Kitchenaid Senior's Pga Championship

am surprised there is no thread yet on this event so am just going to start one..

i was surprised that Steve Stricker was not playing in this senior's major then i saw that he is close to the leaders at Colonial so i guess his priorities is still with the PGA Tour..

considering prize money is a little less than half at the Kitchenmaid event i don't really blame him..

am also a bit surprised that a PGA--not PGA Tour-- professional is leading and quite a few of then are doing well so far unlike the PGA Championship wherein we seldom see them do as well...

it would also be great to see one of them win..

There's the knock that a senior major isn't a 'real' major, but it seemed important to Colin Montgomerie when he won the Senior PGA, not having won a regular major. Stricker also has never won a major. Maybe he feels he will have more chances, or its not really important to him. Also, with his work with the Ryder and President's Cups, it keeps him more in tune with the current players on the teams. He doesn't have the luxury of playing in all the events he used to, he has to strike while the iron is hot, and Colonial has a decent field.

You can pencil Stricker in for a few US Senior Opens, I'd guarantee that.

Strick has committed to the US Senior Open. He's still trying to make the regular US Open as well, so he's still playing on the big Tour. He still wants to maintain his card as long as he can, so he plays selected events on the big Tour where he knows he can truly compete and contend, like this week at Colonial, to ensure he finishes in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup.

When he played with Phil recently, Phil asked Stricker what he was doing on the Champions Tour, because he's still plenty good enough to play on the PGA Tour full time. I think you'll see Strick play the US Senior Open, his Champions Tour event in Madison in June, and maybe the Senior Players. But I think he truly wants to give it a go on the big Tour to try and win one more time. His game is good enough to do it, especially at a place like Colonial, or Memphis, or the John Deere.

Stuart Smith who shot 66 in the first round is the head pro at a course I used to belong to in Reno, Sommersett CC. Extremely good ball striker and played for UCLA before playing on various tours. Struggles with the putter which is something I understand. A really great guy and I am pleased he is doing well.

Played a lot with Stuart on the Golden State Tour when we were both "trying to make it"

A very good player, hard worker, and good guy.

Glad he's playing well

Somebody needs to stop Jack from designing courses.

What are your thoughts as to "why" Jack Nicolas should stop designing courses?

For one reason - if he can't keep the spelling of his name consistent, he has no business designing golf courses.

HAHAHAHA ... Oh man, I swear that I typed it correctly and then this darn "auto-correct" or "auto-complete" function on most devices thought that I had spelled it incorrectly!

i am pretty sure most if not all club pros had aspirations of playing the tour at one time or another...unfortunately not too many have been successful so far..

...but they all have got some game..

PS: just saw that Stuart shot a disappointing 83 after his first round 66 to miss the cut...pity.

Maybe Strick also wanted to play Colonial---- Nothing at all against the Nicklaus course in Michigan but hell after all it is Colonial--- If I had been in his position and had his game I would have chosen Colonial

Yep I was watching it yesterday and am watching the re broadcast now. Do not know the guy but really felt sorry for him--- Like it when some of these old school club pros come out from behind the counter and kick butt---- But then again he can always say he did lead the first round no one can take that from him

Maybe Strick also wanted to play Colonial

And why wouldn't he? Past Colonial champion that is fuly exempt for the 2017/2018 PGA Tour. Play the main tour as long as you can. He will never have to worry about playing status on the Champions Tour.

Dreams are not meant to come true.
Dreams are meant to keep you going through the darkness.

Hmm. Verplank with the cart. I remember back in the day when Casey Martin was in the media for trying to get the rights to use one on the PGA that Verplank and Cink were interviewed being against it.

Funny how things change.

Verplank, a high degree diabetic was pretty clear back then, and felt the rules should be same for everyone.

I played with Casey in a few tournaments after his case, and he told me he felt the same.

Rules are the same for all, players on Champions pretty simple

If you say so. Seems like a double-standard to me.

I don't have any problem with Casey and the cart

But carts are allowed on the Champions tour, for everyone who wants to take one.

If they weren't allowed and he was trying to change the rule, yeah then I'd understand

Ironically in the local paper here that course was mentioned because of mountain lions spotted there, next day I check my local paper from where I’m from nw Indiana headline is Nevada club pro in lead.
