Yes. Big Phil fan, but what he did today was just stupid. Don’t think he should be crucified like he murdered someone but forget the rules, it was a total bs move. should’ve been disqualified as soon as it happened. Complete embarrassment. There was a post earlier that brought up “what if player (fill in the blank) pulled that move”, and I think it was spot on. Phil gets a pass for this and he shouldn’t.

Phil should withdraw. Because regardless of what the rules say, hitting a moving ball because you're frustrated and not willing to finish the hole properly, is not in the spirit of the game.

 

There's something about intentionally hitting a moving ball that throws sand in the face of the game and rules. Apologize and withdraw.

It has been reported that Phil essentially offered to WD tonight. The USGA -- and it may have been Mike Davis himself -- told Phil that they thought they had made the correct ruling with a 2-stroke penalty. I have checked my copy of the Decisions on the Rules of Golf, and there is no Decision which addresses this under 33-7.

Of course it did! His two shot savings probably saved him from a three or four shot self inflicted wound--that puts everyone who did not use the "running putt" method to keep their balls on the green.

Mickelson explicitly said that that was not the case.

 

And to the extent that some will assume so, Mickelson has confessed that it was not his finest moment.

 

Proving that indeed he has a conscience (and I think he does), Phil reportedly offered to WD.

 

How much more wrong can we make your post? To the exent that two hole placements were bad, the USGA is way ahead of both you and Phil Mickelson in saying that in hindsight, they were regrettable hole placements.

He had three holes and a few minutes after the round to prepare his explanation. Classic Phil. It was a pretty good one at that, but total BS.
