So we r taking about 10secs?

Yeah, but that's 10 seconds PER PUTT.

Anyone who uses the snap to mark is likely going to 3-putt every green, so that's 54 putts per round. 54*10 = 540 seconds, which equates to 9 extra minutes... if everyone in the group does this (which they probably do, since these guys tend to end up with each other since nobody else will play with them), that's an extra 36 minutes per group.

If they're the first group out, the course is behind schedule right from the rip, and likely will never recover so the whole day is ruined.

If they're members and have preferential treatment (which they probably do since anyone who uses the snap to mark has a ton of F U money stashed away from a lifetime of frugality) they're getting this tee time EVERY WEEKEND.

The course will eventually lose members, and revenue, to the point they have to close and jobs will be lost. The club will be liquidated and the property turned into low-income housing or some other "paradise-paved-into-parking-lot" scenario.

GDP will shrink, unemployment will rise.

...

Gotta consider the ripple effect, man.

Much rather one of those then some stupid manhole cover poker chip and having to ask if the guy has a dime he can use instead if he's going to mark it 3 feet from the hole.

I don't get this sentiment. If it's not in your line of play, why would it matter? Nothing in the rules about using an object requested by a FC as a ball marker, so as long as it's not in your line, I would politely tell you no. I typically have 1 marker in my pocket, and it is whatever comes out when I reach in my bag. I'm not going to go out of my way to go dig another marker out just because the sight of mine makes someone uncomfortable.

I'd hope being someone who golfs you'd be able to make the leap on your own, that I was referring to a marker that could be considered around the line of the putt. I can be more explicit next time, and not make the assumptions, hopefully that would have helped.

Anyways I could care less if someone uses a poker chip that's 3 feet the other side of the cup or out of the way of the line.

Would you be amenable if someone asked you to move your mark two putter heads to the left or right? Or is that another line in the sand for you for having to "go out of your way" for a fellow golfer?

I used to play in a men's club where many guys would automatically change to a dime or something quite small when they marked nearer the whole, regardless of where anyone's line was, just as a matter of course and good etiquette. And they may have only been using something Canadian loonie/US 50c piece size to begin with.

If it’s in someone’s line, I will absolutely move it. In fact, when it’s in the general vicinity of someone’s line, I always ask them if they want me to move it. And I wasn’t necessarily directing that at you, but I have seen posts here where people get all bent out of shape if there is a ball marker bigger than a dime anywhere near the hole, regardless if it is in the proximity of their line or not. Some people go as far as to be bothered by the sight of one even if it’s not near the hole, just simply in their field of vision. Those are the folks I was referring to. My apologies if it seemed an attack directed at you, that wasn’t my intent.

So because I was a single I got paired up with a threesome a few weeks back. One of the men actually used the ball marker from his glove to mark every putt. I know it was common place back a few years, but when did you last play with a golfer who solely used the tiny snap thingy all round to mark his ball? I tend to be a somewhat impatient guy so it bothered me a tad that he took almost 5 seconds to remove it and another 5 seconds to replace it every time. What no coin or poker chip from your pocket, a ball repair tool's magnetic piece that is clipped right on your belt, or one attached to the bill of your golf cap? Ugh and I am old enough to remember when the masses did use those.

I know there are probably a few of you out there that might still use one. Fess up.

You are not being cool at all. It's a bad look. lol

My FJ rain gloves have one on it.

The guys who take the longest to mark their ball are the guys who have to constantly fish in their pockets to find a coin.

The easiest, quickest way: The ones on your hat. Unfortunately, they got a bad wrap as being an "LPGA thing," and most guys won't use them.

Just clip it onto your belt instead of your hat.

with some of the men i have played with or watched, they spend more time adjusting their underwear were it rides up in the crack of their axx. than the 10 seconds for the ball marker. not so much anymore, but men used to smoke and play golf a lot. think how much time that takes up. especially the old guys or the want to be cool young guys that bang the cigarette against the zippo lighter or an iron even to pack it down so it will smoke smoother. geez

If I forget to have a magnetic marker on my cap, I still use these. I love the cheap footjoy gloves that these still come on. However, I take it off the glove and put it in my pocket, and don't re snap it to the glove until the end of the round because I always take my glove off once the cart gets within about 100 yards. My dad puts his back on every time, but he also still puts with a glove (drives me nuts) on so he gets his mark down just as quick as if it was a coin in his pocket.

I would rather play with the mark the ball with the glove thingy guy than the mark the ball with a poker chip guy.

Im a poker chip guy. I can see them so much better. But if it’s close to the hole I’ll either ask, or just switch to a coin if I think it’s going to be anywhere close to someone’s line.

The poker chips with the smaller removable marker inside is the best for this

I accept the risk of being feminine by using a magnetic hat clip marker. Super convenient and no sweaty hands getting stuck in the front pocket. I draw the line at sticking my tees into my hair, though.

While I am also not afraid of people saying, "You mark like a girl!," I'll add that the free US Open hat the USGA gave out to members last year had a marker/magnet on the hat. Perhaps we men can now relax about at least this particularly meaningless issue.

My problem is I always forget it's on my hat after the round. Then I usually have a different hat on for the next round.

And I would need a roll of duct tape to get a tee to stay in my "hair"!

Further proof that on these forums, people will complain about just about anything and everything. Sheesh. "SLOW PLAY!! It takes the guy 5 WHOLE SECONDS to get that thing off his glove!!! Can't he just fiddle in his pockets for some change and save us a WHOLE 2 SECONDS!!! Over the course of the round that'll save us a WHOLE 36 SECONDS!! Hey guys, how about we stop at the half way house and custom order a special burger and fries that'll take an hour to cook?"

This post is being read as a complaint and me being too impatient by a few of you guys.

I say it is not really cool that you would take extra seconds fumbling to mark your ball.

I don't see it as an extra sensitive/impatient position on my part really at all.

I too think you should probably be aware that you are wasting the groups time for the most part if you can not mark your ball will very little effort.

Heck just watch the TOUR boys. Learn how it is done.

It is an aspect of the game that is important.

The reality is it probably takes less time to unsnap a ball marker off of the back of your glove than it does to fish one out of your pocket. Most people that use them, keep their glove on the entire round, so they’re not digging the glove out of their pocket and fumbling for the ball marker, it’s on their wrist in the same place it’s been for the last 50 rounds they used that same glove.

Or, how about those fastidious players who stop to use the john and have to wipe more than twice?

Another 15-20 seconds down the tube - literally.

Why is this in the "Rules and Etiquette" section????

FWIW: I use a ball marker clipped to my cap. Everyone who knows me knows I am all about speed of play. I believe in the past 10 years or so of using this, I am sure I must have shaved minutes, minutes I tell you, off my accumulated time of play. 30-35 rounds per year, for ten years - 300-350 rounds. Mark the ball 18 times per round - 5400-6300 total times marking the ball. 0.1 seconds saved per mark. That comes out to 9-10.5 minutes saved over the past 10 years! can you imagine!

For some odd reason I always thought that using the snap on your golf glove for a marker was the sign of a rank beginner golfer. When I first started playing golf, I was constantly aware of looking like a novice. It might just be a girl thing. :taunt: I also got so much flack from the guys about women in general being "slow" that I became a lightning fast golfer, sometimes too fast for my own good. It can be a curse.

Good god man, you must be real fun to play with or hang out with at parties. A whopping 10 seconds has you upset? How is the glove marker any different than one clipped on the belt or attached to the golf cap?
