Different size grips for woods vs. irons

Hi all! Does anyone have experience with or has heard of using different size grips for woods vs irons? My miss is a hook, but only with my woods, so I'm considering going with midsize grips on Driver/Wood/Hybrid and then standard on the irons. It makes sense in my head, but what do I know?

 

If the general recommendation is to NOT do anything like that (i.e. keep the grips the same through the set) let me know so I don't do something stupid!

I am standard size on my irons, but my hands get quick with my 3 wood so I have a mid size on it. You need to do whatever works

Go with what works. I was in line for the Trackman one day at the golf shop, and saw a the final tweaks on a full bag fitting. The golfer was a thirty-somethings in good shape physically. The fitter put him into a moderately heavy stiff shaft for his driver and 3W. But for his irons, he recommended an average weight R-flex shaft. The reason: The golfer was a lot more aggressive with his woods swing than his irons swing.

 

Thicker grips on your woods might quiet down your hands. Also, you might take a caliper to the top 6 " of your grips. If the iron shafts had a slightly thicker butt than the woods, this might contribute to your left misses with long clubs (overall thinner grips, more hand roll.)

 

Regrip the driver for thicker and see what happens.

I go with an extra wrap on the woods for the same reason. Subtle change. I could go a full size bigger but it leads to a little grip uncertainty which introduces more variables in my game so I don’t want to do that.

Have you actually tried a bigger grip? Do you know whether it really will help you with the hook miss or not?

 

The general concept of a bigger grip helping to eliminate a hook is a bit of a misconception. It can happen but it's far from being any type of universal 'truth' in fitting for grip size so certainly not something you should assume will help. The larger size does not inherently restrict the hands or wrists in any way. What happens with a grip size change is all about what it does the the level of comfort you feel with the different size and what it might do to your grip pressure during the swing.

Try a firmer flex in the woods.

I normally play with mid-sized grips, but have had different size grips on different clubs at different times, and haven't seen any difference in my ball flight whatsoever.

Standard GP tour wraps on everything except my driver and 3 metal. Those get the win drytac grey midsize and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Maybe it’s real or mental but the mid size grips seem to reduce happy hands flipping the face shut which allows for straight balls or slight draws on good swings and misses are baby cuts. Very rare to lose a tee ball or second shot duck hook left...actually since the change I don’t think it’s happened even once in over 40 rounds.
