What are you doing to get better?

Build up leg strength.

 

Work on flexibility (my wife is doing her Pilates certification so I'm her Guinea pig).

 

Be rid of the open clubface at impact once and for all... It's the bane of my golf game.

Fitness, both aerobic and muscle (running/sprints and bodyweight stuff)

 

From a golf point of view; My tee-game and putting are pretty damn good (I want to gain a few mph of clubhead speed, but who doesn't :p) so I'm not really going to work on improving them. My practice goal is geared around 140 yards and in and golfdatalab stats - I want to get 65% of shortgame shots to <6ft, and I want short approaches (50-140 yards for me) to be inside 20ft

 

I'm not too fussed for middle and long approaches just yet, because most courses I'll play pro-ams and other tournaments are under 6700. And they'll be improvement in those areas anyway as a by-product of improving the swing

- Fitness, nothing crazy but just making sure I keep stretching/building muscle.

- Indoor putting/chipping. Got a big moss putting mat over Christmas and I'm hoping it pays off huge in the spring.

- Lessons/range time. It's a great time to re-work parts of your swing that need fixing, as not playing gives great opportunity to groove swing changes.

With my return to golf after 8 years away, I have a new outlook and mind set this time around. Here's what I've wrote to my self after Thanksgiving day......

 

1. Having a planned session and routine when it comes to practice. - chipping, putting, etc.....

2. Do slow motion swings to develop feel and muscle awareness.

3. Taking lots of videos.

4. At the range, I pretend I'm at each hole at the course I play. I use clubs that I would normally use to get onto the green.

5. Develop a pre shot routine - that's yet to be fully establish.

6. Work on tempo - found my tour tempo device and it's a game changer.

7. Will have my equipment reevaluated, lie checked for each club, grips changed, shaft upgraded, etc....

8. Experimenting here and there... like my grip for example or equipment.....

 

What I didn't add is "Exercise and stretching"..... I don't do it often as I should. Being an ex athlete in another sport, it's sad I don't have the drive to workout and stretch.

Distance control with irons needs to be better

Honestly my game is there to shoot in the 60s regularly, i just have to go do it. Nothing is holding me back

I've decided that one of two things is going to be happening in 2018; either my wife and I will be having a baby, or I'm bringing my handicap down to the single digits. I'm not going to talk the logistics of the former, but in regard to the latter:

 

1) I've committed to competing in a Spartan Race with a friend of mine in early March, and running in tandem with P90X2 is going to be getting me into race shape, but also into excellent condition for the start of the next golf season.

 

2) The putting mat in the basement worked incredibly well in the middle of last season with the help of Dave Stockton's "Unconscious Putting", which I'll be revisiting after completing...

 

3) Adam Young's "The Practice Manual" has been a great help in bringing the fundamentals to the forefront of the mind, and I've read it in the off-season for the last two seasons.

 

4) This Christmas I received a golf mat and driving net for practice in the garage. I'm already implementing this with the Zepp Golf swing analyzer with video. I just wish I had something that could give me a better idea on my flight path, but will have to hit a physical range a couple of times each month.

Taking lessons. Going through the beat down process of learning the correct way of doing things. My concepts were (are) bad. I am committed though. Funny that we put ourselves through all this.
