Lie angle speaks to quality of striker?

In any case, My friend and I were debating whether or not you can tell if someone was a better striker Or had a more textbook swing than another judging by lie angle. As in - If your lie angle is upright you swing a club better than someone who has a flat lie angle.

 

I told him that's not correct and it has to to do with your body and how you swing the club . But other than that could not explain....the science I guess. I have No information on PGA player specs so if golfwrx could help me identify some specs or help me explain to him further why lie angle does not correlate to quality of striker it'd be helpful.

There's about 30 different things that constitute the lie angle, playing ability is not really one of them. Some are upright some are flat...within both of those are +5 caps and -25 caps. No direct relationship.

Only 2 things: Centerness of contact and the ball goes where you want it to go. Everything else is window dressing.

In my experience, the ball flight is the best evidence of the ball stricker's ability.

The Simplest example that comes to mind:

 

Dustin Johnson is quite tall with an upright swing plane.

 

Rickie Fowler is relatively short and has a flat swing plane.

 

Their club lie angles are necessarily VERY different.

 

I think you would probably agree however, that they are both excellent ball strikers.

There's a lot of different lie angles that can be used, but I would be averse to having too upright of a lie angle. Most people with very upright lie angles are coming over the top and/or getting a very high handle at impact. But that's not to say that is a certainty. DeChambeau's lie angles are ridiculously upright and he strikes it quite well.

Very few of the top ball strikers through history, have used very upright lie angles. Of course there is always exceptions

On Wood's spec sheet that was "leaked" a few years back, his 5i was 60* lie, Pw 63*, and his 3 wood 56*. That's not upright

Except Tigers clubs aren’t upright. His clubs are 1* upright of MP14 specs, which makes them FLATTER than current Mizuno standard and even flatter than other manufacturers.

 

His irons are 2* flat compared to Titleist 718mbs.

Judging from turf left on my club, I should have mine flattened a bit. How tough of an adjustment to go to a flatter lie?
