I see a lot of people compare the European Tour to the PGA Tour and I think that’s an unfair comparison. The Euro Tour mostly attracts hardcore fans and not casual sports fans. The PGA Tour attracts a much higher degree of casual sports fans whose main goal is to party & have a good time with a professional sport as the backdrop for that activity. If you look at other more niche organizations like the ATP for example you see what’s considered by most to be very appropriate fan behavior at those events in America because the fanbase is that of a hardcore nature whose top priority is to take in the event itself.

But isn’t that the issue ? As I the reason for the comparison , to highlight the problem. ?

That sounds perfect. Liken it back to speed humps if it makes it simpler for you to understand. I don't drive through car parks at excessive speed, but because some fools do, I am forced to have additional wear and tear on my shock absorbers. The minority has always spoiled things for the majority, why should alcohol be any different? Perhaps those that can't satisfy their wife should not drink also.

How dare you inject rational, realistic conversation to this thread! :taunt:

So you can’t go 8 hours without a drink? Bad behavior is acceptable because idiots pay an admission fee. Disrupting other people’s enjoyment is OK? Sounds we have a bunch of Alcoholics and poor sports on WRX who care little for their fellow man. It’s the problem with this world. To many people feel they are entitled to do as they please. Your parents should have raised you better and more likely than not spanked you when you needed it instead of having a talk with you. Grow up you don’t live in a bubble.

Go read about some of the stuff that happened to Jack when he began to supplant Arnie.

I was curious about that and did some searches with variants of 'Arnie's army yelling at Jack Nicklaus'. I found nothing except a couple summaries recounting history about Jack showing up to 'hostile' crowds, which back in those days probably meant that they didn't clap when Jack made a birdie or maybe even clapped when Jack missed a putt. Not close to today's crowds.

http://www.golf.com/...rsial-golfers#2

Jack Nicklaus, in the '60s There was nothing outwardly objectionable about Nicklaus or his behavior, but Arnold Palmer's legions of fans were miffed at the new threat to the King's supremacy. They picked on Jack's weight ("Fat Jack"), and the comparatively uninspiring way the new guy from Ohio played the game. Like many players before and after him, Nicklaus had to work his way into the public's hearts.

http://abcnews.go.co...ory?id=39803659

Nicklaus? He was fighting through the kind of road heckling that normally greeted football, baseball and basketball players -- not golfers. Fans called him "Fat Jack" and "Fat Guts" and made distracting noises when he lined up a putt.

"Arnold was the first player to bring people like that off the street," said Phil Rodgers, who finished tied for third that year. "He was like an everyday ironworker, big and strong and puffing on his cigarette, his shirt tail hanging out, and he took a rip at it and attacked every hole. Hogan's game was very plotted out, almost a script. Arnold? He didn't have a script. His script was whatever I am going to do now, and people loved it."

Those people didn't want him to lose to an opponent who came from the right side of the tracks. Nicklaus was hardly a blue blood -- his father, Charlie, ran a few drugstores -- but Palmer's family and fans saw Nicklaus as a country clubber all the same. The Oakmont crowd turned so ugly on Fat Jack that Charlie Nicklaus went after one of the hecklers before a family friend, tempestuous Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes -- who would lose his career to a punch he threw at an opposing player -- actually stepped in and calmed him down. Arnold's sister, Cheech, would later concede that the crowd's treatment of Nicklaus was embarrassing. Arnold's daughter, Peg, remembered "how horrible it felt to have people attack one of my dad's opponents. I recall it not being what I learned golf was supposed to be about. My grandfather was very upset and ashamed."

Thanks grm. Finding these accounts are few and far between. Although, Jack heckling was only for a short period during that time while fans warmed to Him. Interesting comment though about Arnie drawing in fans 'from the wrong side of the tracks'.

Still, the fact that it has happened before doesn't make it acceptable.

Agree with this. It’s your weekend? You deserve to be wasted? Do it at home. Show a little respect to the other patrons. Life is kick a__ enough without being wasted

Getting drunk on a day off, and being a complete douchenozzle attention whoring loudmouth do not necessarily go hand in hand.

Eject the idiots who do not have the ability to keep to themselves, and let the vast majority of responsible partiers carry on.

You teetotalers can also keep that to yourselves. I do not want to hear your drivel anywhere publicly any more than that of "get in the hole" and bababooey guy. If you think the world would be a better place if you could dictate your morality on anybody else, you are probably more of a moron, in general, than most of the bababooey and "get in the hole" idiots.

I don’t advertise my sobriety and get in your face at sporting events. I don’t make it my mission to say things so loud so I can go home and watch the recorded telecast and tell my buddies “that’s ME!!!” It’s blatently obvious the drunks are entitled otherwise my thoughts wouldn’t be criticized. Tell a person who drinks to not drink as much and the defensiveness is palpable. It’s quite comical.

It's not just golf.

I used to have NY Ranger season tickets and the beer guzzling was incessant.

And the result was not just people getting loud. It was fistfights galore and idiots puking in the aisles.

I've seen it at baseball games, too.

If you can't make it through a sporting event without an alcoholic beverage....STAY HOME!

Or maybe go to an AA meeting.

That will never happen. Sports are awesome. But I’m going to take it up a notch because sobriety is stoopid I’ve worked hard all day/week and I deserve this. My obnoxiously loud profanity is upsetting to you and your children? I bought my ticket I can do what I want.

Agreed. Great examples can be found at any bar in the world once they call last drinks. Alcohol shouldn't just be banned at sporting events, it should be just banned in general. Some people just don't know when enough is enough.

Just think, nobody would ever die to a drunk driver again. There would be no wives being beaten in drunken fits of rage. No drunken fights at the kebab shop when the bars close. No kids getting their hands on alcohol. No need to spend massive amounts of taxpayers money to fund breath testing operations.

How it was made legal in the first place has got to make a rational mind boggle.

I’ve been sober 26 years. I’m pro marijuana (doesn’t mean I would give up sobriety to do it) and anti alcohol

Case in point. Try to tell a drunk man to give you his keys to the car and then tell a stoned man the same thing. You will never ever get a drunks keys without a fight

The big lie is the “growing of the game” thing. Those yellers are there because the tour wants the money, not because they encourage better golf or more golf

Maybe it IS the they same guy that honks as in your back swing as he drives past the course. That guy is probably just an Word not allowedhole. Maybe its the same guy.

Edit- Sorry, i thought i was in a bababooey thread, this is a drunk thread. Im not even drunk. As you were.

Pretty easy to do when there's like 4 or 5 of these threads active right now. I did the same thing mentioning Rory in the JT thread.

I think someone should start another 'roll back the ball' thread.

I agree, I use to smoke some weed also but I found I couldn't do it without overdoing it so now I choose to leave it alone. I do know however that the world would have less violence, destruction and anger if the authorities in control all those years ago had chosen to prohibit alcohol instead of weed.

I applaud you for being one of the very few that was smart enough to see you had reasons to give up drinking.

I thought they did choose to prohibit alcohol all those years ago. Unless that Capone documentary was full of it.

That's been tried already during the prohibition and was a disaster. People drank anyway and it led to massive criminal enterprises and gangsters like Al Capone and Bugs Moran.

Unfortunately we can't legislate away stupidity, which is a much bigger problem IMO. Always intrigues me how an idiot will risk everybody's life driving aggressively, tailgating etc. all to shave a couple minutes off a commute.

I never said alcohol is a bad thing, just like guns aren’t bad. It’s the people who don’t have the control or morality to handle them properly that are the problem.

I’ll counter this by stating and asking this entire board of the dumbest and stupidest things that they have ever done. I’ll bet nearly all had alcohol as a factor.

I haven’t had a drink in almost five years, I got smart. I don’t even miss it and I never have to worry about being pulled over or how I will get home and no alcohol means what I used to drink now pays for my golf. Alcohol creates so many problems for so many people and being insistent about being able to ”get hammered” because you work all week creates a whole separate set of problems. I don’t have hangovers anymore, one less reason for the wife to be angry at me about Haha. Being an alcoholic is not a good thing and being able to admit it is the first step to becoming a much better person. I know I’m an alcoholic, always have been always will be, I just don’t drink anymore.
