Hogan apex II Irons- value??

Guys, have someone offering to sell me these, 2-ew, never hit, with invoice of purchase...What's a good price??

A decent used set on the auction is between $110-$150. A new set, never hit with invoice is probably at least twice of that, maybe more depending on the potential buyer. Bonus will be the original packing box along with the invoice.

 

Check if all serial numbers on the ferrule matched. Original OEM grips ? Apex 4 shaft ? Should be if it comes with the 2 iron. Worth a little more if everything is original from the factory.

 

If I get these, it'll never see a golf ball, the value should climb in the future.

The ferrule on the club pictured is not original. If it is indeed all black. Is the rest of the set the same? Why would someone change them on a never been struck set? And the paint fill in the cameo is rough for a minty, never been hit club. Caveat emptor. Not that they aren't wonderful clubs, and a worthy acquisition. A couple of tells that all may not be as described. And perhaps not worth paying "mint state" prices.

 

One other thing to check, the scoring lines should have black paint fill in them.

I had a set of white cameos and agree with the ferrule warning (IF they were white cameo's which they're not? Only see the 2 iron) . However, I also had a black cameo 1-iron and I'm almost positive it was an all black ferrule. If I'm correct, and please understand I'm not saying I'm 100 percent correct as it was decades ago, those all black ferrules are most probably original IMO. Others would know for certain but cameo's were produced from 79 to 82? The latter versions being black cameo.

Personally, Even with the original packing box and DOB certificate and invoice with everything original, the top dollar I would consider would be close to $400 ( original retail must be close to $600 back in the days ).

According to Fellaheen51, this could be a re-chromed. Even the re-chrome cost is not cheap, it'll not add a bunch of value to this set. Nice as it is, I'd not pay over $250 for this.

I'm no expert in this but the OEM should have stamping on the ferrule, minimum should match from 3-E sometime the 2 iron will also have the matching ferule stamping if ordered from the factory at the same time. I have yet to see any good after market ferule stamping.

Like fellaheen said, the black paint fill in the scoring lines would be telling. Rechromed Hogan's I've seen on eBay don't have black scoring lines.

NOS Hogans (if that's what they are, and there is good advice above) have some collectibility value I would guess - but not much of a premium in terms of playability. By which I mean, I picked up a set of those irons for fifty quid in very good, very playable condition and that's not an unheard of bargain. If you want players (and those are great irons), you could get great players for next to nothing. It's not like, as with modern irons, "new" means a minty milled face and fresh, sharp grooves. With that vintage iron, new means low volume V grooves filled with paint and you won't notice as they wear!
