Driver Fitting -100mph and Need More Spin

Does this scenario make sense?

 

Key Points:

100-105mph swing speed maybe a bit higher at times.

Playing 9.5* Cally Razr Fit Extreme 440 9.5 with stiff Black Tie 7M3 (I was not fit for).

Drives 260-280 on decent hits, but I experience a lot of volatility.

Two most common misses we dive to left and block.

 

Had M3 fitting Saturday. Using Wilson Distance Limited range balls, with normalized setting on TrackMan on. With my driver very very low spin numbers, as low as 1100rpm. Does that sound possible? Shaft has not felt too stiff, but I also cannot feel it kick really. I’m questioning whether or not I’ve had a low spin problem but didn’t realize it. But that spin number sounds too low.

 

We went through a bunch of combinations to get spin up. Settled on 12* M3 with weight in back and Tensei Red Stiff shaft. It felt pretty good and shot pattern improved quite a bit.

 

I was getting 245 carry 260 total, 14* launch and 2300 spin.

 

I previously played a driver with a Speeder 652 which kicked more and I had better results.

 

I guess my questions are does this make sense? Could the ball normalization be off? What would I see with decent speed and spin that’s too low?

 

I have Ping and Callaway fittings upcoming and I’ll see how I fit into those drivers.

I went to Kingdom to get fit in Jan this year. My ss is 106 to 109.. I was playing a M2 10.5 head and found out my spin was 1300!!!!!! I would try and tee ball up WAY high hit it with a POA of +5 coming from inside. THe fitter put me in a 12 head and my spin went to 2000.. I gained 19 yards of carry.... My dispersion is just great now as well..... I would say if you are 14 launch and 2300 spin is perfect!!!!!

By any chance was this was a "fitting" at a retail store? Were you actually fit for playing length as part of the fitting or did you just hit the stock playing length?

 

Yes it is possible if impact is high on the face. Did you check your impact position with foot powder spray or impact tape? Were you able to adjust the tee height to your normal (on course) tee height?

 

But there are other ways spin readings could be off. Was this indoors? If so, did the balls have the metallic stickers on them and were they positioned properly when on the tee?

It was a demo day appointment outside on the range at my club. Al were standard length.

 

Ian definitely considering playing 44.5 or so to maximize center contact which I don’t get enough of. I’d say my contact miss with current driver is most often low on the face. Perhaps I’ve adapted to that to increase spin without realizing?

 

The 1100 could have been influenced by not being as in the groove or warmed up.. but when I was fully warmed up I hit the Tensei Red 12* 14/2300. That would at least lead credence to the idea that even if 1100 was an anomaly it’s too low with current.

 

The other shaft I had decent results with was a stiff 6.0 Evenflow Blue, though it felt a little loose and the Tensei Red more stable.

You can play about with your numbers if you know your launch conditions, remember it needs ball speed so its swing speed x smash factor = ball speed (Ex. 110 x 1.48 = 162.8).

 

You can also put in all your numbers and if your smash factor is low (Ex. you don't hit the centre of the club often) you can see just how much difference a centre strike will make with your swing speed.

 

Worth playing with to see if your getting good numbers but its really just a Toy - you need to get on a LM to really know what's what.

As mentioned by Stuart, but deserves to be asked again... do you know the contact points on the driver face? Spin can vary upwards of 3000 rpm, from low spin towards upper section of face to high spin towards bottom of the face.

Yep, i know a few guys that hit down on the driver quite a bit and struggle with high spin numbers so there's many factors to getting the perfect numbers which vary from swing to swing.

Also, I was hitting 2 degrees up on my decent to better swings.

 

I know that with my level of ability I won’t be able to achieve an absolute optimal solution, but I’m looking for allows me to play most consistently.

Nothing wrong with not hitting up but its definitely the optimal for launch conditions but you need to be consistent one way or the other to dial in you launch angle and get the proper loft on your driver imo.

14/2300 is pretty good numbers for your swing speed I would say..if you dropped spin to around 2000 you could gain a few yards of roll but nothing drastic...
