Homestead/Greenbriar as a single

Hey guys, I don't usually venture over into the Mid-Atlantic folder, as I am from Missouri. But I am doing a little recon work for next summer. The last couple of years, my wife and I have gone to Kohler, WI but I am looking for a change of pace/scenery. Considering going to WV/VA area and playing The Homestead and Greenbriar Resort courses and possible Primland. Just wondering what the chances are of playing as a single (wife doesn't play) without staying at the resorts? This is very early on, but any advice would be appreciated.

If you want to play the better course go to The Greenbrier. I think you’ll have a better overall experience as there as well as things have gone down hill a bit at The Homestead recently in my opinion. Omni just isn’t putting as much money into the property as they should to keep it on par with other resorts.

 

That being said, The Homestead will be the more budget friendly option and is still a fantastic course. Rated top 10 in the state amongst public courses every year. Regardless of where you choose I would call ahead of time and ask about any conferences or events they may have going on to be sure you find a time you aren’t competing with that as I know The Homestead hosts conferences pretty regularly and I imagine The Greenbrier probably does too.

 

Don’t think you can go wrong with either course but hope that helps.

Personally, I like the Old Course at the Homestead better than the Cascades Course due to the views, Donald Ross domed greens, and its unique 6

X 6 x 6 layout (equal number or par 3, 4,

And 5 holes).

 

Also, Primland is in another league from the other two resorts IMO.

I'm a Homestead fan. I love the vibe there, and both golf courses are a lot of fun. I'd call the golf shop, but I don't think you would have a hard time getting tee times on either course as a single.

I've not played the Homestead so can't comment on it, but my wife and I visited the Greenbrier this past Easter and the entire place was excellent. I played as a single with no problem and my wife rode in a cart (she doesn't play golf). The greens and bunkering are excellent. The restaurants are very good. The Congressional fallout bunker tour was cool. My wife is a gambler so spent some time at the casino. There are many activities in addition to the golf. Unfortuantely it was a chilly rainy week.

You can play either place without staying there.

Never played Primland or the Greenbrier, but I can vouch for the Homestead.  I worked at the resort in 1998 and had a great time while living on site in staff accommodations right in Hot Springs.  At the time there were three courses on property but I understand that they have since closed the Lower Cascades course.

 

The Cascades is a tougher challenge over the Old Course but it is no slouch by any stretch. 

 

Was very fortunate to see Sam Snead on property 2-3x week hitting balls at the back of the range at the teaching academy with his little dog along for the ride.  I believe Sam was in his early 80's but he still had that sweet swing.  Was hitting balls one afternoon up at the teaching academy after a rain storm had come through and all of a sudden I hear from 50 yards away in the teaching hut "hey kid! wanna know what you're doing wrong?"  It was Sam Snead.  Sam proceeded to walk down and give me a few tips over the course of 15 minutes or so.  Never been so nervous in my golfing life.

I was at the Greenbrier about 20 years ago and it was first class all the way. Prices were too!  Never played Homestead but looked at their web site last year and stay and play packages were very reasonable.  The two resorts are only about a half-hour apart so treat yourself and play both.
