Mizuno Lie Angles

Recommended Posts

So my new iron set this year is 3-PW of MP-18 MBs with stock lie angles but built to TM standard length. Kept these at stock lie angles so that I could see how they work and see if I need to change.

My old set was ‘14 TM MBs and those have 1* up right comparatively.

After having 10+ indoor range sessions and even a round outdoors last week, seems that my short irons I can work both ways as is but the longer ones I can only work one way (fade), so it’s making wonder if I need to go 1* up or .5* up on my long irons?

Is this a thing to have slightly different lies in long vs short irons?

I’m 6’1 with good length arms. Any help is appreciated.

Not at all. Quite common with better players to fine tune lie angles as they progress in their game.

I’m 5’7”. I play 4-7 standard lie, 8,9,P .75 degree flat, G,S,L 1.5 degree flat.

Long irons deflect downward more than short irons do at impact. 1 degree between clubs actually is not enough because of this.

Golf companies use 1 degree for simplicity. Not because it’s ideal.

I promise you this. For ANY golfer, with traditional 1 degree gaps, if your short iron lie angles are perfect for you, your long irons are too flat.

If your your long irons are perfect for you, your short irons are too upright.

If I hit a standard lie wedge right off the rack they ALWAYS go left on me. I can adjust to them after a few swings and play the pull if I had to, but that’s just a bad idea. Why adjust to an improper fit?

Thank you for the input. I probably should look at my wedges too now that you mention that after I get my long irons lie down.

Always something more to learn on here.

I'm 6' tall with average length arms. I like Mizuno's 2 up, I play my current Pings at yellow or 1.5 up. Both work just fine. I do like my SW and LW at standard as it works better for short shots.

My MP 33's are standard in 4-7, .5* flat in 8, and 1* flat in 9-PW.

How tall are you? Seems like this isn't such an uncommon thing. Were you ever fit for these irons or is it something you just learned over time?

I discuss this exact situation here:

http://www.golfwrx.com/484068/lets-talk-fitting-length-lie-and-loft/

Its totally normal to have varying lie angle through your set because its ALL about ball flight. I for one used to play my long irons more upright vs std and as I get into my shorter irons would go WAY flat. I likes to see more of a draw with my 2 and 3 irons ( driving irons - I;m not that good ) but also never wanted to see a wedge go right to left ( on a full swing )

best advice I could offer would be to ( if possible ) get your lie angles measured go to the range, make some note on ball flight bias and have them bent, hit some more balls and then bend until to get the flight and direction you want to see.

The proof is always in the pudding or with golf, where the ball is going.

Pretty obvious that I’ll need to go upright with at least my 3/4/5 irons but will have to go through the whole bag to make sure.

Glad I’m able to do this in the off season on the sim. It’s a fun process to go through and get a great feel for your irons and build confidence. But like you said, I don’t trust the hitting board test as doing that for one demo iron doesn’t work.

The ball is long gone by the time the club impacts the board. Its all about ball flight, launch direction, and spin axis.

Although they Have the potential to be a good tool, There is a HUGE problem with most places use of impact boards as well.

If an impact board is just thrown down ON TOP of a mat, as you see All too often, it is effectively making that ball sit much higher than it Should in relation to the hitter. In this scenario, which is equivalent to a lie where the ball is above your feet in real life, the impact board will ALWAYS give you a false reading. It will tell you your clubs are significantly too flat for you. You will see impacts on the tape Further toward the toe than they actually should be, indicating you need a more upright club. EVERYONE fitted like this ends up being given clubs that are too upright for them.

For a lie board to have any usefulness at all, it MUST BE RECESSED into the mat surface or mounted on something off to the side of the mat that allows it to sit a bit lower where the solid ground would actually be in real life. Unfortunately VERY few places do this.

Summary: Do not ever pay attention to a lie board that is sitting ON TOP of a mat. It will ALWAYS give you a false reading.

Also keep in mind that every club manufacturer has a different definition of "standard" lie angle. When i played Titleist irons I was always 2* flat. In mizuno I am standard. Make sure to compare what each company calls standard in each club when comparing brand to brand.
