Best new game improvement irons?

Years ago big berthas had a reputation as such, looking for whats todays standard. My dad had two knees replaced, been away from game for 5-6 years. Thought about buying him set as he mentioned starting to play again. Thanks for any suggestions.

I really enjoyed the Srixon 565 coming off injuries and swing changes.

 

I’m actually keen on the Callaway steelhead pro at the moment over my Mizuno 900T becasue I will be travelling on business too much in 2018.

One of my playing partners has always used GI irons. He replaced his Callaway APEX with Mizuno JPX 900 Hot Metal w/ KBS C-Taper Lite's - holy sh!t - they look great, feel great, & I was hitting his 6 iron 215 on the range. I hit my 6 iron around 185 (I play Apex Pro w/ KBS Tour-V)

 

I'm sure the lofts aren't the same but it was effortless distance AND accuracy

I game 716 ap1 and they make me look better than I am. But I hit the Steelheads when they came out, and if u want distance, they're your jam.

There are a bunch worth considering. Ping GMax, G or i e models; Mizuno JPX 900 Hot Metal or EZ Forged, Callaway Steelhead, Titleist AP1 or AP3, TM RSI 1 or 2, Srixon 545 or 565, Bridgestone J40 DPC or the J15 version.

 

All of those clubs will offer help in launch and forgiveness on off-center hits.

Thanks guys. Read about the G400 and hot metal Mizuno irons. My dads old clubs are about 20 year old big berthas. Was wondering if a new GI set was worthwhile. Im sure lots of advances made since late 90’s. Lol.

Anyone that knows, are hot metals forged, or the similar model Mizuno only. Appears similar, but not sure which is forged, or how much that matters to be honest. I had a set of Miura passing point 9003’s but thats my only experience with forged irons. They were incredible, but unsure if being forged was the reason, or other design aspect, nippon shafts, and such.

The JPX900 HM aren't forged. They're sweet though, when I had the chance to hit them. I like them more than my Cobra King F6 set.

Because you can't hit your 7 iron that far?

It’s so much easier to hit a hard 6 GI iron than trying to carve a 4 MP iron in there; that’s my experience.

 

Plus, it adds up over a round and tiresomeness kicks in which then exploits your tendencies.

 

Lastly, if you miss fairways, GI are an easier out and less stressful on your body than a players iron. Imagine being able to chase up a 200 yard shot from thick rough vs advancing it with a short iron. Saves you strokes over a season.

The new Callaway Big Bertha OS irons with the recoil shafts would be perfect for your Dad.

If he doesn't mind a thicker top line and sole then the Hot Metals are hard to beat as a GI iron imo.

 

If he likes a more traditional look, the new AP1's are legit.

 

The Z565's probably sit somewhere between the two and are great sticks also.

I played the G400's for a few months. I own 718 AP1's now. I find them superior to the G400's for feel and sound.
