Calgary ranges will be busy come tomorrow. Deep freeze is over finally

Ranges were super busy. If all goes to plan, we are 5 weeks out. 
All the gear is ready to go! Fox might even open next week with the melt that’s going on. It’s not a lot of snow so hopefully we get some good rains in July

What’s the best public access course to play in the Calgary area? I will have played Wolf Creek and Innisfail then going to Kananaskis.

Great fun can be had at Mickelson National GC, The Canal at Delacour GC or at Scirocco GC.

Mickelson National is a comically better than those other two. We were lucky to get that one, just outside the city, however they do keep threatening to take it private.

The only change I would make is to drop Silvertip and try and add the other Kananaskis course. Stewart Creek is the only experience right in Canmore that you need. If you can't, I'd play the Canmore Golf and Curling club, it's short but fun if you're into money games with your buddies. To me, Silvertip is one of the most overrated (and over-priced) courses in the mountains. 

 

I'd stay away from 'The Wood'. It's really pricey and I've never had a meal there that I'd write home about. The Schnitzel Haus is my wife and my favourite place to eat in town. There's a really good authentic mexican joint at the south end of downtown too, I forget what it's called. We live well west of Calgary and visit Canmore a lot and as Kale_m says, there's plenty of great food and drink.

I would have to agree with MB and play both Kananaskis courses. I like Silvertip for the views, cart ride, and a few holes. It is the funner drinking course. However, SC is the better golf course. If any of them, I would cut Banff first though. However, since you are coming from the States, I would want you to play it so you could say you did. It's definitely far far from trash. The mountain resorts are usually awesome. 

As for Canmore eats, there are many choices depending on what you want. The drake has fun vibes for a pub. 

Hope all the politics and stuff is done prior to you getting here. We love our American friends!

Silvertip is not that bad. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of great mountain views which means some quirky lies. 

Banff Springs is pretty good but just a tad disappointing given its price and reputation.

I looked at Greywolf, it is still on the bucket list for Canada golf. It's just a bit out of the way for this current trip.

I agree with the above, both courses at Kananaskis would be better than Silvertip. But... I personally love Silvertip. It is not your typical, traditional, good golf course. You are playing directly on the side of the mountain, and to me its pretty spectacular. Yes there are some goofy holes, but if you just want to have fun and hit some shots that you will never hit anywhere else, it is something to try. Banff, Jasper, Kananaskis are all in valleys with views of mountains. Silvertip is playing directly on the mountain, which is pretty neat to me.

Ya I'm not a silvertip fan in the slightest but I've softened my stance and understand why people visiting would be interested in playing it.

I've played on TERRIBLE greens out there (which they blame on elk lol. I'm a hunter, there ain't no elk sign on the greens) and I've ruined a Vokey on a rock in a greenside bunker. It has some views, but so does the rest of the town. For the price, Silvertip is a flat-out ripoff.

Was awesome to get out! Swing needs some work I didnt hit as many balls as I usually do over the winter. Started to hit it better on the back nine. Hope this weather passes so we can get out again soon!

Man, has the weather ever turned though. Booking Kananaskis today - wish me luck lol
