You sure picked a hard iron to hit to test them out.  As much as I like my KE4 Max irons, the 4 iron sits alone in my bag most of the time.  I assume the specs most closely matched your old clubs.

It's a trial by fire! I am mostly fine with my current set, but tend to thin my 5 (lofted like the DBM 4) so it's worth seeing if the lower AVCOG is useful. I also considered the TS3 per some folks' recommendations, but the cost difference was a little more than I wanted to deal with. For now I'm going to slap the DBM 4 onto my existing 5i shaft as an initial test and go from there.

Loved my KE4 Max irons as well, but same here. 4 iron is a lost cause for me.

I just went out and played a few holes.  The medium par 3, I usually hit a 5 iron and leave it shortish. Hit the 4i today.  One over the green, two short left and one left me a nice 75 yard lob wedge to 3 feet.  Back in the bag it goes.

Keep in mind, a 4i head is lighter than a 5i and the 5i shaft is 1/2" shorter than a 4i.  The lighter head will make it play stiffer and you will also get a lighter swingweight.  You will need to add 7-8 Gm of tip weight before assembling.

Oh yeah, there will be lead tape involved. I can't find the head weights for my Forged Tec X irons, but I suspect the DBM 4i might weigh the same as the Cobra 5, or close enough.

Thoughts on Dynamic Gold S300 shaft vs the Score LT cut to S flex? I may have an opportunity to pick up a TS3 set, which is basically a TS-1 mated with a KE4 Max from what I understand.

The S300 is 15 grams heavier and lower launching. The Score is a high launch shaft and the DG is a low launch shaft. Very different shafts. IMO, they don't feel that much different but they are on opposite ends of the spectrum for shot characteristics.

The DBM likely has a shorter Bottom of Bore to Ground Measurement than what you're currently playing.  If so, the pulled shaft going into the DBM will result in a shorter final playing length

Yeah that's my assumption as well. I have a couple other shafts I can try out as well if that's an issue.

Do you work for GW Canada?

No. But sometimes I wish I did. I’m a repairer for our local club in Melfort, Sk Canada. Shop garage, and close for winter. Melfort Golf and Country Club. Sometimes folks will head to the US site and spot a club head they like, which is unavailable in Canada on the Canadian site.

My latest build is a  KE4 Tour TC Hybrid #2.
Here’s the story. Other than off a tee, my 3 wood was giving me fits. Many, many tops. I’m waiting for a 5 wood head.
On a lark I assembled a #2 hybrid, with the Maltby regular hybrid shaft. Length a shade longer than a 3 hybrid. It was a little head heavy. I have a few screw weights and dropped it down to a 4 gram weight.
The thing became a rocket. Low flight, boring trajectory, and a ton of roll. It’s a small head but it works. It’s not a head I’d play from the rough due to the shallow face.

If you have a few parts to play around with, and a bit of patience, you may be surprised with the solutions you have.

I've read a few accounts of letting someone hit your Maltby iron, only for the that person to turn around and buy their own Maltby set, and it finally happened to me!

Most of the guys on my team at work play golf and we all went out together about a week back. When the guys found out I had replaced my Callaway irons they were naturally curious what I replaced them with. One of them hit the KE4 Max 9 iron and seemed to really enjoy it. I followed up with him a few days ago and he was looking into getting an STi2 set.

At the same time, I found a TS-3 set from a guy on here that seems to be in really good condition. My coworker bought my KE4 Max and I snagged the TS-3. He's coming from some old Burners with Bubble shafts, so everyone is getting a nice little upgrade here.

Since you had good luck with the KE4 MAX I look forward to your thoughts on the TS3 vs MAX. I was going to get a TS1 IM 7i, but if they won't let you use this towards a future pak I have to wait for a bit. Good luck with the 3's.

I will post my thoughts as soon as I try them out. I will be golfing with my sister (who I'm surprising with a set of M890 irons to replace her cheapo Amazon clubs) on Saturday so I should be able to compare them then.

shallow face.

1.35" face height ~ 34+mm, I would not consider that shallow.  Having demo'd the 2h I would consider sort of a middle of the road face height.  I cannot deal with shallow at all and this head was fine in that regard.  Sort of an odd looking club with the scooped rear of the crown.  It performed well for me!

I was going to post a question here but you may be able to answer as well as anyone else.  I'M FED UP WITH MY DRIVER!  I have a 2021 release TM M4 9.5* with the Atmos 55gm S flex.  Sometimes I hit a great drive that carries 235-240 and rolls to 250-260.  MOST other times it's a push fade or push into the right trees, rough or water that goes 215-225!  A toe hit goes 210-220 but mostly in play.  The driver is my biggest handicap!

I have a Maltby TC Tour 4W at 16* with MPF Pro R flex.  that I've now started just hitting off the tee and I get anywhere from 200 - 225 yards depending on strike and wind but it's straight and in play.  I'm not going to nor can I afford to start going down the "mini driver" rabbit hole for $400-$450.

1.  would a strong lofted 3 wood (13*-14*) or

2. a higher lofted driver (12* STi2) with a 43"-43.5" MPF or Kuro Kage shaft

I have the same issue and moving to a 11.5° driver has helped quite a bit, though my driver swing is a dumpster fire right now.

I have a TC 5 wood at 18° that I can hit nearly as long as a heck of a lot straighter than my driver, so I'm interested in what others have to say.

FOLLOW UP QUESTION:

How would increasing the loft from 9.5* to 11.5* on the Taylor Made adapter affect the club?  Will it open or close the face too much? etc..

Lofting up should close the face which could help with the push and push fade.  I usually set the latest drivers to +2 just to get the face more square.  Some of the recent drivers I had were several degrees open in the +2 position and waaay too open in the -2 position.  In the old TM driver days I always found Neutral Upright perfect.  I miss buying hand selected stuff from Wishon.

I'm going to try to loft up +2* and see what happens otherwise looking for alternative.

I don’t know the Maltby drivers as well as the irons. I bought one about 6-7 years ago and it was so loud I hit 5 balls with it and couldn’t take it. Don’t remember the model, but it was noisy. I am sure they are better since then. I love my TS1-IM/TS4 irons.

But I did go through a phase where the rightward shots were an issue and nothing came close to working like a Ping SFT head. The G400 SFT 10 degree is what I played (they also come in 12 degree) and there are enough used ones around in stores that you can at least try one. They don’t look shut at address and the heads really work. Loft change you are making is a good idea but the SFT is one cheap alternative if you want to explore another head.

Have you tried an R flex in the driver?  That may fix the right/fade.  Your distance seems like a swing speed more in the R flex area.  I like your idea of a higher lofted driver but maybe not that short of a shaft.

S flex.  I have R flex in my MPF shafts (4W & 21* HyWay).  I sold my Sim2 Max with the same problem but it had a Hzrds Black 65gm S flex.  Guy at PGASS said it was the weight of the shaft and not the flex so I got the M4 with the Atmos 55 gm S flex.  I hit about 5-6 different drivers.

That's why I'm sooooo frustrated.  My 4W goes straight, Hyway goes straight, Cleveland Hywood with cypher S flex (they run like R flex) goes straight.  I keep thinking it's my swing but I really don't think so otherwise my 4W off the tee would push fade also if it was solely the swing

In the simulator I was getting 132-140 mph ball speeds with the S shaft.

Option 2 would be where I’d go. Even at 44” you’d have better center face contact then your TM stock setup.

I am still seeing that your problems occur in the S flex shafts from your description.  Your ball speed indicates about a 95 MPH swing speed.  You might want to go somewhere like Golf Galaxy and hit some R flex drivers and see if it helps the fade/push.

Driver is, IMO, the hardest club to hit. Lessons and range time are the real key. I've gone from hitting a 220 yard heel slice to 280 yard carry bullets.

For me, <60 g and stiff = slice or push fade

>60 pushing 70 and R to R+ helps significantly.
