Most important Etiquette for Young golfers?

Most important thing: do not at all teach them the etiquette that we were taught. Golf is way too damn stuffy and if you try to get kids of this generation to staunchly follow the manners of the past they will absolutely quit. Teach them to have fun, but in a respectful way.

Etiquette is about "teaching them to have fun, but in a respect way".

What etiquette do you consider "way too damn stuffy"?

I'm all for teaching the new generation to enjoy the game, but part of that is also honoring the traditions of the past as well.

Probably the hat in the clubhouse stuff, jeans on the course, etc. There may be places where that is still the norm, but not at most courses.

Fix ball marks on greens, rake bunkers...........and no jeans lol

My son is going on 5 and got him a new golf outfit for his b-day. Jeans and a polo...

#1 for me (and it isn't even close) is pace of play.

Your position on the course is right behind the group in front of you, not just being in front of the group behind you. Kids watch the PGA tour and think they need to spend all this time looking over every shot/putt and it results in 6 hour rounds at public courses.

When we play, our foursome finishes 18 holes in 3:30 max, sometimes as little as 3:15, putting everything out and walking. We joke around, have fun, drink for birdies and still have time to replace all divots, rake bunkers and repair ball marks on the green.

Really hard to teach playing quickly once they get used to a certain pace.

Being quiet, courteous, honest, caring for the course and leaving it in better shape than you found it are all good, but pace of play is killing the game and why people aren't picking up the sport.

I have watched plenty of jr tournaments, and the main thing I took away is that these young players are learning the basics of golf rules and etiquette, some of which can have scoring implications. Who is away, ball marker rules, pin in/out, being aware of whose ball is where, etc. And I liked that kids communicated with each other about that stuff, they thought it was cool. But alas, the rounds were usually 5 hrs. All of that communication and fun stuff took a while. I would sometimes play and start on the back 9 on the course my stepdaughter was playing a half hour after her tee time and finish an hour before she did. Unfortunately, I don't think jr tournament golf is the right venue to drive home pace of play. When playing practice rounds my stepdaughter can easily keep up the pace, she actually gets impatient, but in tournaments they all slow down due to the gravity.

While golf doesn't need any more rules, I would love to see a "shot clock" put into place to stop all this slow play nonsense. I get the fact that in tournaments you want to play well and don't want to be rushed, and they want to go through their "routine" but it is getting ridiculous when you see JB Holmes taking 4 minutes to hit a shot.

There are so many things that can be done in the course of play that speed up the time to play your next shot.

I am all for etiquette and courtesy, but the guy who doesn't do squat to prepare for his 20 foot putt, until it is his turn to play, and then has a 3 min routine to look at the ball from all angles around the hole, then has to reset his ball 3 times because the alignment line isn't exactly where he wants it to be, leaves the putt 2 feet short and then marks his ball instead of finishing even though he isn't standing anywhere near someone else's line makes me want to clobber him with my driver. And I see this way more than I care to think about from golfers in their 20s to their 60s in competitive play.

When we play we walk together from the tee until the first ball, then we split up and each walk to our respective balls as long as we aren't in someone's line of play. Everyone lasers their yardage and has their club selected and is ready to go when it is their turn to hit. If someone has a difficult shot (e.g. under a tree), everyone else will play while the other player figures out what they are going to do. On the green everyone is already looking at the slope when walking to the green and marking their ball, and does other reconnoitering while the furthest player gets ready to putt. Unless you are standing in someone's line for your second putt (assuming you didn't hole out), you finish up. Pretty simple. And we are jawing and giving each other s**t the whole time. There is just no reason for a round of golf to take 5 hours. Fast and efficient golf is not diametrically opposed to courteous golf.

I thought we were talking about jr golf. These golfers are trying to figure out the myriad other aspects of the game, speeding it up can come later. Your analogies of JB and your own POP strategies do not apply.
