Ball for driver avg chs 87 - looking for more approach spin

Working with my pre junior daughter. Her driver average chs ranges from 85-90 depending on time of day - 87 good average. That average is measured with GC2 HMI measuring the speed of the face versus Trackman measuring the back of the head that tends to be higher than the GC2 HMI for some reason.

Been playing the prov1 for years. Love the spin and feel around the greens along with putting.

Like the spin off driver at this speed and AoA average of 5* up.

New TM P790 irons noticed the 6iron were low spin and released a lot. Compared to old TM PSI Tour Forged and the same result so its not the new irons.

So interested in golf balls that are premium balls for around the green for spin, but spin a lot more on approach shots at this slow swing speed given the age, but also can keep the spin down on the driver.

First one that came to mind is the TM Project(a). Initial tests tonight the 6iron got almost 2k more backspin on approach shot which was nice. Did not test the LW yet. Driver as you would expect averaged a little more back spin and side spin. Our miss is a hook so not a fan picking up more side spin. When we caught the driver above the physical center of the face the spin went back down and was only 150-250 rpm more BS. Read 100 to 200 RPM is hard to notice in the real world. Perhaps I can counter by lowering the loft a degree, teeing a little higher, and trying to get above the 5* up AoA but honestly very hard to get more up.

So the question for the forum is what other balls fall into this unique category - a lot more approach spin, premium ball around green with spin, but can control spin on driver. Less worried about the driver spin since we can control it by hitting higher on the face combined with the 5* up average really brings down the numbers. Its the approach with an iron that needs to be increased.

Thanks.

Duo-U? Fg-Tour? I think Wilson balls are underrated.

The differences among similar construction (3-4-5 piece, urethane cover) ball models in approach shot spin are probably very particular to the individual's swing and equipment.

I mean sure, the MTB Red for instance will have a bit more than the MTB Black and there are similar tendencies in other brands but to truly maximize your daughter's approach spin is probably going to take some experimentation with a few different balls.

For instance i would swear blind that ProV1x spins more on approach shots than ProV1 in MY game but lots of people would say exactly the opposite. The broad strokes are due to the ball's intended design but the final result has a large component of individual swing and club effects.

Chrome Soft. Soft and also launches a touch higher than ProV1.

Perhaps also consider weakening her lofts a touch to help launch the ball up a bit more, and use descent angle to stop the ball, as opposed to spin. And lastly and least effective, would be slightly less stout tipped shafts to get the dynamic loft and impact up a little more.

  • 2 weeks later...

All noted should work well for that swing speed and spin. I would say try the Wilson Duo U. Soft compression for that swing speed and really good amount of spin. They do seem to fly a bit "flatter" off the driver so if a low ball hitter that could be something of an issue based on your comments... FG Tour is low launching too.

The MTB Red could be a really good one now.... try the test pack that has 6 RED and 6 Black.

Chrome soft is a good ball but does not work for me and I hate putting with it. Just me as someone I play with uses it and loves it.

Edit: The other ball that comes to mind is the VICE PRO SOFT.... a lot of people love that ball for spin and distance and I think it launches pretty well too....?? Never tried it personally.

Ain't nothing free. You want more spin at that green it's gonna cost you some at the tee box.

The most spin I've ever got on a ball is the Project(a). It's not even close. I love them for certain distances and would play them for everything from 70 in and 165-250 out. I hate them off the tee and I hate them with a full wedge of any flavor. Full disclosure is that I spin the heck out of everything. I have to dead hand full wedges to not zip it back into the FW.

A very good compromise for me has been the TP5x. Regular TP5 spins almost as much for me as the Project(a). Maybe this is your answer?

My two oldest kids (14 and 12 with max SS of 107 and 91 for reference) both love this ball more than any other. The 14 y/o has just about outgrown it and puts too much spin on it with Driver, but not full wedge yet. The 12y/o, it works the best bar none for his game.

I've found nothing to spin more than it, nor have more stopping power. Full shots with a high SS can get a little out of control. Greenside spin is the best I've ever seen.

Although with modern, multilayer Urethane balls you can get tons of approach shot spin with VERY moderate driver spin, in many cases only a couple hundred rpm more off the driver than no-spin “distance” balls. This spin separation has been the whole idea driving golf ball innovation over the last two decades.
