Drunk and Disorderly at PGA events

sbboudreau

Recommended Posts

The PGA needs to do something about abusive and disorderly conduct at PGA events. 99% of spectators can act accordingly throughout an event. I just read that if a spectator at The Masters gets boisterous they are promptly removed, this needs to become the norm at all Golf venues in both PGA and LPGA sanctioned events. Though it is almost a non issue at an LPGA event. But to be fair both Tours need to be included in this thread. Watching an LPGA event is much more enjoyable than a PGA event. BABABOOIE and GET IN THE HOLE on every tee shot is quite annoying and a black eye on the PGA that needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY. To bad some people have no etiquette or general respect for other spectators. Stop alcohol consumption at ALL professional Golfing events and the real fans will still come out and possibly more Families would attend without fear for their children. What is the PGA thinking? They are trying to promote the game of golf to youngsters but allowing a few Drunk and Disorderly fans ruin it for all. Fan Rules should be posted at all events, No Alcohol, No Abusive Language, Etiquette and Cordial Behavior Must Be Maintained Or You Will Be Removed! This isn’t a Rock Concert!

What a new and exciting topic of discussion. Yelling has been going on for what, nearly 15 years now? Maybe all the complainers should find a new hobby.

So, since ill-mannered behavior has been going on for 15 years that makes it acceptable??? You must be a 'miliennial', or a jerk!

Who gave you the right to determine what is and isn’t “ill-mannered”? Cheering after the ball is struck impacts nothing and has been going on for ages now. The baby boomer tour officials, who are in charge and create tour policy, have deemed it to be acceptable, and it has become a modern tradition of the sport. I think its “ill-mannered” that you have to resort to calling me names, instead of providing a logical counterargument. Such is often a sign that you are incapable of doing so.

Funny, only the millennials on tour have been vocal in their complaints about the galleries.

Rooting for someone's ball to go in a bunker after struck? I don't have a problem with that. Getting personal with players? That's crossing a line.

The PGA tour is a for profit venture. I got very early to the intramural they call Ryder Cup and they were selling bloody Marys and beer at 7am. By the time the players started making swings on the tee, some fans were completely drunk. But at $9 a drink I’m sure the PGA won’t stop doing it. It will take some mass accident to happen to change their ways. I can see a gallery going after one drunk and hurt people.

If a fan interferes with play by yelling during a stroke or something similar then yes have them removed. If a fan wants to clap for missed putts or yell "get in the bunker" after a shot then they have every right to.

That's because us millennials are soft powder-puff entitled complainers who cry when we don't get our way. The old guys don't complain because they're more likely to be shotgunning brews with the crowd. Saturdays are for the boys, not the millennials.

It is not an issue at any European event, apart from the Ryder Cup which is stacked out by corporate freebie holders who are only there to get drunk on someone else's money. Maybe the Open Championship idea should be carried over to the US. Charge extortionate amounts for low quality lager that proper beer drinkers won't touch. And even more for generic spirits. Et voila very few drunks.

Go read about some of the stuff that happened to Jack when he began to supplant Arnie.

I was curious about that and did some searches with variants of 'Arnie's army yelling at Jack Nicklaus'. I found nothing except a couple summaries recounting history about Jack showing up to 'hostile' crowds, which back in those days probably meant that they didn't clap when Jack made a birdie or maybe even clapped when Jack missed a putt. Not close to today's crowds.

I have many stories of drunken spectators over the years, but the first year of Deutsche Bank at TPC Boston, before there was a FedEx Cup playoff schedule, takes the cake. There was a grown adult man, wearing a head to toe Tiger suit complete with face paint, out of his gourd drunk staggering down the cart path near 14 (which borders both 13 and 15 in close proximity.) Tiger's group was a few holes away but not in his immediate drunken vicinity. He was holding a beer and yelling unintelligible things at no one in particular. I passed him on the cart path as the nearest group was in 14 fairway trying to hit and quietly said to him "Hey, glad you're having a good time, but you may want to stop screaming because there's a few groups trying to play near you." He grumbled and walked off.

About an hour later, I was walking back up 18 from the green to the tee box just as TW's group was on the tee at 18. The crowd was thick but as they walked toward me, the Drunk Tiger Suit guy was among them, even more sloppy drunk now. In his haze he looked up, saw me and came running towards me. He stuck his furry stuffed paw in my chest and growled "You? You're nothing but a piece of traaaaaaaash" in his thick Boston accent and I about died laughing and replied "Thank you. I can die now. I've always wanted to be yelled at by a grown man in a Tiger suit, so life is complete." There have been many idiot spectators, but he'll always be my favorite.

For the ones who yell for the sake of yelling? I don't mind if they're having a good time, but a social filter now and then would help. Anyone who crosses the line and gets personal with the players should be asked to leave, period.

Jack Nicklaus, in the '60s There was nothing outwardly objectionable about Nicklaus or his behavior, but Arnold Palmer's legions of fans were miffed at the new threat to the King's supremacy. They picked on Jack's weight ("Fat Jack"), and the comparatively uninspiring way the new guy from Ohio played the game. Like many players before and after him, Nicklaus had to work his way into the public's hearts.

http://abcnews.go.co...ory?id=39803659

Nicklaus? He was fighting through the kind of road heckling that normally greeted football, baseball and basketball players -- not golfers. Fans called him "Fat Jack" and "Fat Guts" and made distracting noises when he lined up a putt.

"Arnold was the first player to bring people like that off the street," said Phil Rodgers, who finished tied for third that year. "He was like an everyday ironworker, big and strong and puffing on his cigarette, his shirt tail hanging out, and he took a rip at it and attacked every hole. Hogan's game was very plotted out, almost a script. Arnold? He didn't have a script. His script was whatever I am going to do now, and people loved it."

Those people didn't want him to lose to an opponent who came from the right side of the tracks. Nicklaus was hardly a blue blood -- his father, Charlie, ran a few drugstores -- but Palmer's family and fans saw Nicklaus as a country clubber all the same. The Oakmont crowd turned so ugly on Fat Jack that Charlie Nicklaus went after one of the hecklers before a family friend, tempestuous Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes -- who would lose his career to a punch he threw at an opposing player -- actually stepped in and calmed him down. Arnold's sister, Cheech, would later concede that the crowd's treatment of Nicklaus was embarrassing. Arnold's daughter, Peg, remembered "how horrible it felt to have people attack one of my dad's opponents. I recall it not being what I learned golf was supposed to be about. My grandfather was very upset and ashamed."

So because 1% of all golf fans act like jerks, your solution is to tell me and the rest of the 99% who act appropriately that we're not allowed to have a beer with our hot dog? Isn't that like saying since some wives don't have orgasms, nobody can have sex with their wife?

I'm sure glad you're not in charge.

That sounds perfect. Liken it back to speed humps if it makes it simpler for you to understand. I don't drive through car parks at excessive speed, but because some fools do, I am forced to have additional wear and tear on my shock absorbers. The minority has always spoiled things for the majority, why should alcohol be any different? Perhaps those that can't satisfy their wife should not drink also.

A counter argument would imply that a formal argument in favor of has been lodged. I’ve yet to hear that from you or anyone.

So what say you ? Why is it ok to be drunk and disorderly in a public space without arrest when it is against the law 99% of the time?
