Graphene is exactly what I've got. Very expensive Protos with that exact product used. I'll be posting a big write up in the next day or two along with limited availability.

I have been in the ski industry for the last 13 year. I have been skiing with Graphene for the last 4. I am interested in what this will bring to shafts.

It honestly doesn't surprise me. When I was a college player, they were the class of the industry, making great and continuously innovative products. The guy who really put them on the map left on bad terms and after they rode out the last product cycle or two that he had set up, it was all downhill. They still make a decent product, but they are no longer considered the innovators or Pinnacle of the industry. When that JC dude left it was the worst thing that could have happened to them. They should give the man a call and beg him to come back to save them.

According to a prior post, they are suing him as he's now "the man" @ Veylix. Anyone with a link to the lawsuit previously mentioned?

Yep, I think JC is behind the Veylix designs. Excellent shafts. I would have though they would have gained more traction, but it seems like they are only known in small circles on this site(haven't even really heard about them anywhere else). Doesn't seem to be any marketing push behind them besides some word of mouth on the forums here.

It's a sad day if Matrix will be going under(really liked some of their old shafts like the F7M2 and the first iteration of the Black Tie hybrid), but I don't remember being blown away by any of their shafts for a while now.

JC owns Veylix and also designs and manufactures Xphlexxx shafts like the Agera. I know JC personally and can assure you he knows more about shaft construction then anyone I've ever met. He made Matrix into what it was and when he left they just kept recycling the old stuff which will only get you so far.

As for shaft construction the best has yet to come. Graphene is coming once price comes down. Right now companies are starting to dabble in it but when it's introduced in larger quantities you will see some really cool stuff with ball speed and dispersion ;)

Interesting. For some reason I thought that a company that made high end tennis rackets owned Veylix. Also thought Rob designed the Xphlexxx shafts(maybe he just helped with the designs on the Agera & BUSA? Obviously he's behind the names)

Solinco is the tennis racquet company. Their name is on each shaft as JC collaborates with them to produce the shafts (he also designs high end racquets for them). Rob did design the Agera and Busa but with the help of JC in terms of graphics design that will actually fit on a golf shaft (not easy to do). The names of the Xphlexxx shafts come from Rob's racing days and love of exotic cars.

I don't know exactly what Graphene is, but i'm surprised its such an expensive cutting edge material. It has been around in tennis

rackets for at least 3 years if not longer and high end rackets are much cheaper than exotic golf shafts. They top out at like 225-250 last time I was in the market. Maybe they weren't using that much? I think the company marketing it was Head.

Shame about Matrix I still won't play anything but the OG Altus Hybrid. The FxM2 series were game changers and still are very playable. The Original HD series were also VERY solid shafts for heavy swingers. The Speed RULZ C-Type was VASTLY underrated on these forums.

But as many said their influence started to lag and they kept Rehashing mediocre shafts like the M/Q/X3, M/Q/X4, & now M/Q/X5 series.......

The proto version for Tour of Aldila Synergy. We've been testing the latest proto for a couple weeks and ready to post the findings as soon as I have a free hour.

Graphene is a 1 atom thick layer of carbon that looks a little like a chain link fence but in a hexagonal pattern. Basically this stuff is going to change the world once the manufacturing process gets consistent and affordable. One major use will be for battery type purposes. It acts as an amazing supercapacitor that will someday replace standard batteries. Imagine charging your phone for 30 seconds in order to get a full day's worth of charge or imagine pulling an electric car into a charging station and completely charging the batteries in about the same amount of time it takes to fill up a normal tank of gasoline.

The original I had was not a graphene shaft. That was simply just testing the profile without the real juice in it. This one is a totally different animal.

Maybe selling $1000 shafts wasn't a good idea?

they would have given away way more than they sold?

I'm pretty sure most shaft companies have this business model. The shafts only cost them $10-$20 to make, they seed the product all over the professional golf world to get exposure, then turn around and retail the shaft for $400+.

Hey, whatever works for them. I guess I'm just a little jaded about the business model. I like Matrix, but I also thought their $1000 shafts were just ridiculous.

I really liked, and still play the Code-8 shaft. I also used the Code-6 in my last driver. Their replacement shaft, the HD series was not quite as good IMHO. But I do have an HD6 in another driver and it plays fine, I just prefer the Code-6 feel. I think I paid around $200 for each of the Code shafts about a decade ago. The HD shaft I bought as a pull for $60 a couple of years ago.

I actually tried the TP7? shaft, the one that retailed for $1000. Didn't care for it. Boardy and stiff to me, but I probably did not have the swing speed for it.

As others have said, They had their day in the sun, but other companies caught up with really good shafts and my guess is as a smaller vendor, they did not have the economies of scale to compete at the price point they wanted.

Maybe time to go hunting for a few more Code-8s and Code-6s on ebay...

@TollBros - Graphene is very limited and proto's are crazy expensive especially with the % need in a shaft to actually do something. Look forward to seeing your results and what the shaft makeup is. I now of 2 to 3 places looking at proto shafts using it, JC and Rob being one of them.

The spin rates on this thing are so low that only the player really struggling with spin will want to look at it. I'm sure there will be a version for the public eventually, but this thing is the high knuckleball king. I'll post data when I get a free moment. I was on vacation last week so I'm swamped at the moment.

Launch angle is actually pretty good. I'll be putting up data comparing it to the Aldila X-Torsion Black Mamba and the Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Dual Core XT hopefully tomorrow. It's sort of a bizzare shaft. Normally spin rates this low would be accompanied by low launch, but that's really not the case. I love the way the new materials and designs are making the old school rules obsolete.

Another fan of matrix shafts here. I always liked that they played stiff to flex. Even the white tie which is suppose to be high launch and spin played a little stiff. I would think that since matrix had some good contracts with major brands, they would be doing well. Agree with others that matrix hasn't done much innovating in recent years.

I'm not surprised and I'm sure we'll see more Shaft companies go out of business.

There are too many options, they are only affordable when purchased with a new driver and they aren't unique. If Matrix goes out of business I can easily get similar numbers from another Shaft company. And if that company goes out of business I can find another company.

We see Shaft tests and Shaft charts that are mostly marketing gimmicks. Spending $300 to drop 100rpm in spin for a 17 handicap doesn't help them.

Some interesting comments in the thread earlier about more consolidation and more companies probably closing their doors.

I'm curious to hear who you guys think might be next?

Maybe UST? They make some great product but I hardly ever see or hear about it.

I sure hope not! I love their products :)

From what I recall Golf shafts are not UST’s core business. Or their parent company at least. They produce prepeg for other applications and industries.

They also make certain/most stock graphite shafts for Ping, which also stabilizes their business.

Anyone think the liquidation will be dumped through Hurricane / Diamond Tour which seems to already get most of their discontinued shafts (both retail and made-for)?

I'm very surprised some of the shaft companies are still open. Accra comes to mind. Almost zero Tour play, very high prices, and no real discernable technology. If it wasn't for Club Champion pushing them on everyone, I assume they would be closed. CC must have tremendous margins on that product to push it like they do. I would say honestly that anyone outside of Mitsubishi/Aldila, Fujikura, or True Temper could drop at any time.

Graphite Design does pretty well from my understanding. Fuji has no tech in fact i heard they just slap new paint and graphics on old shafts. Meanwhile they claim high tour counts when in fact they have 400000 tour only versions not available to the public. Without OEM contracts for garbage stock shafts they would be in trouble, kinda like Matrix ;) And as for "tech" Fuji incorporates zero just like ACCRA.
