He must like a manual wind watch as opposed to automatic while playing. Always the fear an auto gets out of whack because of the forces of the golf swing.

 

I don’t think Rolex make another manual wind. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I wouldn't call the Richard mille ugly. It isn't my taste in watches but you must appreciate it for what it is.

 

I'd wear my automatic rolex golfing but it bothers me being so heavy. I don't like wearing a watch golfing; not an issue with the Mille. Also see a lot of AP guys, none of whom wear their watches golfing. It is the precious metals more so than the automatic feature that adds a lot of weight.

I definitely appreciate Richard Mille watches from a technical standpoint, in that respect they are works of art. From an aesthetic point of view, however, they are truly horrendous (IMHO of course).

I like Phil's watch...nice look. I wear my automatic while playing and play well over 100 rounds/year. In fact I almost never take it off, even wear it to the gym. It's over 10 years old and I've never had a problem with it and only once had it in for routine/recommended authorized service.

Im a total watch dork, as well as golf, and for those wondering why Phil has on an older Rolex Cellini its because its manual wind. At around 120 mph and the level of shock on his left wrist it could severely damage the rotor on an automatic model. The manual wind therefore has much greater shock absorption and less chance of damage on the golf course. This is also true, and it was made to be ultralight, for the unfortunate $500k Richard Mille Bubba wears.

 

anyways, at a lower swing speed probably not a big worry, but if your a fast swinger, be careful with those automatic watches!

 

Those leftys have an advantage too, wearing a watch on your lead wrist and trying to golf is not comfortable, Bubba and Phil wear it on their trail wrist, and I don't know about bubba, but Phil does it because he's a righty in everything else he does.
