USGA Events... What to expect?

Recommended Posts

All,

Im playing in my first USGA event this May and wanted to know if anyone who has played in the Am, Amateur Four-Ball, etc can give me an idea of what to expect? Im beyond excited to play in the Four-Ball Championship with my partner and was hoping to get some tips, tricks, and recommendations from the forum so that I am as prepared as possible for what is coming.

Thanks!

SM

Besides all the normal playing practice round and taking good notes , I would say prepare yourself for slow golf since it is bigger stage tournaments. Pace will be slow and you can’t let it get to you. Also just relax breathe and have fun , if you do that you will be fine. Just accept the fact you will hit some bad shots even make some bogeys due to nerves but you will also hit some good with some birdies. And Boomer Sooner !! I am out here in altus

Boomer Sooner, although not much of that today. I play lots of State Ams, USGA qualifiers, and State Mid Ams so Im used to the slower play. What Im trying to understand is how the ambience is, venue prep, how is the rough, greens, etc. Im really excited and looking forward to this event to say the least and just want to hear some experiences from folks who have either played the Four-Ball or other USGA events recently.

SOONER,

I'll be at the Fourball as well. I've previously played in one Fourball and 4 Mid-Ams. Prepare yourself for one of the best weeks of your life. Qualifying for, and playing in, a USGA event is the pinnacle of amateur golf. Each one has their own charm but I'll list out some basics to expect.

The USGA and the host course go out of their way to make you feel welcome and special to have qualified.

World class course conditions and set-up. You'll get to see first hand how good a USGA set-up is.

A great gift or two for participating.

The players reception is usually a fun event with a guest speaker (I've seen Lou Holtz, Michael Bloomberg, etc.)

ProV1 range balls

Ropes are up, signs for each hole, walking scorers, some spectators, unbelievable volunteers.. it feels like a tour event with much fewer people watching

Course Set-up for the Fourball will most likely be long or stretched out. Usually USGA events play extremely fast and firm unless there is rain leading up to or during the event, and being that it is in Florida it may not be too baked out due to precipitation. Green speeds are usually 12+. Rough is usually at least 4 inches or more. Expect a course set-up that won't let you fake it around the course. It will most likely be set-up to demand quality shots for good results. Hole locations will be very well thought out and planned. The USGA will try to give us a major-lite set up basically.

Hope that helps give you a small idea of what to expect. But like I said, each event is a little different so I might be a little off. Just prepare yourself for an extremely fun week.

This is exactly what I was looking for in a response. Thanks a ton, shoot me a DM and we can link up at the reception or play a practice round while we are down there. Good luck, see you soon!

I can't talk too much to the course set up because I played at Pinehurst last year and that is a much different animal than you will see this year. Everything was first class and amazing. As stated above, expect the best golf week of your life. How you are treated and the mechanics of how they run the event are second to none. If you have a preferential practice round time, make sure you log in the second it opens to get reservations because they will fill up within a couple hours. I also wished we would have ponied up for caddies. We carried our own which wasn't too taxing, but it would have been nice to have one less thing to worry about when playing. The environment will be amazing and for a week you will feel like you're a professional golfer.

Ill be there as well. 2nd 4ball, a mid am, and a state team event...ha they messed up the badges that year so I also have one that says my name and US Senior Womens Am so I count that as well.

Forty is right. USGA events are unreal. Roped off areas for players and caddies only, perfect practice areas, good practice golf balls, nice practice greens, and perfect courses. All the USGA events I have played have been up north so the rough was nice and thick, manageable but you dont want to be hitting 6 irons or higher out of them and chipping is always difficult. Im wondering how the Bermuda rough will play in Florida...should be fun.

You will spend about 30 min on Wednesday going thru the check in process, taking a pic, making sure your info is correct, and picking up your goody bag. They will give you a card for each course with the distance each hole will play and two yardage books for each course, one for you and caddy. Then you will pick up the goodies. At Winged Foot two years ago we got a nice belt with the US Am 4 ball logo on it and a set of 4 tumbler cups with the US Am 4ball logo on them. All my buddies who have gone to the mid am the last few years got driver covers so Im wondering what this years goodies will be. Oh and your name is velcroed onto the caddie bibs so when you are done for the tourney you can take the name with you. Ha my buddy's caddie didnt know what to do and took the whole bib from WInged Foot.

I played in two Public Links Championships in '73 and '75 and the fairways both times were right around 30 yards wide. It looked like trying to hit a ribbon from the tee. Also on some holes they had set it up for quite a bit of carry off the tee before you reached the fairway.

Fast greens and some holes were cut only 15 feet from the edge of the green. Sometimes cut right on top of a small mound. It is a test of your game and how mentally strong you are. But it's also so much fun.

Good luck to yall. My partner is driving down Wed/Thur and wanted a later time so my caddy and I are checking in Wed, renting a car, and driving down to Miami for Marlins/Dodgers game. Got real good tickets cheap. Two years ago at Winged Foot my partner scored great seats for Yankees game.

Nice, good idea. Travel from Vegas takes two flights and all day to get into West Palm Beach. I leave mid day Vegas time and arrive around midnight Tuesday/Wednesday AM. Shoot me a DM and we can link up for a beer or hit some balls together. Best of luck!

I just checked and it looks awful...60-80% just about the whole time we are down there...Wonder what they will do if all those rounds get cancelled because of weather. A lot of people have probably booked their flights for Monday or Tuesday.

Im wondering the same thing, however Florida has relatively sandy soil in that area and should drain well. I expect we will play in the rain so long as lightning isn't an issue. Brb, going to buy an umbrella because I live in Vegas. lmao

HAHAHA! 100% no, I will not be wearing that. I'll probably have a typical blue blazer on. I'll be the 6'2" tall, old man with a stiff cocktail in hand. My partner and I are 44 & 42 years old respectively.

On a side note, I will be doing a daily journal for Amateurgolf.com on my experiences at the event.

I'm not 100% sure. The first few USGA player dinners I attended were coat, tie, and slacks. The last couple I went to were country club casual. I'd shoot Rob Doone with the USGA an email. He's the point man for the event from the USGA.

Anyone see their tee times yet?

Just curious what your teams shot at the Four-Ball qualifiers to get in to the main tournament? My friend and I want to try a qualifier in the next year or two once our schedules lighten up and vacation time becomes available?

Both times I've qualified my partner and I have shot 63 & 64 with not much room to spare.

We shot 64 (-8) at Annandale (used to host the Mississippi PGA event) and tied for first with one other team 2 years ago. Then this year we shot 63 (-8) at Laurel and won by a shot over the second place team. Laurel is a very tough golf course.

Anyone know what happens if everything gets rained out? Im hoping for the best but planning for the worst. Its supposed to pour in that part of Florida today-Sunday. Gotta Imagine the course is going to be too wet if it keeps raining. No way the USGA would cancel the entire event?

I'm guessing they will try to get some of our stroke play rounds completed over the weekend and then maybe push match play back a day. I'm guessing we'll be playing the stroke play portion through monday if the forecast holds up.

We shot 66 at Poppy Hills and got into a 3 for 2 alternate playoff as the last group came in and bumped us out of the last spot. We got our alternate acceptance call in early Feb before most of the qualifying was even done. When I asked how they were able to do that they told me it was based on our strength of field, the fact that we only had 2 qualifying spots and were very close to having 3 spots, and course difficulty. Actually typing this on my first flight on my way to So. FL. Excited to take part in the festivities.

Just curious what your teams shot at the Four-Ball qualifiers to get in to the main tournament? My friend and I want to try a qualifier in the next year or two once our schedules lighten up and vacation time becomes available?

Its been pretty dry today from what I have seen. With no carts on the course Im fully expecting to play in rain without any lightning. Hopefully there isnt too much of a delay, and Im crossing my fingers for better weather, but its not looking favorable.
