Cobbs Creek Golf Club Restoration

Pretty cool to hear they will be restoring cobbs creek. Saw this made national news as well. With the lack of good public courses if the Philly area this is awesome news.

This is fantastic news, congratulations to all involved. The course has some awesome bones...cant wait to see it evolve.

Heard the news a couple days ago and it's gonna be exciting seeing it come together. The plans are already done and consist of restoring the course to its original design, turning Karakung into 9 holes, then using those 9 holes to lengthen the course so it can host tour events. Can't wait to see.

Played the "tour event composite holes" that will be routed at Karakung with Joe Bausch a while back. Course is going to have some serious teeth!

This is VERY exciting. Because of where I live, I mostly play the Philly Muni - FDR, managed by Billy Casper Golf. I tend to play after-work rounds when the daylight will sustain it, so to treat myself at Cobbs occasionally will be a very exciting alternative. This has been a long time coming, so congrats to all involved and thank you to The Friends of Cobbs Creek for their tenacity and persistence.

@jjmurry according to the Friends At Cobbs Creek website “The group also laid out plans and a proposed timetable for next steps. Essentially, the remainder of 2019 and all of 2020 will be spent in the permitting and planning and fundraising stages. Accomplishing that, the course will undergo construction and seeding during 2021 with a planned reopening during the May or June 2022 time frame. More to come as events warrant during this very exciting time.

 

We are at this stage of the project due to the dedication and commitment of John Burnes and Chris Lange, leaders of the Cobbs Creek Restoration and Community Foundation.”

 

There are signs of work like heavy machinery on a hole or two addressing drainage.

 

Very exciting. This course will undoubtedly absorb some FDR diehards (including me) when that course closes permanently in October. Twice as far as FDR from my house, but we are spoiled by an abundance of courses in the SE PA area.

Oh excellent - I think I saw this update after I made my post. I must admit I wasn't aware of the history of the course back when I was playing it around 2011-2015 in college. It was basically a dump at that point (pre-clubhouse being burnt down) and I never really thought twice about it since it was such a cheap round of golf (I had to save money for beer, of course). I've since moved out of the area and am very much looking forward to coming back when cobbs creek is all fixed up!

@jjmurry I’m certain the FoCC will be planning quite the gala ‘reopening’ when all is said and done. There is much opportunity for fundraising/sponsoring that seems as yet untapped. It will be interesting to see new daily-play and possibly membership fee structures. Don’t be surprised if the $17 mid-day round with cart is a thing of the past. That said, once restored to original condition, a course of that caliber is certainly worth more than $17 a round. The art will be keeping true to the architect Hugh Wilson’s original intent, which was a universally financially accessible venue to ‘grow the game’, while running the course without financial losses. One unsubstantiated rumor I heard was the possibility of zip code based greens fees. I.e same zip as Cobbs: $, 191 zip residents(Philadelphia): $$, other zips: $$$. Makes sense because it keeps the spirit of the Muni alive, and is not an uncommon approach.

 

I am very excited to watch the restoration.

I agree with this. I remember hearing in an interview with the friends of Cobb's creek that they intend it to be the Torrey pines east or something along those lines. Again, I am all for that! I'm closely watching from down in dc!

I also heard the same rumors about a Torrey Pines east but I cannot get myself to believe it. It would be amazing, but it would be shocking that a project associated with the city of Philadelphia would be such a success. I’ll believe it when I see it.
