Greetings ...

No category covering a calendar year grand slam currently exists, either for the PGA Tour or for any of the four majors (Masters, US Open, Open Championship, PGA Championship). Personally speaking, I would like to see the PGA Tour award at least a 25-year exemption for achieving a calendar year slam (all four majors won within the same calendar year) and a 10-year exemption for achieving a career slam (one set of four majors won in different years).

Are we saying winning the grand slam - career, or grand slam - year?

I know Masters has lifetime exemption and apparently so does the PGA (wikipedia says all former champions), the Open has until age 60.

US Open is 10 years, that's why Tiger will be out next year, unless he checks another exemption in the next 14 months (although they can give a special exemption, and they probably would for Tiger).

If you do the grand slam, you basically have lifetime exemption anyway (except the US open, but my thoughts would be that they would hook you up for a while).

Actually i dont think they should, the masters being a lifetime exemption is daft, whats the point in Larry Mize still playing? sure nice for him but surely a better player could take that place?

10 years for all is more than enough

Larry Mize isn't taking someone's "place" at the Masters.

But that's the point, if they didn't have all these old champions playing forever they could increase it to say the top 75 instead of the top 50

The field isn’t small because they ran out of room, it’s small because it’s hard to meet the criteria. Drop Mize and replace him with 25 players?

Would any player who wins all four, need an exemption?

I thought you get 5 year exemption after winning US Open, PGA, British?

US Open 10 years

Masters lifetime

British 60 years old

PGA lifetime

They could already increase the field if they wanted. Which would entirely go against the concept of...The Masters.

Greetings ....

Just so we have some clearer understanding, here's what a player currently gets for winning any one of the four Grand Slam Majors (Masters, US Open, British Open Championship, PGA Championship)

Winners of any one major -- A five year exemption to each of the other three majors plus the Players Championship. If the particular winner is a PGA Tour Member, or is a non-member who subsequently elects to join the Tour, then they can be exempt for any regular open or invitational PGA Tour event (excluding Tournament of Champions, WGCs or Fed Ex Playoffs, which all have different criteria) for up to five years following the particular major championship victory.

Winners of the Masters or PGA Championship -- a life exemption to the particular event.

Winners of the British Open Championship -- if under age 50, they are exempt for the event up to the day the player turns 60 yrs old, if said day occurs prior to the current year's event. Any Open Championship winner 50 yrs or older receives only a 10-yr exemption to the event.

Winners of the US Open -- a 10-yr exemption to the event.

This always reminds me of the Calvin & Hobbs where Calvin asks his dad how they determine weight limits on bridges. "Well son, they keep driving bigger and bigger trucks over it until it breaks and then they rebuild it."

How will we know how old a champion may be and still win a major unless we let them all play? Watson damn near won the open at 59.

Governing bodies have been known to give special exemptions, like the US Open;

http://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/media/online-media-center/usga-records/u-s--open--special-exemptions.html

Therefore, should Tiger run out of his exemption status for the event, the USGA will have a way to get him in, basically a lifetime exemption. Now if the could only find a way to exempt him to the weekend we would be in business.

This is NOT true. Mize playing does not preclude anybody from playing. Player qualifications are not limited by the total field.

There are 19 ways to qualify for the Masters and each qualification stands alone.

They could do it today if they wanted to. The tournament could easily handle 25 more golfers.

The Masters is special BECAUSE it’s a smaller field.

The Opens are special because.....well... they are open to all.

You see what makes different is what makes then special.

I love the fact the Masters is a smaller more exclusive field, that allows all past champions to compete, or after they get “the letter” a nice afternoon in the par 3 contest. I don’t want The Masters to feel like the Players Championship.

Congrats. Your now in the running for dumbest post of the yea. You should be honored.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Tiger's last year in 2018 for the U.S. Open unless his play improves. Would he go to qualifying next year?
