Maltby TS2

I have the small logo up on mine. However, note that for Maltby shafts they are "100% frequency tested in both the 90° and 0° shaft planes for perfect shaft oscillation" aka they pure them and mark them so you should follow the markings for how they are installed. Mine just happened to be logo down.

Speaking of Maltby shafts, had an interesting conversation with Isaac over there when I picked up my TS1-IM 7 iron earlier in the week. Mentioned to him that I might try a "poor man's" autoflex build with their new KE4 Max driver head. And was planning to do the MPF UL shaft.

He went on to tell me that they profiled an Autoflex shaft, and it was identical to their M890 shaft. Like virtually indistinguishable. So I may have a new frontrunner for this fun little build. Only "downside" is the weight is in the more traditional range of driver shafts. And part of the recommendation from folks who've tried the DIY autoflex is that you go down in weight by 15-20 grams. Will likely just pick up both the MPF UL and M890. Given they're each under $30.

Longer shafts are in theory more flexible

In a golf application, I wouldn't say that's true.

The reason bore thru shaft installs play stiffer is that more of the butt section is brought into play (the butt is the stiffest part of the shaft).  This follows when dealing with Blind Bore hosels, and shorter BBGM clubheads such as the TS3.

Shaft profile will vary the actual effect.

Install/insertion depth has gotten a lot of mention over the years, but it doesn't really come into play, with one rather large exception, the 975D (and the 975J, maybe?), which had a disturbingly long insertion depth, due to the long hosel on top of the bore thru.  As memory serves, it was 3.5" to even 4".

I doubt we're going to see irons with that much insertion depth.  😉

That's interesting but which flex(es) of Autoflex did they profile?

Am thinking a TS3/TS4 combo would be fun to build.

Glad you’re feeling better. High praise for the TS3 given your list. I think they look great. It is sort of difficult to tell the differences between the TS3 and TS4, but they look like they can combo well.

The blade lengths are stated to be exactly the same.  The TS3 has a hair wider top-line and sole, along with the lower Actual Vertical COG at .691" vs the TS4 at .761".  Ideal for low COG longer irons with "mid" COG short irons.

Of note with the same blade lengths, is that the horizontal COG or what they refer to as "C-dimension" is exactly the same at 1.463".  This is a little longer than their previous (2nd) version of the Maltby MMB, which is 1.391", dictated by the TS4 having about a 1.25mm longer blade length vs the MMB

All indications are that they would combo extremely well

Those shafts are not "pured", but frequency tested at 0 and 90 degree planes.  If those planes match closely, the orientation of the shaft should really not matter much.  Maltby does this in the MPF and Rapport shafts.  The marks on the shaft do not necessarily align with the logo just as with a pured shaft.

Puring is just a fancy frequency test in all directions, so yeah they aren't truly pured but checked on two planes so they can frequency match the shafts. It's like a poor man's puring.

Keep us updated on that build! I was thinking of grabbing one of the UL shafts to test a lightweight driver shaft. TXG did an interesting video on ultra light driver shafts back at the beginning of the year and Matty added 3-4 mph of clubhead. Would be interesting to see them do it again with his swing changes that have added a bunch of speed, he could get close to 190mph ball speed.

As much as I also love the TXG comparisons on these shafts, the 1 major issue is that they are comparing the ultra premium $$$ models that they would offer as a fitting company. If you've followed any of the Otto Phlex stuff, there's a good variety of options in the sub $100 range that have been battle proven. The best and most successful example is the Garafalloy PLB 45g for $60. Because there's no profit margin for a company like TXG with a $60 shaft They would never showcase it against the $400 to $800 brands.

Have you come across a Ventus Black comparable? I see that the Prolaunch Red has the same MPF code and real similar weight/torque. The dominance of the Ventus line has had me questioning whether the investment would be worth it. But another part of me thinks there are equivalent shafts out there and a lot of it is hype/marketing.

took my new TS3 with a rapid taper S to the range to demo (thanks Popeye!). Club felt really solid, and the shaft feels pretty stout, but not really close to the Mitsubishi MMT TX that I currently play. My best swings with the 5 were around 98-100mph, with a nice high ball flight. I had my New Level 623 CB's with me, trying them out and left the Pings at home. The New Level 5 is on a DG 120X, and was getting similar numbers, with a little lower ball flight. The TS3 head felt a little softer, but that's probably due to the graphite shaft. Great combo, might build a combo set with the TS4's or the new TS1's.

I'm sure there are comparable options. The only testing I've been part of was the Autoflex substitute "Otto Phlex"

The CPM.of your setup was right at 300. That's a very solid S flex but not the X flex the other clubs are at you are hitting. Your setup can very easily be made stiffer if needed.

I would like to have a set with that flex for winters, I seem to be swinging a little slower when bundled up, and a little more snap in the shaft would make swinging a little slower still productive.

@Popeye64I need your insight and advise.  I've come to really enjoy hitting the Maltby TSW DRM 56*.  I was considering the getting a Max Milled 52* but questioned the weighting difference.  Seems to match the TSW DRM I would have to reduce the weight in the Max Milled by 7 grams.

a. Would you get the Max Milled stock weight?

b. Get the Max Milled and reduce the weight?

c. Just get the TSW DRM 52*

I'm actually thinking of just getting the TSW DRM 52*  Why introduce all those variables.  I already hit the Kirkland 52* fine and the TSW DRM will be a major upgrade.

Coming from Mizuno Hot Metal 900s with Nippon Modus 105 Stiff

I'm considering a set of TS3s with the Kuro Kage shafts. My irons feel a bit on the heavy side so the less weight might be welcomed.

I hear that if I get these in stiff.. it wll actually be much stiffer than typical stiff. What do I tell GolfWorks when assembling this to avoid this issue? Do I write it in the details when ordering?

Also if I want a different grips than the one they provide by default, how do I request this as well?

Sorry for the amateur questions. New to this.

Also is anyone feels up to answering it, how will these compare to hot metal 900s? I usually shoot mid 90s.

Thanks.

You are best to talk with them on the phone.  Yes, they will change grips in the paks and just charge you the difference.  You can ask them to tip the shafts slightly softer and they will also do that at no additional charge.

...it seems like few companies are offering the combination of forged, one-piece cavity back, players game improvement (although I don't think that's really a category lol) geometry, irons. Miura has the CB301 which might be a good comparable.

I would stay with the DRM. The 52 is even more friendlier than the 56. You will do fine.

Shaft flex is pretty subjective. Nippon is in general a softer flex compared to a TT DG or Project X.

What about nippon 105 s compared to the Kuro Kage black 2nd gen s? Since it's 30g lighter. Maybe ever so slightly stiffer wouldnt be a bad thing?

I cant find the flex stats on this shaft to compare.

Also I'm thinking DRM 52 and 56 with the same shafts also soft tipped. (Never even use my 60).

I understand no one knows my swing but does this set up make sense? I'm just concerned about getting the shafts tipped correctly with what I read about those that don't get it correct with the TS3 heads. I read that their shafts are a 1/4 longer than default length of irons off the rack. Is that true and how does that play into all this soft stepping madness that I'm confused about.

Thank you.

Call Golfworks for technical advice.  They are super nice people.  They have specs for most shafts and can give you a correct answer.  Personally, I have not heard of the Kuro Kage being overly stiff.  A friend just got a set of STI2's with the KK in R flex and he says it feels just like the Project-X R-flex shaft in his Callaways.

The Srixon 7series should be the closest head to the TS3. But you might need to go back to the legendary 745. Though the sole of the Srixon is more of a defined V. But as those heads moved to the ZX7 series the design has morphed a bit. The design still holds true. Lots of weight down low. Generous cavity with amazing feel. Good wider style sole. Overall a super friendly players iron.

I believe someone on here has done a direct comparison of the two. If I remember right the TS3 may have moved them out of the bag.

Srixon might be the closest.

I don't know that there really are a lot of comparable irons out there right now.  It seems like most of the OEM's are using ultra-thin faces and some kind of body welded onto a different kind of face material, etc.  Anything else that are 1-piece forgings are generally aimed at lower handicaps and have the reputation of not being as forgiving (I'm thinking of titleist CB's).  In my opinion, the closest irons to these are more like older Bridgestone irons, such as the J40 DPC or J15 type of irons.  I highly recommend buying a 7 iron TS3 head and seeing for yourself.
