The first time you (intentionally) broke your club?

Recommended Posts

What’s your story? Have you broken any since?

I was probably 17 in a JR Golf tournament, and had got off to a terrible start through 4....hit my tee shot on the par 5 5th into a hazard and tried to hit it out, only to blade it into more of the same hazard. Lost my cool and smashed my 5 iron over my bag and broke the shaft off at the grip. Miraculously, it didn’t break any other clubs, but I swear I needed to hit that 5 iron more times in that round than ever before.

Haven’t broken one since, and can’t see myself ever doing it again....got the ol temper in check these days.

When I was late teens, early 20's was kind of a hothead. I stopped throwing them in my teens, but I would snap them over my knee and quietly put them back in the bag every so often when they pissed me off. I know I put at least 4 replacement shafts in a certain Eye2 L wedge.

Doing it this way provides not only a 100% rate of success, but you aren't being a complete douchebag endangering other people and making a scene. Not that it is any less ridiculous.

True, 100% acceptance of whatever just happened is one of the most important skills in golf.

Makes no sense to me at all.

If someone is not happy with the way they are playing with 14 clubs, do they really think they will do better with only 13?

Maybe if their car breaks down they should get out and kick it?

Can't get reception on their phone? Yea smashing it will help.

Was playing in a high school golf tournament. Was playing fantastic and I blew up on 17 and 18. 17 hit my first ball OB and then bogeyed the hole, was a par 4. Then on 18 sprayed a 3 wood into the water, took a drop, and then bladed my third shot OB left and long. Took that 7 iron and slammed it against my bag, snapping the shaft. Went on to a nice solid 8. Finished with a 78. I was a hot head in my younger days. Thankfully I have cooled off and just am out to enjoy the rounds.

Oddly enough, I learned my lesson cheaply.

I was a few days out from taking my wedge through 4 iron to my clubfitter to swap shafts. I wasn't having a good day with my wedges, and thinned another 30ish yard pitch over the green (did it multiple times that day). Frustrated, I flippantly tossed my lob wedge towards the golf cart and it came off my hand like end-over-end a helicopter. it hit the 1x1" upright post of the cart roof on the edge and folded like a taco right above the hosel. I'd never seen a shaft fail with such little (percieved) effort, it wasn't a hard throw and the club was bent 90*. Luckily, it was the end of the round and it was getting reshafted anyways in a couple days. Since then, I haven't done that with a club.

A bag of left-handed junk.

when I was around 16-17, I was playing a comp and was playing fairly well until I had 2 really bad holes. On the next I was playing 5 wood second shot, as I saw the ball hooking out of bounds I released the club on the follow through. This then proceeded to fly over some trees into a reservoir. Lucky for me there was not much water, and lucky for me as I chased after it. The only problem it had it the rocks on the side and messed up the clubhead. The other lucky part was it missed a couple enjoying a view of the water......

Safe to say I haven't done this since and found the funny side of being a hacker!

My one incident happened back in 2011. I'd started playing golf a year prior and had a TaylorMade Rescue 09 hybrid that I used a ton because, like most beginners, I hit nothing but huge banana slices with my driver. During this particular round, I hit the hybrid on six consecutive non-putting shots, which were all somewhere between subpar and atrocious. After the sixth shot, I gave it the

(1:45 mark).

Now, I would never do this with an expensive club or one that was in good condition, but the hybrid was beaten to hell and had a cheap shaft so I didn't care. Since I'm very even-keeled, the three work friends I was playing with thought it was hilarious.

Never broken one on purpose myself (I suppose it's diminished expectations that allow me to say this) but I used to play with a guy who broke every club in his 09 TM Burner set over the course of 4 to 5 months of weekly play. Started with his 8 iron if I remember correctly.

Man, he loved those clubs though. Best irons he'd ever had.

My first was one of the old Pre Vokey Titleist 56* wedges in a tournament in HS. I was a freshman and I bladed like 4 bunker shots in a row on a par 5 (I was in the green side bunker in 2). Once I got the ball out of the bunker finally I helicoptered the wedge towards my coaches golf cart and it wrapped around the roof post and snapped in half. Coach pulled me off the course and made me call my dad and tell him what I did. My dad restarted the wedge, put it on a shelf in my room but wouldn’t let me touch it for a year. Made me finish that golf season plus the next season with only a PW...and made me repay him for the reshaft. Lesson learned.

I threw a club, not really a full blown throw but more like a pitch of 10-15 yards from a bunker to my golf bag in college while my dad was watching. He took that wedge away immediately and didn’t give it back til Christmas. He even acknowledged that it was 100% out of anger but still wanted to prove a point.

Holy smokes I broke a ton of clubs in high school. Don’t remember the first one but several stand out - slamming a wedge into a tree stump until it was sufficiently broken and unrecoverable, a 9 iron hurled vertically that landed at about a 88 degree angle and torque snapped in half. My 3 wood went through at least a dozen shafts. I learned some great club repair skills and I think I got a bulk discount on TT Dynamic Gold s300 from Maltby’s. I mellowed out my senior year and through college I was known as the guy that never lost his cool. I’m glad I grew out of it, but pretty funny looking back on some of the things I did. A few putters never stood a chance.

I had this putter, an old Carbite blade putter, thing felt so good, and I loved putting with it, but I never made ANYTHING with it.

Finally broke it over my knee at the 7th hole at my home course after missing another 3 footer ... did it to put myself out of my misery so I'd never me tempted to putt with it again.

Reshafted and gripped it and went back to it like an addict.

Finally shipped it off as a trade in to get it out of my life.

I had only been playing a few months and had never gotten angry enough to throw a club when I witnessed what could only be described as a life lesson. Playing barefoot as a single in Key West paired up with a couple spring breakers. We are all in our early 20s and we all three suck at golf. Sometime during that fateful round one the guys I was paired with gets pissed and takes a big swing at the ball washer. Shaft hits the washer pole and mostly snaps, the club end does a full turn and drills this dude straight the chest, dead center solar plexus. Dude drops like laundry. His buddy carted him off and I cant remember much else about the day.

So.. no. I have never broken a club in anger.

Same here

A great many wedges have been helicoptered in my time, a subset of which have accidentally hit carts or bags or trees. Luckily no breaks in my career thus far

Have you hit a person yet? What would be your reaction if someone tossed one and it hit you or damaged your equipment?

Not necessarily breaking A club but I watched a guy on my college team hook 3 balls in a row into the lake left of 9 tee at Miss State University Course and proceed to Goldberg Spear his golf bag then pick it up and try to punt it. Broke his collarbone, 3 toes and bent 7 clubs....was easily the most astonishing thing I’ve ever seen on a golf course...and funny as hell.
