One of the best looking, best feeling blades ever made. Don White designed...can't go wrong. Although I thought they were Miura forged.

Wow, there's a lot of misinformation. I wish people were a bit more careful.

First PMBs were forged domestically by Cornell in Chicago. Second, Don White didn't design them. Don didn't design clubs, he ground or "polished" them them to someone else's design. I'd bet anything he made the forging models but the idea/design would have come from someone else. Who? I have no idea, at that time it could have been Jim Bode or maybe Clay Long, although there were lots of talented people at MacGregor.

As far as the club, they're the last great Mac production set in my mind. The forging/polishing/finishing work of the 1025 VIP vfoils that replaced them was far inferior. So was the profile (to my eye), particularly the leading edge.

The PMB had a classic Mac shape with a lovely toe, dead straight leading edge, and a narrow sole without a lot a of camber or rocker. They also had very traditional lofts with a 49* pw (although a pretty modern standard length of 38" in a 5 iron). The sole is pretty noticeable different than what is common today. The one big downside for me is the offset in the 1-5. While the mid and short irons were lovely with basically no offset, the 1-5 had progressive offset, with quite a bit in the longest irons. You can see the muscle of the 1 iron at address which is quite off-putting.

I should be more careful; don’t want to hurt anyone.

Granted I was a bit overdramatic.

But one thing gets said and then people run with it. To hear golfwrx tell it Don White designed every iron Mac ever made and ground most of them as well (not to mention the Cobras) and Miura/Mizuno are still making Tiger's clubs!

Found a thread from 2007 discussing who forged the PMB! Answer is same!

Cornell was doing most of MacGregor's forging at that time including the blanks that models and pros' clubs were made from.

The other thing about the PMBs is that they were very expensive. Like close to 50% more than the other top of the line blades. Quality was second to none, but so were some others like Hogan and Ram. I'm not sure how successful that strategy was because with the 1025s the price and quality both came down notably.

  • 3 years later...

He has Mac tourney pcb tours and still plays them with his Mac vip Forged wedges, but always wanted the pmb’s just because they looked like a billion bucks!

In the top 10 of loveliest blades ever made...picking a 3iron from 195 out over water is a recurring dream/nightmare...
