for you response.

If you want the most energy into your drive you would exhale on the down swing. Just like a punch, exhale to get the most energy into the punch, or, if you like just like lifting weights.

Of course this is a troll. It is like when you ask your golfing opponent does he/she exhale or inhale on the downswing. The object is to get them thinking about it and to screw up the shot.

What if you instinctively hyper ventilate and have a panic attack on the first tee?

Then you go see a psychologist for some help.

Yes and they would tell you to relax and take a deep breath.

Or, they suggest coming twice a week (three, if they’re behind in their house payments).

The smartest guys in the world are literally researching and debating aspects of how respiration works, affects the body and sports performance, but a few 10 cappers who have the movement literacy of a 90 year old are convinced its a done deal. If it works for you, great. It's fair to say you don't have to have an answer to be a great player. The guys researching respiration might not improve their handicaps an iota with the "correct answer"..

However, a puppy dies every time someone adamantly says "it's this way or the highway" or "this is a stupid question".

You will never appreciate the complexity of natural world if you adopt this philosophy. see what i did there...

Why does breathing have to be made complex? It’s an innate function that although you can control somewhat it depends entirely on the situation both physically and mentally. You have a 2 foot putt to win the Masters, how do you “relax” and take a deep breath. Some people are made for pressure situations and others are not while both will have a heart beat of 160 bpm and be lucky to breathe at all.

What is "talent" if not good instinct?

I define ‘talent’ as being physically and mentally predisposed to performing a task well. Michael Jordan exemplified someone who is truly gifted for basketball while also exemplifying someone who is a lot less gifted for baseball (and thank the deity of your choice he never climbed up on a racehorse).

‘Fight or flight’ is the premier example of instinct. If you have a developed talent for either, you’ll be more likely to be successful in your fight or flight, if not, you’re more likely to suffer a beating.

Respiration, circulation, body temperature, and the like, are all bodily functions and are constant and almost entirely out of our control, comparatively speaking.

Our disagreement is in how we define the word ‘instinctive’.

they're not that smart, after all, they're still debating the issue. And BTW, in whose opinion are these people smart?

It seems like the really good players who have already have quality mechanics and shoot good scores would look to places like the mental game and breathing, because the little things could give them an edge.

The poorer players already think golf is hard enough and definitely don't want to add how they think or breath on top of all the other things they are working on.

For me I can't control my breathing while monitoring positions and using swing thoughts. So if you're using swing thoughts this concept would be really tough.

But if you have plateaued and just aren't getting better it would be the first place I would look because you can do it by yourself and maximize your current Talent level.

How I breathe is not a conscious effort in my part. It’s natural. Though when I play my best I do notice I tend to breath more rapidly through my mouth when I’m teeing off

I tend to quiet down and breath through my nose and prolong my breathing and hold my diaphragm when I’m putting or around the green

It was never my intention to suggest working on one's breathing. It was just something I noticed I did and was curious what others did. I expected the jokes (I richly deserve them). I suppose I should've expected the reactions of fear and horror (as if I'd committed a sacrilege), but I guess I'll never get used to that kind of thinking. I appreciate all the legitimate answers. The big revelation was that some people's routines, from my perspective, seem like full time jobs. It's very foreign to me and strikingly interesting (though, if I ever tried it, I'd last about two seconds).

But to your points...I've not seen golfers under pressure (unless you count having to make a five footer for a beer), but I have seen a lot of singers under pressure. Many of them jam themselves up with air, forgetting the 'exhalation' part of breathing. Asthmatics, too, will often jam themselves up with air and forget about exhaling. In both cases, not exhaling increases the level of panic making nerves worse.

I think if things are going well and you happen to notice your breathing, leave it alone (I don't think noticing something requires one to interfere with it). But, if you're struggling and you're nervous and you're frustrated and embarrassed, and you happen to notice you've been holding your breath the whole time, you might be better off taking a second to return to normal breathing before going back to screw it up again.

Do you equate that more as a result from thinking in a more...predatory(?) fashion, or is it a matter of feeling more pressure from the possibilities of a great score, or 'other'?

Are you sure it's your diaphragm and not your upper abs?
