I can't believe I'm doing this but I really need to plug River's Edge. 

 

The new Super is a wizard. The greens have been completely transformed. They are smooth, fast and for the first time in a long while, healthy. The course is absolutely pristine condition. I've been playing out there for 10 years and it's never been this good. 

 

They put the pins in different locations, it's like a completely new course. They built a new tee on #2 making it a reachable par 5 if you can find the fairway. They added two ponds on #4 to help with drainage and rebuilt the fairway short of the green. 

 

It is hands down the best value play in the Calgary area. I am expecting a modest increase in green fees, and for a change it's actually well deserved. 

 

With ownership investing in the course again, I'm excited to see what they can improve for next year. I'd like to see them improve the drainage on #2 and #3 to improve the condition of the fairway and do some decompaction work on 13-15 fairways. They are pretty firm ever since the floods, which makes total sense seeing as there were a couple feet of silt and clay deposited.

How far back is the tee on 2? That was a driver and a sand wedge from the back tee before

It's pretty much beside #1 green.

Sylvan held it's annual Cash Scramble today, watched a few teams come in on #18 from across the fence.  Twenty - 4 man teams 80 guys @ $800.00/Team = $16,000.00 

 

There was only 4 prizes up for grabs, #1 got $3,600.00. The 2nd, 3rd, & 4th places were all tied & they split their winnings.

 

They had 4 KP @ $300.00 hole, one guy won 2 KP's - $600.00 not bad.

 

I believe the winning team was from Sylvan they shot a 56 or -16 under. A few teams didn't do so well at 65 or -7 under.

 

It was a BTY warm day, the bevy cart girl was smiling all day, recognize any of the team captains.

Do they play in 8 somes for this? 2 foursomes playing together. I know guys cheat when the prizes are balls or gift cards… can’t imagine how his goes ..

It was a 2 foursome format. I imagine each team had 4 judges keeping score & watching the other team like hawks.

 

Was told the winning team didn't even buy a round ... cheap.

 

EDIT: The golf course included a full meal & the guys had to eat out side following the new Covid rules.

Got out to Wolf Creek for the first time, pretty surprised it’s in the score golf top 100. It was okay

I really like the Wolf Creek "Old Course", find it challenging & was fortunate to win a 2 day tourney there back in 2010, got to keep the tin cup for 1 year.

Oh nice, I played the links and it’s rated higher then the old course. It’s not bad but I just found it shocking it was rated so high. Range isn’t great, carts are old and every cart path is half gravel and uneven pavement. The course is also average maybe I’m a harsh critic but usually if u play a better course you expect a bit more.

Played the new 18 at serenity today. Meh. Needs some time obviously. Prefer the original one. Greens were nice though 

 

have a tourney At Strathmore and one At heritage point on the 17th. Prob be it after that. 
 

think I am at 45 rounds. +0.3 hcp

Our season is coming to a close here soon, I got 68 rounds in & hope to get a few more.

My guess he thinks it a humble brag, or not so humble as it were.  Have to admit I didn't even think about it till he mentioned it.  Tough to show these threads are also something of a conversation, and I'm sure going back would find several people giving a point in time update on their game/index etc.  

 

Someone who hasn't been around could see it as not just a conversation piece.

Not intended to be a humble brag but If you want to take it that way sure. 
 

proud to keep my cap at or below scratch for the season with 2 young kids at home and shift work job. Play lots of different courses so even better as it is a travelling hcp. 
 

be curious to see others. Improvement and consistency is the name of the game!

I actually hit a decent drive but it got hung up in the rough on the left. Pin was back left. Ball was a bit above my feet, total hook lie.

 

Plan was to hit it at the flag and let it bleed back to the middle of the green. Couldn't tell or didn't notice that it was sitting up in the rough and caught it high on the face. Ended up in the junk short and left of the green. Found it and was able to hack it out into the front bunker. Thought I hit a decent bunker shot but didn't get it far enough so it rolled back to the fringe. 

 

Badly missed my bogey putt leaving a 4 foot slider for double that didn't go. 

 

That fairway gives me fits because I can't hit a draw off the tee with any confidence. It's pretty tight to hit a fade into the fairway with the trees on the right.

I got 22 rounds in, could’ve been more but I basically worked all of the spring so I missed out on 2 months also at way higher than a 0.4 handicap haha.

But paid for VIP in actual savings.

What a season! I am happy that most of you saw improvements in your games and got to sample a lot of courses. I had an off year filled with golf elbows and minor age related pains. Cap got as low as 3.1 but now is 5.3. It was good. I have a few more rounds this week. Then I think I will pack it in and start the offseason training. Till I get the bug and pray that TPC Fox is open. New irons sitting at Ping and I am stocked to get em. 

Time to start thinking about where to play next year. May stay at Canals as its so hard to beat value and conditions. I do not think I will go back and get a VIP card after a few years. The price structure has changed so much that the amount I play puts me in seasonal membership categories. I got over 120 rounds in. After about 45 there are diminishing returns and things tank. I hope you all are getting a few more in this year!

I may look at a membership this year as well. I played the Track a few times this year and really enjoyed the course and the changes they have made there. Membership is very affordable and it about 15 mins from my house. 

 

I love Delacour, conditions there are so good! Greens are perfect!!

I also looked at the track. I will play there again this year I hope. They may stay open one more week. 

15 min and an affordable cost is music to my ears. The fuel savings alone are worth it. I played there at the start of the year and the greens were really good already. I hope they are making this course even better. Its a fun track. 

Delacour is consistent, the staff are great, and its an awesome course. 

Prior to the Pandemic, It was looking like the golf market was coming down to Earth. Yet, every place oversold memberships. Its worth going to courses a little further though. You can find times that work for you. I would be livid if I paid my dues and had to be on ballot systems.

Many courses still open after this weekend? I am supposed to play a 27 hole event at heritage pointe on the 17th. Prob be it for me after that unfortunately

I doubt it. I played Rivers Edge on Saturday, teed off at noon. Greens were still frozen about an inch below the surface. Made it hard to fix ball marks and put tees in the ground. 

 

Can't see how that doesn't hurt the grass.

My home course, Sylvan G&CC is done today, there are a few guys out right now it's <5C with a stiff NW wind & snowing at 3:30 pm, not the way anyone wanted to finish the season.  See ....

 

EDIT:  Bought my Escena Club 2022 golf membership, looking forward to spending 3.5 months in Palm Springs this winter .... California dreaming.

Dang David that’s too bad. I hate to even think about it. Pretty lucky here still. My brother and I are in Branson, Mo. to fish and play golf for a week and today is supposed to be around 80. Heading over to play Ozark’s National this afternoon. 
 

Kathy and I were here three weeks ago and played Tiger’s new Payne’s Valley course. Pretty special place but stupid expensive unless you get a twilight deal which we did and even then it’s $180. 
 

$150 today for twilight at the National. 
 

I feel for all you guys up north but our turn is coming soon enough.
