Maltby TS2

Since I've been loving the KE4 TC wood and HyWay, and true to my club hoe ways, I'm thinking about getting an STh2 24° 5 hybrid to see if it will replace the KE4 Max 5 iron in my bag. It would sit between the 21° HyWay and 26° 6 iron.

Since I already have the HyWay for high, soft landing shots, part of me wonders if the 23° KE4 FDI would be better and give me more versatility. Anyone have any opinions on the KE4 FDI, especially when compared to a hybrid of same/similar loft?

I technically have the space in my bag to get both if I wanted, since I top out at a 56° wedge...

The FDI performance will be the opposite of your HyWay. The FDI will be a low flying, boring trajectory. They are great as a fairway finder that will run forever.

They work much like, and are driving irons. There are a select few who can get height from a good strike. The FDI are not all that expensive and can earn a spot in most bags. As long as you realize its limits.

If I struggle to get an identically lofted KE4 Max 5 iron in the air, is it best to skip the FDI then?

The FDI will likely be a bit easier to launch but won't be too much easier to hit. Unless you are only using it off the tee, the HYWAY is likely better. Having a long club that lands soft is really valuable for attacking long par fours and short par fives. That's why I love my heavenwood so much.

If you plan on mainly using it from the fairway then yes the FDI may not work all that well.  It's huuuge compared to the KE4 Max lol.  If the club would mainly be for stinging a shot off the tee then the FDI may fit your bag.  I gamed an FDI briefly and I only hit a handful of good shots off the fairway on some really windy days.  Off the tee was much easier, but it didn't really fit my home course as we have too much elevation change, forced carries and undulating fairways to hit a lot of low runners.  Our course designer definitely wanted the game to be played in the air.

Thank you for the advice guys! Y'all Maltby guys have been instrumental in helping me find clubs that fit me better than what I was using and have made golf so much more enjoyable. So I appreciate you answering my inane questions all the time. With that being said, I ordered a STh2 24° 5 hybrid and I'm looking forward to seeing how it gaps with the 21° HyWay and 26° KE4 Max 6 iron.

I have been wanting to get a new 4 or 5 hybrid.  Could not decide between STh or KE4 Tour TC.  What made you decide the STh?  I got a 13 year old Cleveland DST 5i Hybrid until I can decide which to get.  I really like the way it performs but want something with a little more tech.

Let us (me) know how you like it and compare it's performance to the HyWay.

Those DST hybrids were great clubs. Used a 3 hybrid for a very long time.

Well, it mostly came down to that I'm gapping a 21° HyWay and 26° 6 iron. The KE4 TC comes in 22° or 25°; I figured 22° would be too close to the HyWay and 25° too close to the 6i. The M890 and STh2 both have a 24° model, which is exactly what I wanted. I figure a hybrid will go slightly further than an iron of the same loft, so I'm hoping the 24° hybrid hits right where the 23° 5 iron was.  When comparing the two, the STh2 had specs that I think I will enjoy more: 1° flatter lie and .2" longer face. I've been really enjoying the slightly longer blade length of the KE4 Max irons, so I figured the slightly longer face of the STh2 would "suit my eye" more. Also, I've been really enjoying the sweeping feeling of swinging the HyWay and 5 wood, so I figured the slightly lower lie angle might help in that regard. I almost went with the 23° HyWay to go along with my 21° model, but I figured I'd try out another hybrid before giving up on them entirely.

I have the Scores in a set of Gigagolf C510s and like them a lot. They feel very close to teh FST 115s in my opinion.

Very close to the FST 115. Not too heavy, and not too light. Actually a very impressive shaft. I’ve ordered a number for shaft repairs. Easy to dial in regular/stiff flex.

For those of you gaming a TS-1 set, couple questions.

1) What degree of wedge are you using after the 49.5° GW?

2) How forgiving have you found the lower irons to be? Wondering if I should pick up a TS-2 4,5,6 to blend into the 7,8,etc TS-1

I’m a little old school. I’ve got a bent 53*, and just starting to mess with a 56*. For many times I’ve simply opened the face on the 53.
In my group I’ve noticed many have a gap and 3 wedges and super confused on what to play. IMO you can manufacture a lot of shots with a 53-56*.

Just got off the phone with GolfWorks, they are no longer offering to prorate the Pak price if you buy a test club/head. For those of us who live far from Ohio, that basically removes the only option we have to get a "free" test of the clubs, which is a bummer. I opted to just order one head to try and I guess I will just sell it online if it doesn't work out.

CALLING ALL CANADIANS. Whether your a Maltby player, repairer, or builder I’d like to know how your negotiating the supply and website challenges on the Canadian site. Please DM me and we can solve some problems together.
A fellow a few posts back mentioned the TS3 head was available, but not on the website.
On the Canadian site the KE supply is trailing off, but as of this morning I don’t see the TS3 on the Cnd site. Thanks all Canadians in advance.

That sucks.  What did you order?

If you ordered a 7 iron, you can take it in to GG and use it as a basis to compare other clubs.  Besides, it is much better to hit a club on the course rather then off a mat.

I ordered a DBM 4 iron, because that's really the club I am in need of replacing most in my current set. I don't really need to test it against other clubs, just against my own. The policy change makes it more likely that I'll keep my existing set, though.

That kind of sucks. They really aren't out anything by offering it. Maybe if they get enough push back they will change it. Makes it hard testing out a $650 PAK. I already have 4, 7 irons. I don't need 2 more. Thanks for the report.

My wedge setup past my 48* Sim2 Max AW is Maltby TSW DRM 50* and 56*  Kirkland 60* (Had the full set but wore out the 56* over 2 years from home course with rocky sand traps 😡 ) I use my 56* from 60 yds all the way in.  60* in situations around the green from 20-30 yds in (short sided chipping, over bunker flops, etc.)  I use my 50* from 90 yds in.  and low runners around the green.  My 56* and 52* overlapped too much.  It was redundant.  My 48* I primarily use form my 95-105 yard shot.

I'm not really interested in lobbying them on it, but if they have any awareness of their brand online I'm sure they check this thread occasionally. This feels like a Dick's decision and not a Maltby/GW decision, though, so I doubt there's much they can do.

You sure picked a hard iron to hit to test them out.  As much as I like my KE4 Max irons, the 4 iron sits alone in my bag most of the time.  I assume the specs most closely matched your old clubs.

Loved my KE4 Max irons as well, but same here. 4 iron is a lost cause for me.

Ralph Maltby owned Golfworks until he sold to Golf Galaxy.  For a while, they carried his components.  After Dick's bought GG, I guess that brand did not fit their OEM only policy and they removed it from the stores.  Shame.

In reality, Maltby and Golfworks is an Original Equipment Manufacturer
