I think the mind game that Rory played with Reed actually worked. 71 wasn’t a great score today from Reed but it was enough to get the job done. I would guess it was higher than the field average on Sunday. Reed certainly didn’t go out there and run and hide from everyone. What Rory needs to learn is once you mind f someone, you still have to go out there and post a number. You can’t fold like a lawn chair and expect Reed to comeback to you.

i thought -1 was a pretty good score when you're trying to protect a 3 shot lead for a major. but to each their own

Only on WRX would a final round Master’s score of one under Par, 71, be called meh, lmao

Actually you are correct regarding the 4th round average, as for the 53 Guys that planted the peg today, the average score was 70.4905.

Bear in mind that most of those guys weren’t Playing for anything and had little if any pressure on them at all. For many, it was a shats & giggles round.

Ask Greg Norman how he’d feel about a fourth round 71, instead of a 72 & 78.

If he could’ve had a final round 71 in 1987 & 1996, he’d have 2 green jackets and instead of being labeled as a choke, he’d be in the discussion as one of the top 3-4 Players ever.

Nah, Rory’s “head game” didn’t do shat to Patrick, lol.

He’s gotta green jacket, And Rory, who started the day in 2nd, finished T5, had a 74, 3.5 shots higher than the field, and he’s flying back across the pond lickin his wounds and wonderin WTF happened??

At Augusta at least, he’s fast becoming this generation’s Norman.

Oh yea, head up, counting their RC single’s match, it’s Patrick 2, Rory 0

Haha, Rorr’s better forget about the head games and just Play some golf.

As always, just my .03 worth?

Stay well,

Yup Rory stunk it up, but Reed has got a long way to go before he's even close to sniffin' McIlroys accomplishments.

First, Rory was in a very foul mood after the Masters. Don't blame him. He and Reed are very much alike ego-wise and big-mouth-wise, so they don't like recognizing that in each other. Also, Europe hates Reed for his shushing them at the Ryder Cup. They still talk hatefully about it. Read the British golf sports headlines and stories tomorrow, I'm sure you'll read all about Reed's arrogance.

I think Reed rocks. If he wins another major or two, everyone will love him. It is a tradition of the game.

It's not just Europe though, is it? Hate is a strong word, but it was a muted applause on the 18th for Reed.

Paul Azinger summed it up on the BBC. "The crowd would have loved to have seen Rory win...then the cheers were for Spieth...then the cheers were for Fowler. Reed was maybe fourth choice".

He may never be that popular, but your final point is true. He will gain respect. I don't think Reed wants to be popular, but he wants to be respected, and that's what he'll get from the fans and fellow players after this. "Reed is on the leaderboard, uh oh that guy is Masters champion".

The "arrogance" of Reed can be boiled down to something along the lines of being asked if he thought he was really, really good, like among the best in the world, and Reed answering with something along the lines of "yes, I think I'm among the best in the world"...

Wow! Shameful in a man who is willing to tee it up and put his reputation on the line in front of millions. He faced the pressure of a Ryder Cup Singles match against Rory, when Rory was on fire, and dancing around the greens with his hand to his ear, and drained putt after putt.

He faced the pressure of the Masters, on Sunday, when a 4 stroke lead had become zero, and instead of wilting under that pressure like Spieth a couple of years ago, or Norman (twice), or Kite, or Ed Sneed, or Curtis Strange, or Seve himself in '86 (el chunko into the pond on 15), or Rory in '11, or Scott Hoch, or Kenny Perry, he kept it together for the win.

If there are any hotter crucibles of pressure than Ryder Cup Sunday, and Masters Sunday having slept on a lead, I'd like to hear your stories. He's stepped into both, against the best in the world, and did not stumble, would not melt.

That ain't no easy task, folks. And no amount of internet hate can take that away from him. Whatever it is that certain golfers have, and others only wish they had, he's got it. And a nice Green Jacket in his closet.

FORE RIGHT!!!!

I'm not trying to be a dick here, but if you've never played competitive golf, tee'd it up for 3/4 days to win something, or even been in the hunt in your flight of the local club championship, you have no idea of the emotions and mental stress of competition. Unless you've been so nervous you could barely take the club back, you have ZERO idea what tournament golfers go through, regardless of how many events they've won......

You've never heard of Rory? Astonishing to me, since Reed was on the who beat him head-to-head in the last Ryder Cup. Everyone who follows golf knows very well who Patrick Reed is and his terrific, dogged record.

IMO if you "go through" all that stress and fail at controlling it, you're not ready to win. The winners expect all that, deal with it, work over it, and win. We hold them to a higher standard because that is how they hold themselves and what they prepare for.

There are a few that successfully showed up anywhere, anytime against anyone and they prevailed, however more than not developed an “Achilles Heel,” at least at certain venues or in certain events. In and at others, a smal chink in the armor, an ever so slight doubt in the mind, and a millisecond slight tightening of a single muscle and all of the practice, preparing and planning is for not.

A lot of great Players and Champions that have “been there done that,” both successfully and not so well, can attest to that...

Weiskopf, Norman, Sam(US Open), Tiger, post-hydrant in Majors and for now, Rory, at Augusta.

I spoke to Sam about it and it was decades after, according to his Bro, before his ego and psyche would allow him to even have this conversation. It was an enlightening conversation and reinforced my beliefs and basically what both EK and you stated, that some can do it, some can’t and then the degrees of achievement separate those who can do it anytime, anytime against anyone from those who cannot, or did not.

Nice posts EK & Tim(I’m outa likes for the day though when it reboots, I owe ya one, lol?)??

Have a great week?

RP

I was never a big fan of Patrick Reed, but I didn't dislike him either. I don't care about his background, I just care that he played his heart out, never gave up, & won the Masters, probably against all odds. So, congrats to him & his family. I would've loved seeing Rickie win, & I think his major will definitely happen fairly soon. Also, I think the little "jacket" ceremony in the Master's clubhouse is creepy, but that could just be because Jim Nantz is there. :taunt:

I let a few get away being too jacked up at crunch time, I'll admit it. Under pressure, it's easy to get out of the normal routine. The nerves on those 4' putts, and short iron shots are what made the Watson's, Trevino's, Faldo's, etc, such great finishers. BUT, all the greats suffered some losses along the way. Call it nerves, choking, etc, all the mental aspects of crunch time. The Thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat covers ALL sports.....
