I think acting that way is un-sportsmanlike. He's fully aware of his own situation and those of his playing partners. Ultimately the PGA Tour carry the can for policing that type of behaviour but they're crapping their pants about offending sponsors or manufacturers. JB should be ashamed of his actions, and despite what he told the media in the presser, any reasonable sports person goes home that night and hates themselves for acting in that way. Waiting for 4 mins to hit a lay up isn't acceptable anywhere, in any group, for any money, at any event. Anyone who says otherwise is hurting the game.

Yes, he took too long...

There are rules that govern pace of play. "Yes, he took too long...", therefore should be assessed a penalty. Take as long as you like, but then expect repercussions.

If that's the way you feel, then what about when Tiger or Spieth takes 3 minutes to hit a shot? When it's one of the faces of the tour, people seem to be much more lax in their interpretation of the pace of play rules. It only seems to me that people get all up in arms whenever it's one of the less popular players.

No, Spieth drives people crazy with his slow play too. Been mentioned many of times on this forum.

This isn't regular golf with your buddies. It's their job, there's a lot more that goes into a shot than what's seen on tv. I'm talking to a few buddies right now that just finished playing, apparently the wind was absolutely ridiculous and greens were the firmest they have ever been. I'm always going to be pro player on everything, it's not like he was not doing anything, there was a convo going on between he and BP, plus a huge gust came up. Idk I guess I'm not bothered by it at all, it's part of elite tournament golf

It's against the rules.

I know in my job I have to follow the rules and if I don't there are consequences.

There is zero more that goes into the shot than what we see on TV. You evaluate the shot and you execute in the required time, PERIOD. It doesn't matter if it's the first shot or the last.

The wind was up and greens firm all day. No excuse.

You hear these guys preach routine and we teach routine and then JB goes out and does something like this and wonders why he stumbles down the stretch.

The fact that you are defending it shows just how bad it is. As someone in the business you should be mortified because this type of things breeds the problems people in the business fight with every day.

Threats without consequences = no change in behavior.

People will do what they are forced to do, i.e. if you touch the sand in a bunker, you get a penalty, if you are late for your tee time, you get a penalty, if you have more that 14 clubs in your bag, you get a penalty, etc. - boom, no warnings.

European Tour has put teeth in their slow play rules and have dramatically improved their speed of play, according to Frank Nobilo, with 23 fines/penalties since making the change. Maybe U.S. PGA Tour needs to follow their lead.

The tough conditions are no excuse. It was tough all day. It's about him handling the pressure, being aware of his behavior and how that behavior affects others. His rationale that "I was between clubs" is BS - he's a pro and should know what club and swing will get him what yardage. No one likes to be between clubs, but if you're talented enough to be making your living from the game, you should have that part figured out. Good on Faldo and Nance for (sort of) calling him out on it.

I am really wondering what he was thinking. First taking that long and then laying up. Seems like the only decision was what club to use to go for the green. He could of still possibly got in a playoff if he made eagle. I would like to hear his reasoning. Did they interview him?

According to Chamblee (who got roasted by the host of Golf Central, sorry his name escapes me) he was thinking of Ryder Cup and Fed Ex points..

Fast player Rickie Fowler better have a talk with his good buddy Jimmy Walker who is in support of JB Holmes oblivious behavior. New young commissioner Monahan will have a chance to make historic enhancements to the game. The 24 second shot clock revived the NBA in 1954 and transformed it into an exciting TV watchable sport.

The 6 hour round wasn't solely on them. The whole course slowed because of the wind. They were only, what, 1 hole? 1/2 hole behind the group in front? They were barely behind, but were keeping the same slow pace as those in front, vs waiting for the groups in front to clear.

These guys should be allowed to play ready golf.

Shouldn't they be ready anyway? Isn't that part of the problem? I can't tell you how many times I've seen 2 guys in the fairway, and the first one is getting his numbers and getting ready to hit, and the 2nd guy is standing there doing nothing. Then after the 1st person hits, the 2nd guy decides to get his numbers and look at the yardage book a zillion times between each practice swing (I'm talking about you Jordan) and then they decide to hit. Shoudln't

Shouldn't that all have been done with already?

The PGA should be ashamed of themselves in my view. Hopefully from this Holmes incident they’ll start enforcing their own rules, like the European tour has been...

The PGA TOUR rules for pace of play includes the 40-second time limit, but also allows an extra 20 seconds (for a total of 60 seconds) under the following circumstances:

> The first player to play a stroke on a par-3 hole

> The first player to play a second stroke on a par-4 or par-5 hole

> The first player to play a third stroke on a par-5 hole

> The first player to play around the putting green

> The first player to play on a putting green

Under both sets of guidelines, the timing of a stroke on the putting green begins after a player has been allowed a reasonable amount of time to mark, lift, clean and replace his ball, repair his ball mark and other ball marks on his line of putt and remove loose impediments on his line of putt.

On the 18th hole, Holmes took 4mins 10sec to play his second shot. Unbelievably, after all this time he decided to lay up to the par five.

The heart went out to Sweden's Alex Noren who was waiting patiently for his own turn, knowing that a birdie would hand him his first PGA Tour title. Ryan Palmer was also in the group.

Until the PGA grows a pair and they drop, it's not going to change. According to MD,bsome of the players were defending JB which shows how deep rooted this mentality is in golf. Every player who hates slow play and/ or loves the game should be contacting the commissioner because this crap hurts us all.

Buckeye, from what I saw of it this morning, Jimmy Walker was the only player who defended him. I think there were at least four or five (Calc, Luke Donald, Flesch, can’t remember the others right now) who were pretty strong with their criticisms.

Jimmy Walker just went way down in my estimations on twitter.

Some Pros are just sitting on their jets home pissing on the game from 35'000ft. Sad and disappointing.

I can't believe how long he took on 18. I think I heard some boo's from the crowd as he walked up to his eventual putt. All that time to hit a garbage shot? He should have just gone for it.

that was a first for me - the crowd getting on a player to pull the shot already..............well, there was sergio.

The PGA Tour is an entertainment product and at this point the vast majority of its income is from television. If it tv ratings decline so will its income. The glacial pace of play is not entertaining and IMHO will contribute to a reduction in ratings.

This thread proves beyond any doubt that we are out for blood.

I literally LOL'd at this

I had the tournament paused for about 10 minutes right at the end there. Well, my TV remote has this button that jumps forward 30 seconds every time the button is pressed and when they were in 18 fairway I pressed it like 6 times and JB still didn't hit. It was then I knew JB had F'ed up.

That group's round clocked in at around 6hrs. And people think baseball is long...
