So with the Xcaliber Rapid Tapers all but dead... I need to find a new go to shaft. My personal supply of Rapid Tapers will only last so long.

I've hit a few MMT shaftd and have been intrigued.  The 105 felt like a ton, so I leaned to the 90g range. Also grabbed an 80g. Both in the Stiff flex.

I used the TS4 heads as I wanted a relatively difficult head to hit, letting the shafts shine through and not a Ultra Game improvement head.

I built a DBM TS4 with the 90g shaft and a Chrome TS4 with the 80g shaft.  With out any range swings i took them straight to the course. Im leaning to the 90g as that more of my go to weight range, so that saw the most work.

The first shot was an uphill 145 playing near 160. Hit it pin high and it made it look easy. Dropped another ball and near identical shot. 3' apart from the first. I did this all over the course, anywhere a 7 iron would work. Distance control was intuitive. I was very surprised at how straight they flew. Point and shoot type of performance.  It wasn't till the last hole that I brought out the 80g. What i quickly found out that the 80g had more kick to it. It flew nearly identically to the 90g... but it spun harder.

Had no idea the Rapid tapers were on the way out. Is that all Excals?
I’ve always taken the 950 GH route with my Maltby sets. I’ll check out MMT. Very pricey for my blood.

I was really surprised how good the TS4/90 combo was. What clubs are you carrying, 5-GW?

Yeah, 5-GW. I’m sold on them.

I have the MMT 105 S in my 2021 P790 and I don’t think I’ll have another shaft. Absolutely love them.

I have been hitting the 90g and 70g Maxfli XC2 in store and love them.  They don’t offer the 105 which has been my hold up from pulling the trigger.  That said, the numbers I’ve gotten from the 70g are so good I’ve almost considered them.   I have just never played that light of a shaft and it kind of scares me.

We have pre conceived notions that lighter shafts just won't work for us. In fact so many golfers are convinced they could never play a graphite iron shaft. Never mind a lite weight one.

My thing is I have to see it outdoors. In the Sims is one thing but until i see turf flying and how the ball looks in the air, I can't pull the trigger.

Wedge VCOG needs to be HIGH.  The long hosel is a big part of getting it up there.  You good players would not like a short hosel wedge, IMO.  Balloon balls.

Yes it does. A long hosel is just an incredibly stupid design solution for high VCOG. Seems pretty straightforward to shorten the hosel and relocate that mass to the high toe area where it is useful to raise the VCOG and face center the horizontal CG.

Preach!

Long hosels irrationally give me the fear of shanks

Not at all.  Remember how popular the Ping Eye wedges were, even among some stronger players.  I've tested short hosel sand wedges from higher MPF rated iron sets that had them, and they are great in terms of impact points across the face and toe side....and ball flight.  There's a couple good ones on the Bay right now, if anyone wants to do some experimenting.

Keep in mind that Actual Vertical COG is progressive up and down a set, because face height becomes gradually taller as the lofts increase....and shallower as loft decreases.  You need don't need a long hosel to locate the AVCOG to a beneficial place in a wedge

Has anyone actually tried the KE4 TC Pro IST 6 hybrid?

I have one, just received it a couple weeks ago with the new Malby Pro series shaft in senior flex.   I was having in consistent contact with my 6 iron at the same loft.   The hybrid launches higher for me, which is what I was looking for.

I built a KE4 TC Pro ICT 7 wood, with the MPF + fairway shaft.   I didn't quite get along with the shaft, so I reshafted to one that I'm used to.  The head is quite nice.  I don't have any crazy stories to tell, just that it is a good head, it works as expected.  🙂

I didn't remove the ring from the adapter before I pulled the adapter for the reshaft.  I used the least heat I could get away with, and the ring didn't discolor, but in the future I would try to remove it.  Has anyone done that, like you do on Callaway adapters?

If I were to order another of the same pak, I would go down a flex on the shaft.  I'm sure it's softer than the old ones, but still a little on the stiff side for my personal preferences.  I tend to like softer shafts.

Not so much a Maltby question, rather, a shaft question.  When does one seriously consider moving from a stiff flex driver shaft to a Regular flex shaft?  What would be a sign that the shaft You've been accustomed to you've aged out of?

In my experience, when it begins to feel like work to square the face and you have to be swinging very well to get quality shots then it's time to go lighter or softer (or both). Another way of saying it is a good fitting shaft will still produce reasonable results on less than wonderful swings. Once those poorer swings are starting to give really bad results then time to move on.

Your answer hits the nail on the head.  From last year I was hitting driver really good.  This year over the past several months I've been slicing, pushing, push-slice no matter what I do.  Feels like I lost a little distance as well.  I feel my swing hasn't changed.  I have MMT 70-R on my irons.  My hybrids have R flex as well but I was hitting my driver so well last year (55gram S ) that I thought the flex was fine but I started to question it this year.

All, trying to decide between a DRT wedge and the MAX Milled wide sole.

When would you select a wide sole (MAX) versus going with the higher bounce (DRT)?

And, would you go 56 or 58 degree?

My particular situation is I have a 53* gap wedge from my set, so this will be the highest lofted club in the bag.

I have a shallow swing and pretty much just "brush the grass" when pitching and chipping.

I expect to use this mostly from firm greenside sand and when I am short-sided.

My sand play is mediocre at best.

Thanks for your thoughts!

wide sole max is the easiest sand club i've used, well  very close to the easiest. the DRT didn't really suit me either and i'm a picker/brusher like you.

I have the 58 degree wide sole Max Milled wedge and it is the best sand club I have ever owned.  I no longer fear that I am going to leave it in the sand.  Not the best choice for tight lies though.

5* would generally be a better wedge gap than just 3*.  Also most are better having some more loft than just 56* for the highest loft wedge.  58* would be my pick

I have the 58* 1.05 wide sole and 54* .90 wide sole.  Agreed about the 58* out of the sand.  On tighter lies you have to be a little more steep and will be serviceable.  Anything from a tighter lie I go to my 54* and it works fine on tighter lies.

I's also go 58°.

But you might want less bounce if you always play firm sand.

I have the same setup.  I have been using the 54* around the greens for most approaches with good results.  No need to use the 58* unless short sided.

Have the TE+ forged now and they are really good. Plenty of people think ts3 is the more forgiving option. I was dead set on ordering them but just saw the TE+ forged actually has a higher MOI. Any idea why this would be? For the people that have had and played with both extensively, I’d imagine ts3 is more forgiving regardless of what that number shows

I much prefer the te+ over the ts3. And for that matter, the ts4 is better for me than the ts3. I had combod the te+ and ts4 and in the end went full ts4 5-AW

I found the ts3 to be very similar on dispersion, but slightly more left biased than the te+.  I have the ts4 though now in 6-9 and a ts3 in my 5 iron.  I usually hit dozens of balls on multiple days club by club when testing.
