Best Golf Club Deals

i happened upon a set of "used" hogan apex blades in a 2nd swing for $129. used is in quotation marks because, as far as my trained eyes could tell, the only club that had seen a ball was the 7 iron. i almost felt guilty. that is the best example of a deal i got from 2nd swing, but i have to say i kind of feel responsible for that place going out of business. man do i miss that place.

Yeah, I bought a few things in 2nd Swing 6-7 years ago. It wasn't all that long ago that blades were really out of favor amongst the general public. Alot of pro's were playing the cavity back's, top amateur's, etc, etc. I remember when Titleist had no blade offerings after they discontinued the Tour Model series.

 

Back then, you couldn't give away blades, almost nobody wanted them. Now that the high profile pro's are back to playing these things, you can tell that the junior/college crowd is big into them and I think that has kept a bid in the re-sale market.

Callaway FT-5 Tour 10.5 Degree w/ VS Proto 60 shaft factory installed. Hit 3 times, 295 bucks. Watched pro at my club get it out of the Callaway box, unwrap it and hit it. He said he did not like it as much as his TM Superquad TP so I offered to buy it, he sold it for half what THE CLUB payed for him to just test it out... Must be nice to have an expense account! Called in registered it w/ Callaway and it is all mine! LOVE IT.

 

I also got an adams tech os hybrid for 78 bucks brand new from my local Pro Golf store. Guy just knocked 65% off because I am a "good customer".

Mizuno TP-19/TP-9 irons at £1 each. Found them by chance when I saw some PING irons (obviously fakes on a second look) in the window of a random pawn shop. Well used and they needed a regrip - but they are still my current favorite irons.

 

Awsome clubs when you hit them right, just a shame I am not consistant enough to really appreciate them!

I picked up a Scotty Teryllium Newport 2 like new for $85 in Colorado on vacation. I traded it for $125 8 months ago and saw recently the trade in value was $166 on the valueguide. Man, I should have waited to trade it or sold it on Ebay.

It was thrown in with the Titleist 681 irons i snagged for $ 250 bucks out the trunk of a guys car. (no they weren't stolen, they were his).

As far as used or previously year's model clubs go there have been plenty of deals but the best deal I've gotten was 2.5 years ago at Golfsmith in NJ.

 

The Callaway X-Tours were first released and I loved hitting them into the net.

 

$999 brand new. Yeesh.

 

A salesmen at the store bought one of the first sets, tried them once and didn't like them. They ended up in the used club bin for $900. No bites on them at all. A month later, around middle of April, they were marked down to $700. I was sorely tempted.

 

Then, around May 1st they held a "reds dot" sale. 15% off on anything marked with a red dot. Sure enough the X-Tours had the red dot. I scooped them out of the bin, took them over to the cashier and asked $700-15% for $595, right ? The guy said "Yup" and I bought 'em then and there.

 

Virtually new, just released $1000 set of irons for $600. And this is my 3rd full season playing the X-Tours. I rarely play more than one season with ANY club in my bag. (LOL) Not bad, not bad at all. And for a retail outlet almost unheard of....... ;)

I got a used Nike Sumo Squared at Golfsmith for $230. I thought something was wrong with it or it was a really bad club from the price, but they told me it was mismarked, but they still had to give me that price. I loved the club from first hit, and it was the right loft and shaft stiffness, so I had to take it. Come to find out, it was a nonconforming club, so I sent it back and got a brand new club along with a dozen Ignite balls for my "trouble". Definitely made me a nike fan.

Cheapest has to be Mizuno TP-19 blades at £1 each!

 

Best buy though goes to my brand new forged, cavity back irons for $149. They are not a "premium" brand (Tommy Armour), but I love them! So much easier to hit than my lovely blades!

I got a Never Compromise Voodoo Daddy for £20, yes ill type that again, £20 a month after it came out, was playing at a club in essex and i asked the boy to try it out on the putting green and he said he didnt like it, did i want it, i said how much, he said, £20!

If not those two bargains!!! I got my Grafalloy Blue for my Sasquatch, brand new, uncut or tipped, £17!

Purchased my 1st set of Ping Eye 2's from my brother for $100.00 about 20 years ago when he did not like them.

 

I used them for about 15 years and sold them for $300.00.

 

And paid a friend of mine who is a club pro cost on my new set, which if I recall was under $400.00 about 5 years ago.

 

All in all I am averaging $100.00 per set of irons, not bad in my opinion.

My best deal was a Ping Eye 2 (3-S) for $100 from my barber. This was about 10 years ago when the Tommy Armour Titanium irons came out and he was dead set on getting them. He was only asking a hundo for the irons and i threw him the hundred dollar bill and ran. Talked to him about two months after the sale and he told me to contact him when I was wanting to get rid of them. I guess his new clubs didn't live up to the hype they were getting.

bought a Ping BeCu SW with low number in the bin at Golf Galaxy for $19...sold it on ebay for $150.

 

Best ever though was when I got a 983X prototype driver from a tour player through silent auction for $250 and sold it on ebay for $1600 to some dude in Japan.

Got my Ping S59 Tours used at Golf Galaxy for $285 and the only club that had been hit was the 6 iron. A week later I got a Scotty Tour Laguna at the same GG for $49. The best deal was my V-steel 3 wood that I got from 2nd Swing the week that they closed for $2.

I found an Adams 2080 on globalgolf.com for $39.99. It was listed as a regular Ovation fairway wood, and I'd been looking for one in 14.5* for like six months.

 

Was pretty happy about the whole thing at the time. Now I can't stand the thing.

I was sick when I saw the guy pick it up...I was right there and would've scooped it up, pulled the shaft, sold it on here, and only had a cool $100 in the G10 head!!! That would've been the deal of the century! I'd have then shafted up the g10 head and gamed the crap out of it!!!

my best has to be when i snagged a 2006 Titleist stand bag, containing 3-PW MP32s (8.5/10), some shoes / trousers / tees / ball markers etc.. etc.. - all for £122 ($245).

Sold the MP32s on for £249 ($500) the next week

I saw that you are from Wisconsin, are talking about the 2nd swing in Brookfield? That was my favorite store. I must have gone there at least once a week, maybe more. their were so many great deals when they went out of business.

i picked up my sonartec S.S 3.5 19* 5 wood with a Grafalloy tour x shaft, i paid $40 and found the shaft alone on ebay for $150 so i think thats a good deal,
