I bought a TS4 7 in BST a couple weeks ago. Finally had it in the bag today. Hit it 3 times, all really good shots, surprisingly.

Those DBM’s are looking really good!

What do you normally play in irons to compare to the TS4? The DBM TS4 have my eye but not sure my iron game is up for it!

I have the 0311T as well. Did you try any other maltby irons prior to settling on the ts4?

Yep, TS1, TS1IM, and I play a combo set of TS3 4/5 TS4 6-9.  The TS1 IM are a little longer than the TS4, but I do not like the look as much.  The TS3 long irons are great because they launch a smidge higher.  TS1 had too much offset on them.

The simplified version of the explanation given back in the day...

The butt section is the stiffest part of the shaft.  The shorter BBGM means that more of the butt section will remain, compared to an otherwise identical install with a longer BBGM.  More of that stiffer butt section remaining means it will play stiffer.

Ok. But how/why does someone do this for example. he said he built them 1/2” longer to account for the short bbgm? What am I not understanding here?

Shorter bbgm means a pull from another club will play under length.  On these clubs it's about 1/2". So he must have pulled the shafts from another wedge and installed a 1/2" extension to bring it back to standard length.

It's a combination of both: bore depth is 1.355", which is as deep as anything I've ever worked on.  Typical is 1.125" or even 1.250".  It doesn't seem like much, but when you combine the short BBTG (again, typical with irons I've worked on is more like 1.250") with another 1/4" deeper bore depth, it adds up to needing about an inch longer shaft than many other sets out there.  Keep in mind, there is no industry standard on any of these measurements, so this is just a reminder to do your homework before you buy a set of shaft pulls.

This might be WHY I’ve hated my ts3’s. I’ve used pulls on all 3 shafts I’ve tried.

Update on the TE+ and DRT build. All around this set might be my favorite to date. Profile, turf interaction, and playability are very similar to the TS4, but forgiveness is just as good as the TS3 IMO. Feel is right in between the 2 which is absolutely perfect for me. They feel very soft but feedback is exceptional. I think I might actually prefer the feel of these over the TS3 as it's not quite as muted due to being just a slightly slimmer profile, but actually feel more powerful off the face.

I actually had the lofts adjusted 2° weaker due to being a little too hot for my wedge gapping. Every club was nearly a whole club longer than the TS3 for some strange reason. Maybe I'm just hitting these better? 🤷‍♂️. So yeah I went a little old school on the lofts but still getting 135 yds from the PW with a comfortable 10-12 yd gap between clubs. I'm very happy with the outcome!

Also, I decided to spruce things up a little bit with some matching paint fill..

Some have suggested to put an 8 iron shaft into a 9 iron to compensate for it.  I asked Golfworks about this and they said not to bother. They acknowledged the difference but noted that it would be so small that no one would notice.

Forgive me if someone already posted this. I received a hard copy catalog this week that included the to be released TS3.5.

The TS4s are a little lower launching than other irons I’ve played. I’m also hoping to switch out the PX LZ shafts with graphite - Recoil 95s.

That is correct.  I pulled them from Mack Daddy 4 wedges and they needed extensions.

I have hit just about everything. From Mizuno MP14 to Callaway X-14. I always tend to go back to SGI irons, especially after a couple bad rounds. Currently in the bag are Titleist 714 AP1 irons with XP 95 shafts.

I think the thinner soles are helping with my strike. I’m really working on low point with my Pro, I tend to thin more shots than hitting it fat. With the TS4, the ball seems to be launching higher, easier. I really don’t know why. The AP1’s have a pretty low COG. My guess is it’s easier for me to get better interaction with the ground. I hit 2 super thin 6 iron shots yesterday that cost me. I hit a thinnish shot with TS4 7 iron, and it launched easier and went almost the distance I expected.

I’m thinking about 7-GW. Not sure about the 6 iron. I just added old steel shafted Cobra Baffler hybrids for the 5 and 4 iron spots.

I had a set of the old MMB-17 Black irons in the past. These TS4 irons seem easier to get better strikes. Not sure why. Maybe the different sole?

I play the Recoil Dart 90s in them.  I love it.  I used to play Recoil 95's in my Cobra irons. But the 95's swingweight about 1.5 swingweight points more than the Dart 90s and I play my irons overlength.  So getting the swingweight down was nice.

So it's not testers or any kind of enamel based paint. It's actually acrylic. I find acrylic is much easier to deal with and it holds up pretty well once completely cured. Also, there seems to be a bigger variety of colors available.

Beyond just the width of the sole, maybe the grind details and "effective bounce" are ideal for you.   The TS4's definitely have more effective bounce than the MMB-17.

From the description of the TS4's....."The sole is CNC milled to provide precise sole angle and radius specifications throughout the set.  The TS4 features a modern tour leading edge grind and 4 way radius sole as well as graduated sole angles (bounce) to provide optimal turf interaction."

just bought a 12 pack of assorted colors on amazon and the small bottles. do you just leave the paint in the dispenser bottle and no issues with it drying up in there..I usually use nail polish (wife always asks whey I am buying nail polish on amazon) but I have to use little bits of it drawn into a syringe with needle and then used and the rest int he syringe is discarded as it dries so quickly. Good for paintfilling, bad for keeping anything not in the original bottle. This looks like it might keep in those smaller bottles and not dry up?

If anyone has the new Maltby pro series shaft can you post a pic of the shaft in the 180 orientation to the logo, eg if you put the logo down in your build is the backside clean black or does the logo wrap around. Thanks in advance.

Have not installed mine yet but here are pics of from and 180 back.

Yes looks wise the TS4 remind me of a updated version of the MMB

I thought I could never play them but got a deal on a short set so I gave them a try.  Instinctively I changed my swing thinking they would be hard to hit.  My first range session was awful but after that I just swung as I did with my KE4s and they were money.  I’m going to shaft up those TS1-IMs this week since I am trying for a little lower trajectory.

I want more bounce than what my TS2 short irons have.  Please ignore GW’s published bounce specs, I don’t find them to be very useful.

I have a TS1-M, it has decent bounce but is a little thin.

I have a TS3, and it has about what I want.

If anyone knows, how do the TE+ and STi2 compare to the TS3?  And, I should go on the Maltby forum and ask if the TS3.5 is the same sole as the TS3.

Here's what I've gone to now: I'm on at least the 4th set of shafts with my TS3's, trying to get the right weight, and I look for pulls that I can soft-step 2x to get the length right and drop the flex a bit.  Here's my current theory... I just installed some Nippon 950gh shafts that after soft-stepping 2x, play 1/4" long, which is great for a little extra swing weight.  Everyone says that the 950's play a little soft to flex, BUT everyone on here says that shafts feel a little stiffer in the TS line due to extra butt length, although soft-stepping twice should make them more like a SR flex that Nippon also uses.  Hopefully it all evens out to play an R+, which is what I really wanted in the first place 🙂
