Rolling the hands in take-away

I stopped doing by performing a few practice takeaways by gripping way down the shaft so that the butt end of the grip was pressed into my chest. Then during the takeaway I could not roll my wrists without it twisting up my shirt and making it super noticeable. I would do a few of these and then try to keep that feel during a full swing.

Two drills that helped me with this...

1. As you take the club back really push down on the handle with the pad of the left hand while gently pulling up on the handle with the right index finger. Do this with a split grip to accentuate the feel.

2. Take the club back with a feeling of the face "looking" at the ground until the club gets to parallel.

I got into the bad habit of doing this. This then requires perfect unrolling when making contact. Too much to do then! Anyone know of an exercise to get out of this problem?

Some forearm rotation is needed - as I understand it (I'm not a pro) the big question and issues tend to come from what happens to the hand path when you do that rotation? If you want more detailed feedback - post a swing video.

Monte advocates upper arm rotation rather than forearm rotation.

...gently pulling up on the handle with the right index finger....

This is the feel that works for me - left index finger since I'm LH.

There's a guy I play with frequently whose pre-shot routine is basically rolling the hands. I can't even look at him anymore when he does it.

I use (2) but I think of the face as looking at the ball along the swing path.

If my striking becomes more inconsistent than normal I will do a few practice swings stopping with the club parallel to the ground to verify that the club sole appears ~15 degrees anti-clockwise of vertical. I clearly lack the skill to rotate the club face back on the down swing so from my POV keeping face at right angles to the swing plane means one less thing to go wrong.

in the take away and backswing think about keeping the right arm above the left all the way to the top. It will shorten the swing,, sync it up and keep you from rolling in..gl
This has really worked for me too. The key is too feel it past p2.

I also like to pre-set a bit of left forearm roation clockwise to further elimintate this death move early in the takeaway.

I have an exercise you might want to try?

much like the idea that the face points at the ball,

Setup in your stance. now grip down on a shaft ( use maybe a driver or a longer club) so the butt of the club touches your stomach and or belly button. While maintaining your natural grip. Now rotate around your trunk while keeping the shaft touching your stomach. the club should not roll or move at all but maintains its position on your stomach. this just a 3-9 drill so you dont take a full swing, but just the sensation or feeling on the back swing where your arms/hands or forearms dont rotate and stay centered to your chest!

I just had an online lesson with Dan on this. You also have to make sure your hands work directly in with your initial move. Im definitely getting better but how are you able to keep the right above the left from say waist high to the top. This is where I am still struggling. Dan is excellent and a terrific communicator and the struggle is not a result of anything related to him, but rather trying to break a lifetime of the bad habit. I just wondered what finally worked for you coming from a fellow player.

I couldnt believe through my own video after the lesson that even when i thought i was taking the hands directly in that the left hand was still moving out. Classic example of reality not matching my perception of reality.

This drill seems to be a good one to keep from opening the shoulders early - which, for me, is why the club gets inside if I'm not careful.
