East Lothian Trip

Headed to Scotland for a week in July for some touring around with the wife. Staying 3 days longer alone to play some golf. Finalized the itinerary yesterday:

 

 

 

Day 1: Cragielaw (am)

Day 1: Kilspindie (pm)

<Staying in Dunbar>

Day 2: 36 at Dunbar

<Staying in Dunbar>

Day 3: 36 at North Berwick

<Staying in Glasgow, flying home the next am>

 

I've done 36 three days in a row before. It's difficult, but big Scottish breakfasts will help. Going to use the electric trolleys for every round. Will a typical cart bag fit on those?

 

I'm really looking forward to playing these courses. Kilspindie looks like the coolest course on the planet. Who has played it? Would be an amazing place for a match. Hope the pro shop can pair me up with someone who would like to play one. Hoping all of the pro shops will pair me with locals.

 

Any pub/restaurant advice in Dunbar? I'll be there over the Scottish Open so accommodations in Gullane/North Berwick were basically zero. Feel lucky to have found a place in Dunbar.

Kilspindie is a cracking wee course, very very short but its enjoyable.

 

Craigielaw in my opinion is the "worst" of the courses that you have identified but its still decent. Its a workable itinerary so stick with it. Berwick is quirky but also very enjoyable. I really enjoy Dunbar, beautiful golf course, flat but challenging with a few very good holes.

 

Trolley will fit a cart bag absolutely no problem.

A question arising from Baddomes' itinerary. How are you getting from North Berwick to Glasgow in July?

 

The reason i am asking is because i have to make a similar trip in reverse: i have to travel from Glasgow airport to the town of Gullane in June. Haven't yet figured out the ground transportation logistics.

 

Would welcome any tips for getting from Glasgow airport to Gullane.

 

Btw, i have played a couple of rounds at both Dunbar and North Berwick. Both fine and interesting links.

You could hire a car at Glasgow airport or get a cab into Paisley Gilmour Street station and get the train through to North Berwick which would involve a couple of changes. Alternatively get a cab into Glasgow Queen Street station and that will minimise the train changes/connections.

 

Hiring a car is probably the easiest option in all honesty. Especially if you have luggage and golf clubs with you.

For trains, here you go.

Get the airport bus into Glasgow City Centre. It will drop you off at Glasgow Central or Glasgow Queen St, whichever one you need. Lots of ways to get to North Berwick, most involve a change in Edinburgh Waverley, however there are a couple of direct services (no changes) between Glasgow Central and North Berwick each day.

 

You could go the bus but you will need to change at Glasgow Central and in Edinburgh.

 

You could get a hire car, if you are not travelling at peak time then you should be able to do the drive in less than 2 hours.

 

Book a tour company

 

Get a taxi or an uber but thats a pretty expensive option.

Yea, just remember it only goes a couple of times a day. Check the timetables and plan around it. If you miss it, its not too much of a hassle to change at Waverley
