Seeking a good orange ball

dubbelbogey

Recommended Posts

I want to give a bright orange ball a try. They just show up better in the rough than do either white or yellow under harsh, sun-glare conditions. I wear amber tinted sunglasses when it's really sunny out and white and yellow balls are nearly indistinguishable at a distance with these glasses. Orange, on the other hand, really stands out nicely.

I've always played with various "high end" balls, most recently ProV1, ChromeSoft, Z-Star (yellow). I generally like the way those types of balls play and feel. But I'm by no means stuck on having to play with what the tour guys use. While I like urethane covered golf balls, that's not a strict requirement.

I want a ball that feels reasonable and performs well with full and partial wedge shots. It doesn't need to be absolute max greenside spin/stopping power, but it has to be good.

So - what would you recommend? Wilson Duo Soft? Callway SuperSoft? Others?

(Some balls I haven't liked: NXT Tour, Bridgestone e6)

Volvik S3 comes in orange. It's a high end urethane ball. You can pay out the @$$ for the Japan only Srixon XV that's available in orange. Next best bet is Callaway Superhot or Cut Golf Matte, both 3 piece that's just a notch below a tour ball. I believe the TM Project S is the same thing.

Also, check out the Red version of the Vice Pro line. Impossible not to see in the grass.

If you can’t find a good orange ball, you could always try one of the varieties of Chromesoft Truvis. They stick out pretty well, and are fun to watch bouncing onto the green like. Little soccer ball.

Srixon Z355 - Miyazaki
Taylormade V-Steel 4-wood
Taylormade V-Steel 7-wood
Adams CB3 - KBS Tour 90
Wilson Staff FG TC 56/60
Yes Callie - bunch of lead tape on the bottom

OP -- Try out our Matte Orange golf balls. You can purchase just a sleeve so it's cheap to just see if you even like it.

https://www.cutgolfc...3xfpl09vvtjsh69

Thanks! I just so happened to have done just that yesterday. I'll give that sleeve a whirl and see how it goes.

As for the Truvis comment earlier, that's an idea, too. I have played with the yellow/black Truvis, and it has the same basic visibility issue as the plain yellow Chrome Soft. I've not tried the red or pink model, but they may be a possibility too, but I'd really like to give a bright orange ball a try.

I did play one orange Bridgestone e6 ball, and loved the visibility. It really stood out in the grass even when I was wearing my amber sunglasses. I just didn't care for the feel of that ball.

Second the Volvik S3 suggestion. It’s a really good ball. Sometimes tough to find though.

Unfortunately, there is no Tour level ball in orange in the US. Volvik does not make a Tour ball. That's why Bubba went back to Titleist. Their balls are clicky as can be.

Srixon makes the Z Stars in Orange but only for Japan.

Seems odd that every manufacturer decided to make yellow balls, and none made orange. Would have been a way to stand out from the others.

theres no market in the US for them. a few thousand people does not make it worth a product run.

Tour balls can’t be clicky? Volvik balls are played by several golfers in LPGA and Asian Tour.

Their balls feel nothing like Srixons, TM, Pro V or Chrome Soft. More like the old Pinnacles.

Agree to disagree I suppose. S3 and S4 feel like ProV1 and V1x to me.

I will also add my vote for the Volvik S3.

My eyes suck. I play with glasses, because it's tough to find contacts that work for me without being so thick that they irritate my eyes. I rarely ever lose an orange Volvik in flight, and as long as I can feel how the club hit it, I can go find it with ease anyway.

Ignore the Bubba aspect. Someone who swerves the ball like him should never have made a change. That's not an indictment of Volvik.

I did a ball fitting. For distance, only the B330 went reasonably farther for me, by about four yards (Chrome Soft and Pro V1 were both within a yard). For greenside spin, the TP ball and the Pro V1 were marginally higher, as in 5%.

Bonus, the Volvik feels better off the putter than any ball I have ever tried.

It's among the most used balls on the LPGA. My swing is basically high-level LPGA speed (Driver ~ 110-112). If it works for them...

EDIT: Somewhat unlike the wonderful but discontinued Vista iS (best feel off putter of any ball, I swear on my life), it actually can take a pretty good beating. Wedges don't chop it up too quick, and I have hit some trees and cart paths without any obvious damage that would take it out of play.

Pro V1s and ChomeSofts, both of which I've played plenty, are basically done if they hit anything hard, including, by the way, the grooves of a new wedge.

OP, not orange but try the red balls by Vice. They stand out just as much as an orange ball.

Have you found any good deals on the S3s? I'd even consider used ball (but am guessing that's a real longshot as it's not a common ball among the masses.)

Only when it's a closeout on a prior model year. The prior gen S3's (which I think are likely the same as the current gen with new packaging) were able to be found last year for $20/dozen at discount online retailers.

Without something like that, probably going to have to shell out $45 for the S3.

I've been playing Vice neon lime for about a year now, and love them. The wife just got me a dozen of the limited edition "Wild Winds" ball, which are only available in the neon red. Let me tell you, that red seriously stands out just about everywhere.

Wouldn't want to play them in the fall in New England, though...

Pretty much what dingus said.

Although a brick and mortar store might have them cheap. Not sure how many people are really buying them after the original curiosity when Bubba signed.
