Thinnest topline clubs.

jpdx

Recommended Posts

I walked into Golf Galaxy to browse as my wife was next door returning something. Held a number of new clubs and to my eye all really thick toplines - I believe the common WRX term is shovels. Even clubs I thought would be thin were all so thick (Titleist MB and MP-18's).

When I got home the black Nike Vapor Fly Pro's made them seem thinner. The Nike Vapor Pros suit my eye since they're so thin! It got me wondering why are all new clubs getting so fat?

But my questions to you are: what are the thinnest topline clubs are out there (older clubs)? Do the thinner clubs or thicker clubs give you confidence when addressing the ball?

I can shave with the thin topline of my MacGregor VIP 2-iron.......so I just leave it in the bathroom.

My VIPs are the 1990 remake and have very thin toplines. I play them about four times a year.

Titleist MBs are one of the thinnest available new.

I was looking forward to testing the Mizuno MP18 blades but when I saw the size of them I was instantly put off by their oversize looks (overly long heel to toe, and thick topline)

Did hit them but the performance did not make me cast aside my initial thoughts on them.

Which seemed thinner, the Nikes or the ones at Golf Galaxy ("When I got home the black Nike Vapor Fly Pro's made them seem thinner.")?

That's funny. I play MP-5's and when I looked down at the MP-18 blades I thought they looked so short heel to toe that it was almost uncomfortable.

In general forged blades have the thinnest topline, the older, the better. In my basement, my 1971 Wilson Staff Buttonbacks are the thinnest from my club stash. I also have a set of FG-17s and it's pretty thin too. I personally like a thicker topline to give me a bit of confidence when addressing the ball.

The nike VFP's seemed thinner. I didn't measure so I attribute the look of thinness of the VFP to be the black color. The vapor pros are definitely thinner than the VFP.

Aww hell, thems all the same clubs. Might as well say Cooper irons as well.

I'll say traditional golf TR-1 or Tour Edition for a modern iron. I remember the Cleveland Tour Action MB's were damn thin also

Edit*** I remember those Boyd Blade irons recently posted were the thinnest I had seen in years.

I'm the opposite. I feel the thick top lines increase my tempo and rhythm. I end up rushing my downswing, never letting the club load up.

Hit the new Apex MB the other day and that 7i was small (read: SMALL). I was actually a little concerned before my first swing with it. Middled a few and my goodness, they feel amazing

Agree that some of the modern ‘blades’ seem to have relatively thick top lines. MP4s are fine for me but I do gravitate to something a bit thinner like the Mac VIP Limited’s from the early 70s. The 2-iron is something else and very addictive.

Muira CB-501

This. I have the classic MP14 blades as well but the 501 CB top line looks even thinner and sharper to me. Additionally the 591 club head itself is bigger and more forgiving than the 14 blade. Amazing club.

Golfsmith forged blades had very thin topline. I have a set from 1 to SW I put together with DGS300 shafts several years ago. unfortunately, these clubs are no longer made.

I have a beautiful set of the professional grind blades and they are very thin MP33 681 'ish. Great set if you can find them. Mine have X100 shafts

The only beef I have about my 745s is the top line being a bit too thick... not sure why Srixon couldn't have gone a little thinner like the 9 series..

If you are looking for more modern with a thin top line and forgiveness, I think you have to look at the W/S V6 irons.... top line is gorgeous.
