Vokey S vs D Grind

Interested in how the Vokey S grind compares to the D grind. Does anyone have experience opening up the face with the S grind and also using it out of the sand. Considering both of these grinds for my lob wedge (which I use out of the sand as well).

Was just fit at our national fitting center.

For me and my shallow path to the ball the S grind was perfect out of the bunker. Medium to soft sand. The D grind had too much bounce for me, and it wouldn’t enter the sand as easily.

 

In the rough I can open the S grind a bit, but the M is much easier to open the face. Again the D grind had too much bounce for me.

the S-Grind is great, if you don't like to manipulate the clubface when playing your wedges. M and D-Grind are more versatile. If you need less bounce, because of your AoA or course conditions, go with the M. If more bounce is your preference, go with D. If you tend not to open up the face on a lot of occasions, go with S

I have the 58D and I love it. I tried the M and it dug too much. For full shots, the S is really nice but also allows some relief when opening the face however I found it to not have the same playability from bad lies. For me, the D works better from all lies and all shots. I use my 58 from the sand and to play just about all touch shots around the green so the extra sole grind is very helpful. If you can try both from the grass, I highly recommend it. The sole grinds are very different and react to everyone's swings differently.

You probably don’t want to hear this, but you really need to find a demo day or a fitting center at a club or range and hit them. Not off the mats. That’s almost worthless. Any wedge works off a mat. Hit Off grass and sand.

 

People can tell you their own experience till the cows come home, but until you actually hit different grinds you just won’t know what you like.

 

I thought I’d love the 60 D grind as I’m very steep and a digger. It actually Doesn’t totally suit me. I don’t dislike it. It’s a good club. it just isn’t ideal for me.

 

That said. Neither is the S. I’m actually using the M, which I thought I wouldn’t like. LOL.

 

If you want a very nice condition Sm6 60S or a nearly mint Sm7 60D send me a PM. We can talk. I’m about to list both of them. Maybe you buy both and try them. Sell the one you don’t like. That’s what I did. Bought M,S,and D and hit all of them in real conditions at my range.

My vokey sm6 54 is an S grind and I love it. I play a lot of square and full shots with my wedges so the tradional looking sole works better for me. I could have gone with the M for more versatility, but I have a 58L that I use that for. The S does well out of the bunker if I have plenty of green to work with. Can spin it or just let it run. I've always played low bounce wedges for my lob. That's just what works best for me and allows me to play whatever shot I want too.
