Greatest Obscure Golf Club of All Time

Don't know if this is "greatest" but you don't see many shaft over hosel irons. I played these in the mid-80's and can't recall them feeling any different or looking odd (to my eye) at address.

Maybe I just didn't have good taste in golf clubs in my college days!

 

Went from these to Ping Eye 2 knockoff (Pal Joey's -- "custom fit" meaning stiff shaft since I was young and static floor to wrist measure so they made them 1/2" overlength which was custom fitting back in the day!) and 1-3-5 Pittsburgh Persimmons (legit Taylormades).

 

That Executive iron was available for nearly 20 years. Contrast that with today when the current offering is often discounted after 20 weeks (or maybe just a bit longer).

 

Pal Joey was the OEM division of the Dynacraft component company. Tom Wishon his ownself was responsible for many of those designs. I built a lot of clubs out of Dynacraft clubheads (and Apollo shafts) and would put them against anything (yes, anything) available during that time. I still have and play with a number of them and don't feel as those I am losing anything by using them.

 

For me anyway, I'm not sure custom fitting helps much beyond the static measurements. How many of us are fit for a club or a set in conditions that resemble those in which we are playing? The driver that works great in a nice warm store isn't going to perform as well when I'm playing in 40 degrees and wind or rain (maybe not so much because of the club but because my old worn out body locks up at those temperatures. And even if you're younger than me truth is yours doesn't work as well in those conditions, either). A driver designed to get much of its extra distance from rollout doesn't help much when I'm plugging balls into an August fairway made soggy by record amounts of rainfall (and there are so many all over this country who can relate to that over this past year. The weather has been a mess and good riddance to 2018 as far as that is concerned). I think those differences are a large part of the frustration that so many experience when their custom fit equipment doesn't live up to its promise. But I don't know how that can be made better and I certainly don't mean to discourage anyone from dialing in their gear. It's just something to keep in mind.

I have a set of these Ram FX Forged in very nice shape that i played years ago...They are going to make

a very interesting Winter project to re-shaft them in graphite as I can no longer hit the original shafts.

Should be fun....

Sounder irons for me also. SB-IV (Seve Ballesteros) blades. I had them when in Hawaii. Great iron. I traded them in on a set of Hogan blades in Montgomery, AL. Sweet spots about the size of a pinkie fingertip.

lil david slingers irons. simply amazing performance . Cleveland vsa irons are often ridiculed but are actually a very good iron desighn. straightest irons I have ever hit.

 

Man I wanted a set if Cleveland VAS irons when they came out. They were way to expensive for a teen who could not even drive lol

Kenny Lee Puckett: The 3 ball putter was deemed to be illegal because the balls alignment were above the top of the blade. deemed only good for practice. I never saw any tour player with this putter, so if used on the tour it was very rare.

And about the same time as the Little David Slingers came the Browning 440's. I watched Andy Bean try to hit both and he went under each one, hardly moving the Slingers forward at all

 

 

 

while in Florida a few years ago I could have pick up a full set of Brownings for $35. I hemmed and hawed about it overnight. When I went back to grab them, the guy was gone and his stand was closed forever. I still dope slap myself over that...

 

But, I have a Walter Hagen concave Sand Wedge in my collection. that gets a few oohs and ahs from people that see it. Everybody wants to know what it is and if it's legal. It was, but not for long.

I wouldn't say "obscure". Only becasue there were ads for it in ALL the magazines back in the 70's. Everybody knew about them, but were probably smart enough not to buy them.

My first serious set consisted of a 3-PW set by Top Flite Magnas.A trimetal driver, Adams strong 3 wood a “no name Pro Gear” 2 iron and SW. Putter was an Accutech heel/toe blade.

 

Still don’t know how I was still able to shoot par with that set and now, I have the best custom fit gear in my life and a 77 was the best I can do with them this year.

A buddy of mine used to make component heads, including some knockoffs. When he did knockoffs, he would send the design to the OEM the head was modeled after for their approval. He did a knockoff of the Doc that was clearly BIGGER than the Doc head. I still have mine. Might have to drag it out now...

 

Also thought the Power Pod driver was kind of cool. IIRC, they had a rebirth a few years ago...

Back in my cart barn days, found this bad boy in the lost and found collection. We were ripping back range balls with it on full shots. Only "joke" club that I seriously considered buying.
