I've a set of 7.3's iron shafts and some a few single 7.0's lying about too. 7.0's are similar in flex to DGX100 but are definitely lighter. Very different balance compared to DG's ( quite a bit lighter in the butt end) The FM iron shafts quickly descend in weight from long to short irons.

I'm yet to encounter FM wood shafts unfortunately..

I currently play the PX 6.5 in my iBlades, I will say that they are a "soft" X flex at 125g, I also have a set of 7.0 in a 2007 X Forged set they are definitely heavier (130g) and stiffer for sure, that said my TA Protos have KBS C-Taper 130x and they don't feel harsh at all, very smooth feel due to the softness to the butt end, the 6.5 just agree with me and my swing, so they are in for a while...

3 WOOD: Callaway AI Smoke TD 15*,  Ventus TR Blue 6X, at 42.5"
7 WOOD: Callaway AI Smoke TD 20*, Denali Black 70g S Flex, tipped 1" at 41"

IRONS: Callaway Apex '24 MB 7-10, CB 4-6 -- DG TI S400

WEDGES: Callaway OPUS 50S, 54S, 58C -- DG TI S400
PUTTER: LAB OZ.1i, specs: 34", 69 lie, 2 deg FP, stock steel shaft (White Hot Pro V-Line as back up)

Remember we're talking about The Brunswick FM's, the stepped predecessors to the Rifle's and PX etc. While DG's shafts are a constant weight (cut), the Fm's ascend almost 20 grams in weight from the wedges though to the long irons. The longest irons are similar in weight to the DG's. These are an outstanding shaft if they fit your swing, I find I need to back weight them other wise I struggle to control my distances, They are the sort of shaft that you know you have some extra yards left in back pocket if you need them..

These were available all the way up to 8.0, these are very rare shafts these days. If you find some for sale definitely look at buying them!

Thanks for your responses. I took the club out yesterday afternoon and hit about five or six shots with it I get a couple real solid. I love the feel of this club with this shaft. I was hitting tour balata 100s which I just picked up. Amazing balls that are 28 years old can still fly and feel the way they do. I hit 2 shots side by side which were 85 yards from the green on a 320 yard par 4, 235 yds on a very cold day I thought was pretty good.

I've got Brunswick Precision FM 6.5 shafts in my Mac R58 irons. The 6.5 is a very stable shaft, but it's at the limit of what I can hit. I cannot imagine swinging the 7.0 in a driver. Even the thought of it gives me back pains.

Incidentally, I have some Mizuno MS-11s with 5.5 shafts in them. They're slightly on the soft side for me, but very playable, kind of at the other limit of what I can hit.

The 6.0s would be perfect for me!

In irons, 7.0 is reasonably close to DGX100, with the caveat that the DGX has a stiffer lower section of the shaft.

In woods, 7.0 is stiffer than the current DGX, but I'm unsure how it would relate to the previous iterations of Dynamic or DG. Possibly equivalent.

It was a long time ago, so I'm not sure if I remember this correctly.

I played x 100 iron shafts virtually my whole career. Always had trouble when re shafting individual clubs or new sets, as they were a bit inconsistent. Wasn't unusual for

me to re shaft a club a few times before it felt "right"

I became pretty friendly with Kevin Hagloff who was the Brunswick tech on the pga tour, and I tried like crazy to use the fm shafts. I many ways, the

profiles of the shafts were more consistent, and I believed it would help me find some consistency, but the weight and flex pattern, never fit me as well as the Dynamic Gold x 100

If I remember, the stiffness of a 7.0 was pretty close the X-100 but in reality, if frequency tested, the graphs basically intersected (matched) near the 6 iron. The short irons in the FM were

a little softer, and the long irons were stiffer. We made one set with graduated numbers in the FM (PW 7.3//2 iron down to 6.5) and those were pretty close.

When I went from X 100 to FM we had to use some lead tape to get swing weights back up too.

Brunswick made an amazing graphite iron shaft for a bit. I have a set of Maruman blades (Conductors maybe) from the early 90s with those shafts, and for that era, they were awesome, and very consistent.

I have 2 Honma Persimmons drivers. One with a 7.0 steel FM. the other with a 7.5 Graphite. I used the graphite driver shaft in a lot of drivers over the years....usually near 7.3

Funny, I didn't swing hard, or hit it far (mid pack) but when I tested, I was a very late loader and always tested out needing pretty stable shafts, whether True Temper or Brunswick (at that time)

I'll try to get a couple pictures up later with the Marumans and Honmas

Brunswick made the FibreMatch filament wound graphite iron shafts. Not sure if it's the one your referring to.

I used to have the 6.5 in my Bridgestone Whopper driver when I played university golf in the early 90's .. changed my game

I also had a set of Callaway x-14 pro-series in X flex. iIIRC, these were Rifle Precision 7.2's

I should find an old shaft set and try them in one of my 4 current iron sets

This thread reminds me, I have a Precision 7.5 iron shaft somewhere. I'd picked up a replacement 4 iron for my Vibration Matched set of Golden Rams, it came with the 7.5. It was several degrees flat for me, and had a dried grip, but I hit it on the course a couple times just for the heck of it. Definitely not for the faint of heart. LOL

I went out late afternoon about 30 min before sunset, ( probably the last day in a while temps will be above 50 deg, today was 50, very little wind). I hit the Texan that has the FM 7.0 shaft. Love this club ! Feels really great. At 44 inches long, its D4 Sw. 370 grams. I made some good swing and I was packin 100 Compression Tour Balatas. Let me know what you think. The high light for me was my awesome daughter was my camera girl.

  • 4 years later...

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Earlier this year, I found an old 5 wood at the thrift store with an FM Precision shaft in it, but it has no indication of flex on the label. The label looks like the picture below. It has a .335" tip and weighs 118 grams at 41" total length. It measures 8.5" from tip to first step and has 14 - 2" steps before the butt trim section. I haven't been able to find any of the old FM stepped shaft trimming info on the web. I'm really tempted to have it glued into a spare 3 wood head and see how it feels but looking for some insight on flex. Thanks.

The shaft can be a 6.5 or a 7.0 (same wgt as grams pr inch), where both say net cut wgt as 41 should be 116.3 grams, so 118 is within tolerances (and eliminate softer options), but we dont get much wiser than that, since i DONT have tip trim instructions for Rifle steel woods, so if its "standard" tip trim, and for what head specs....i have no clue...try it off
