Saw some of the new Cobra line today

Recommended Posts

Was at the local GOlf galaxy today and as I was leaving the Cobra rep was there showing manager the new F8 driver and one length hybrid. Driver frankly didnt look any different than the previous ones has 2 weights front and back ( a la Subzero) 12 and 26 grams. Also has a CNC milled face and the blue NV shaft. Wasnt a fan of the graphics and it was interesting to hear the rep rave about the GBB Epics sales.

The club I was really excited about was the one length hybrid. Its has the old Cobra Baffler rails on the bottom and is length of a 7 iron. Has a real heavy swingweight like a D5 or D6. Believe it was a Rogue 75 gram shaft. This will be in 19, 22 and 25 lofts. Frankly It felt great and I think this will be a hammer through heavy rough. He said Callaway and PIng may have versions in the future but this with the Baffler rails will be a HUGE seller.

Funny how he talked about Cobra not getting any word of mouth. Manager at GG said when people come in to look at drivers they go for Callaway, Cobra and TM. Not as much Ping and Titleist.

Hmmm. The one length hybrid is an interesting concept but I feel like this will only work well for people with slower swing speeds, where the principle of more spin + loft = more carry. I really fail to see how you could get that much ballspeed out of a 19* hybrid when it is limited to a 7i swing speed. For instance, I swing my 7i at 85/86mph, and swing my 20* hybrid at 91-92mph. How in the world am I going to get 122-125mph of ball speed out of a hybrid when I am swinging it a good 7mph less than my current hybrid? The loft can only do so much in this scenario when my SS is limited.

I've struggled with this SL concept for a while now.

Many people are saying, Frankly, Loser Cobra can't compete with the rest of the golf companies. SAD! Also no russia collusion.

It was 90% of the way there, so I turned it into a trump tweet for ya.

Mass=Energy=Distance, in other words, heads are probably heavier which will make up speed?

The F8+ fwy looks great. The shape is about perfect. Not 100% down with the crown graphics, but I may have to give it a shot.

Dicks got rid of Cobra to make shelf space for recycled RBZ drivers painted black. In all the stores I have been to the oldest Cobra gear was F6 stuff. And they claim they can’t sell Cobra. I still see 4 year old RBZ woods and XR crap on the shelf to this day. Not to mention 3rd and 4th generation old Odyssey putters.

Probably shouldnt feed the Cobra troll, we’ve been down this road before.

OT, I am not sure about the SL hybrid either. Maybe for folks who struggle with a hybrid, and maybe still can’t hit a SL 4/5/6 it might help. Not sure what the target audience is on the hybrid to be honest. And going bonded hosel seems odd also.

If that was the case wouldn’t everybody have migrated to the Boccieri Heavy clubs ?

I have owned many Cobra clubs over the years but they seem to float around in a middle ground between players and GI models. Not one market leading product and our local stores won't touch the stuff after being left with tons of unsold hardware. Such a shame as I played my best Golf with a set of Greg Norman forged cavities and a King Cobra driver with a flex 6.0 steel Rifle.

Don't know how much I can say but have seen the new products either in real live or on photos. Don't expect the cb/mb to be that different in appearance..

Thats not necessarily a bad thing. The King MB/CB were very good looking and performing clubs. Wish they would include a black shafted option to match the heads.

My goal, is black MB's (4-PW) plus recoils. It will happen even if I have to order just the heads and get the rest built.

Cobra clubs have always been great sellers. Their stuff is really innovative (the UFI iron from 2006/2007 was arguably the first cup-faced iron), inexpensive compared to most, and always looks really clean. Even their GI model, the F6/F7 is pretty small for its size and is noticeably smaller than M2, XR, and G/G400 that outsold it. I think the issue is with them is their clubs are fantastic performers, they just don't market them, like at all. I saw a couple of ads for the SL irons on TV and in magazines, but you heard nothing about the F7. Even more scarce was the ad space for the King LTD which is a beast of a club.

I think if they could come up with some decent marketing devices for 2018 (its not enough to just offer a free GPS when most people have a GPS anyway) that are going to get people to try the drivers and irons. As corny as it was, people are still talking about the Driver vs. Driver thing that Wilson did. It probably didn't sell them near as many drivers as TM or Callaway moved this year, but I bet it got it into the hands of a few more people and some of those people bought it that would have never considered a Wilson club.

Cobra should follow suit. However, I still stand behind my comment that the SL hybrid is silly and is confusing. I'll have to hit it and see but it doesn't strike me as something particularly intuitive.

The problem with this is the acceleration part that was left out of the equation. There is a formula somewhere for how much mass must be added to offset the loss of 1mph SS. For 10mph SS you would have to add so much mass the club would be unwieldy at best.

I have gradually switched from other brands to a mostly Cobra bag. I am very happy. However, at Golf Galaxy today, I could see that they were dumping Cobra. Let's don't pretend that losing Dick's-GG will not hurt Cobra. This is bad news, and it suggests the demand and sales are not that good. Cobra needs more TV exposure, they need more tour winners, and they need more marketing everywhere.

True, I like Fowler but he hasn’t won much. My wife thinks the mustache makes him look like he belongs on “To Catch a Predator “.

And DeChambeau, I think they hitched their wagon to the wrong horse there. It was a gamble, had he set the world on fire they probably couldn’t have made enough sets of the 1 length irons to keep them in stock, instead he has been an irrelevant player with a stupid hat.

They need to focus some marketing on their shoes, Cobra clubs are good but my Titan Tour Ignite Premiums are the best golf shoes I have ever worn.

Some have downplayed Golf Galaxy and Dick's dropping Cobra, but I think it's a big, big issue. Great stuff, great product, but Cobra cannot create the buzz of a TM or Cally. Losing two nationwide retailers is bad. Really bad.

They seem to be pulling back in SE Asia as well (per the rep I met). Have upset quite a few of their retail accounts along the way.

Shame as I love the look of the F7+, and my F6 hybrid is a solid club - better than the old Titleist one I had before.

I bet TM, Cally, and Ping wish they had Cobras clothes, shoes, and kids club market. It’s not all about selling drivers and irons, which they do ok at as well. I don’t see DSG closing out the apparel lines. This was solely a push by Titliest for more club floor space.

Titleist is the Shooter McGavin of manufacturers and Cobra is the Happy Gilmore.
