Who has had the better career so far? Reed or Fowler?

It's a good question, really. Shows whether folks value wins or high finishes/money earnings. CH3 is 21st on the all time money list. There are plenty of guys below him that most would say had a better career than Charles.

Until today, I would say Fowler. Heck, I think Rahm is about to surpass Rickie. Rahm will probably win a Major or The Players this year, and he has already set a way faster pace than Rickie. Rickie looked good this week, and I think he finally cracked the code to get it done soon. He got so many unlucky breaks Friday. I watched at least 5 putts lip out that should have went in. He really didn’t have a bad round Friday, he just got some unlucky breaks and had 32 putts. I think The Players and The Open are his for the taking this year. DJ, Justin, and Kuchar are trending in the wrong direction. Spieth and Fowler will be tough to beat this year. Will likely be around the top of the leader board every week this season along with Stenson, Bubba, Rory, and Rahm.

I like Rickie way more as a person and player but clearly the better on course career is Reed by a good margin.

Major, more wins and in less time.

Reed is also a Ryder Cup legend already by age 25 (2014 & 2016 performances). Rickie does have some good wins on the resume though. Both of them do really. Both have "Big 5" wins (majors/PLAYERS) and both have FedEx Cup wins. Reed has a WGC win. Fowler won Quail Hollow against Rory in a playoff.

Rickie. Much greater career on course earnings and higher sponsorship value. Provides much more value to spectators and advertisers.

And what value would that be? Rickie is a boy among men but he does have cute go go boots if you're into that sort of thing. With all his publicity he must have won what, at least twenty tournaments?

That value would be money, the whole point of jobs and working.

While this may be true in most professions, I don't think it counts for everything to these guys. If we could ask Rickie what he'd rather have right now, that million dollar paycheck or that green jacket, I have a feeling I know what he's picking. It's great that these guys have a chance to make lots of money but I get the impression it's the winning that counts.... At this rate, Rickie looks like the worlds best wingman. I like him, but he's always taking home sloppy seconds.... On the leaderboard that is. Personal life he is winning at a record pace.

I feel he took a big step forward today. He shot -6 from the 8th tee box to the clubhouse. Very impressive stuff. Birdied the last hole to put real pressure on Reed at the end. Just like with Mickelson and Garcia, I am pretty confident Fowler will get a major at some point. Hopefully it's pretty soon so the media will leave him alone.

Dont get me wrong, I think his time will come, too... but right now the Major trumps all IMO. And Reed battled for this one, dude is proving to be tough out there when he wants it. No one can say Rickie's career sucks or is a failure but having that major under your belt is huge.

Obviously 1 major > 0 majors but some stats Fowler has been better at from their careers, some much more so

Wins worldwide - 8 vs 6

Second places - 15 vs 7

Third places - 9 vs 3

Top 10s - 75 vs 42

Top 5s in majors - 8 vs 2

Fowler has actually been a top 5 player, was in the top 5 in the World Rankings in 2015

Career earnings - $32m vs $22m

Ricky has 4 PGA wins and 2 Euro Tour Wins = 6 (You must be counting the Hero, an exhibition with a field of 18)

Pat has 6 PGA wins and 1 Euro Tour win = 7

You do make a point. Fowler gets himself in position a lot more often, but seldom closes it out. When Reed is in position, he is more than twice as likely to close the deal..

That's just what it said on the OWGR website, I think it counts Hero World Challenge and the Korea Open. Reed doesn't have 7 wins though, he has 6. He has never won a regular European Tour event, the Masters is double counted PGA Tour and European Tour.

If you're defining careers based solely on wins then it's Reed but a career is a lot more than that. As pointed out earlier the total value of Rickie's career is much higher than Reed's. Money comes in the form of marketing and Reed can win 3 more majors and still wont be as marketable as Rickie. So if I had to pick I'd take Rickie's career any day over Reed.

Great post, but this is all you had to say. And Rickie is only two years older than Patrick. I’m sure the difference in money gets even bigger when you factor in sponsorships. With all that extra cash, I’ll buy a green jacket, gold jacket, plaid jacket, members only jacket, book jacket, and still have plenty of cash leftover.

Exactly.

Rickie has performed much better over the years

Losing to Reed by 1 shot in the Masters doesn't erase all that

Winning trumps everything, so Reed has had the better career thus far.

I'd rather have Fowler's life though. He's had a larger impact on the game. More fans. A top notch sponsorship. He's generally more liked by everyone. And based on his world rankings you could argue he's a better overall golfer but he struggles to win.

Reed has that killer instinct though, and he's able to extract every ounce of talent he has to get the win.

Winning a major kind of answers the question. But even without it, Rickie, despite him being popular and well liked, has underachieved.

This thread is proof positive that there is way more to a golfer's career than the number of major championship wins.

With guys like Tiger and Nicklaus it's always "18>14", very cut and dry

But I am noticing when it comes to Rickie, all kinds of other criteria are allowed into the discussion: prize money earned, 2nd-tier wins, endorsement deals, impact on kids, attractiveness of girlfriends, etc.

underachieved? do you really think so? i actually think hes done pretty much what was expected, i reckon hes done well to prove hes not just a show pony, he's contended in majors, he's won a players, and hes won some other tournaments.

If he gets a major and maybe 4 or 5 more tournaments in his career hes done really well.

Look at Couples...very similar to Rickie with his popularity yet he only won one major yet no one is saying he had a bad career compared to other players who maybe won more but likely made less money overall.

Couples is the President and CEO of Underachieving tour players. That said, who gets to decide what his goals should have been? He's made more money than he can spend playing golf and almost everyone likes him. That seems pretty successful to me :)
