St. Andrews June 14-18

Touching down on Thursday morning. Looking forward to five days of golf staying at the Old Course Hotel and Rusacks during my stay. Plan on playing at the Old Course each day lining up. Anyone around? Sunday will play something else. Let me know or send a PM.

You often visit St Andrews? Jigger inn / road hole bar are great to finish the day when staying at Old Course Hotel. When at Russack's the Dunvegan is around the corner :-)

I have nothing against the Jigger Inn or Dunvegan, they're lovely places, but they're filled with golfing tourists. I've suggested before on other threads, if you'd like to get away from some of the foreign visitors, go on past the Dunvegan. Try the Cross Keys in Market Street, or the Whey Pat outside the old city gate at South Street, or any other pub you come to. And have a brilliant time, I love the town and the golf in St Andrews.

I have nothing against the Jigger Inn or Dunvegan, they're lovely places, but they're filled with golfing tourists. I've suggested before on other threads, if you'd like to get away from some of the foreign visitors, go on past the Dunvegan. Try the Cross Keys in Market Street, or the Whey Pat outside the old city gate at South Street, or any other pub you come to. And have a brilliant time, I love the town and the golf in St Andrews.

Crail Balcomie is not a long drive from St Andrews, very accessible, and nice sea side course .

 

Kingsbarns even closer but will be harder to get on on a last minut sudsy I think..

It's a bonkers slow trip via train, especially on a Sunday. Weather isn't looking too bad on the day, hopefully it stays dry for you! Such a fantastic course :)

Reckon it's about a 5hr round trip. It's not a simple scoot down the road, especially during the week when you're passing through a few nasty stretches of motorway, I wouldn't recommend it for a day trip from St. Andrews Mon-Fri.

I just threw it out there, as it's a Sunday and if you're only playing 1 round on the day, why not do it. Especially as it seems the OP will be in the same place the whole time, 1 day of driving isn't too much.

 

For where you're going though, you'll see enough awesomeness in North Berwick, TOC, Carnoustie, Balgownie, Cruden Bay, that you wouldn't need to do the extra jaunt. That said, we drove over from Edi (on the weekend round trip under 4hrs) to Prestwick and back to play it on the final full day of one of our trips a couple years ago.

Ok cool, I wasn't thinking it would be super close. I'll have to save Prestwick for another time. At the moment, it looks like I'll be able to hit up TOC, Carnoustie, North Berwick, and Cruden Bay for my 4 rounds on this trip. Just awaiting the 2019 busy dates to be announced (was emailed last week that they would post those within 2 weeks) so I can start booking/planning. If I'm able to add in a 5th round, it will probably be Jubilee or New.

Just came back from st. Andrews.

It shouldn't be hard to find a tee time at Kingsbarn, but I suggest to play Jubilee or Elie.

New course is easier but I didn't like that much.

I just visited Crail but didn't play it, it seemed fine.

Drive St Andrews to Prestwick is probably 2 and a half hours, not a fun drive though.

 

Play nearer, I even would have suggested come up to ABZ and play with me but course is closed for 9 days, so I have no where to play either.

Just played the old course today. Arrived at the old course hotel around 10 and went over to the pavilion to put my name in as it was windy as hell.

 

Well as luck would have it went back at 130 and went to bought a stocking hat at the gift shop behind 18 and wandered back when Charlotte the starter asked me if I was ready to go now? I said yes. She said you are on the tee next at 2 pm.

 

Paid the 180 pounds and off I went with three good guys. Two from the states and one from Ireland. All singles as I believe as local tee time cancelled with the winds gusting to over 50-60 miles per hour.

 

Loved it but putting was so difficult with that wind as your ball never rests it is always wobbling. I’ll brag a bit and say I had a birdie putt on 17 and 18 just off the front for eagle but managed to three jack each!!!!!☹️☹️☹️

 

All in all had drinks with one guy after and was one of my top memories golfing for sure.

 

My feet are killing me and just hope my plantar fasciitis doesn’t flare up. Tomorrow was going to wake up at 2 am and get on TOC again but feeling a little worn out as my upgrade didn’t clear on Etihad . We shall see but TOC is closed to outside play on Saturday for local tourney.

 

Transferring to Rusacks tomorrow for the next three nights.

Update #25 and the guy ahead of me couldn’t provide documentation for his handicap so no dice buddy! Thanks as it just increased my chances.

Good luck, playing the Old 2 days in a row sounds great, now you'll know where all the invisible bunkers are. And Its hard to sympathize with a guy so clueless that he didn't have his handicap stuff.

Nice to know that there are sometimes last minute playing opportunities @ Kingsbarns! I thought it was always very bussy because last time we played Kingsbarnes as 2nd flight of the day, sun coming up from the sea :-) , and the course was packed all day.

A couple guys don’t show up thankfully and went off at 3:20. A threesome got in off the ballot from the UK. Nice guys and my caddie was a character Nick was his name. Said he has been caddying there for 51 years. On hole 2 I took out my yardage book and said so I want to hit it left of this bunker pointing to the yardage book graphic.

 

He said, “put that f.....g thing away and I’ll get ya around just fine.”

 

Crusty but was goood at reading putts, not that I executed that advice well however. Still couldn’t putt. Had 43 putts yesterday and knocked 4 off today! Only 39 putts for a 92. Yesterday shot 93 in that hellacious wind. Much better ball striking round yesterday.

 

Loving life and thank god for this experience. Not sure what I’ll do tomorrow, which is the great thing about traveling alone. Three days left.
