Installing a ferrule

When installing a ferrule, how do you do it? Do you install with the T style installer and let it stay where the tool put it? Or do you then put the head on it and push it down that last 1/4 inch so it’s flush to the bottom on the hosel? Thanks for your feedback!

Here is what I do. I coat the shaft tip ever so slightly with epoxy. This allows it to slide easily and provides a better bond. I then insert it in the shaft and press down against the floor(or wooden piece of board) until it's flush. Then I'll use the head to drive it all the way down to it's final destination. If it's a tight fit I will heat it with a heat gun for about 10 seconds or so. That usually takes care of it. I have a T installer but hardly ever use it as you may go too far down or waste time measuring...

I use epoxy as a lubricant to aid sliding and hold the ferrule in those instances when fit is loose. Both conditions can occur depending on the shaft and ferrule being used.

I’ve always just gotten the ferrule on the shaft and then used the prospective head to finish seating the ferrule. The other day I used the T-grip and it was seated shorter than normal. Just making sure I was missing something after all of these years. Thanks guys!!

This is my method as well. Never had any issues.

get it started with the first 1/4" of the tip showing, then use the head to drive it home.

 

use epoxy as a lubricant and to prevent ferrule creep , or if tight, apply 15 seconds of heat gun to soften the ferrule then gently push on all the way, when cool the ferrule will tighten up.

 

to finish, spin with 0000 steel wool then "shoe shine" buff with linen cloth and Blue Away, then lightly buff with old T shirt. ( less toxic than acetone and just as good a finish).

I've never had a ferrule that wasn't able to be slid on mostly by hand and set the depth just by pushing the head on.

I made a wood jig with 3 different sized holes that I'd place on the floor and push the ferrules on. The problem was every depth is different depending on the club and manufacture so I finally quit being lazy and now walk in the house to run in under hot water like you mentioned. It set's perfect every time and actually much easier.

To add: I always buff up the chrome about 1/4 inch beyond the head to allow epoxy to adhere to the ferrule. I mildly sand the inside of ferrule also. I have a round sanding bit in my drill press and it only takes a second. This prevents the ferrule from ever creeping away from the head. Never had any issues.
