Has anyone had fitment issues with .355" in Maltby heads?

I pulled my a Modus 120 out of my ZXI5 set to try with my TS4 6 iron. The Modus is .355". Maltby says the bore is universal but the shaft fits incredibly loose. I used glass shafting beads but im not confident in the fitment at all. Seems like a shim is needed, but doesnt that defeat the purpose of having a "universal" bore?

I have .355 C-Tapers in my TS1-IM/TS4 combo set and didn't have any issues with them seating properly with some shafting beads.

I just glued it up with some quickset. It's drying so I'll find out soon.

Wondering if there was some dried epoxy at the bottom of the bore perhaps preventing me from seating the shaft properly. I should have gave it a good scrape but kind of late now.

Sure wish the new utility irons were available now.  The pak version looks pretty great for $80.  I'm in the market for a driving iron again and the prices for name brand clubs are pretty up there.  Even used beat up driving irons are $180.

In my limited experience I've had to shim all of my .355 shafts in the Maltby heads (TS1-IM, TS4, DRT Wedges).  Granted, the shafts I used they've been reused multiple times so I'm sure the repeated sanding of the tip probably reduced the size some.  Possibly same issue you had since you reused a shaft.

Mine were brand new, but I could see where some epoxy could get stick in that bottom 1/8" and cause them to not sit down completely.

Yea that checks out. If the 6 iron passes the new head to head test against the Srixon today I'll order some shims along with the rest of the heads.

Playing partners are going to lose it if I show up with more new clubs this season 😂

The Universal hosel fits a .355” shaft only in the last 1/8”. If the heads were used, you really need to take care of cleaning that last 1/8” step out, and when dry fitting, make sure they can get seated properly. You really need to slam the shaft in to get it seated fully. I turn the club upside down and slam the butt on my concrete floor.

I always use shims on .355” shafts in Malby heads, so I don’t have to worry about that.

I had an iCrossover 2 iron a few years ago and really liked it.  I sold it when I needed cash for a new baby and buying a house - been looking at getting another - taking a look around at other options that might fit the budget a bit better now.

Super important to clean out the hosel for the .355 to sit down in the well of the universal hosel.

The IST unfortunately is just not the right profile for me.  Not only is it larger than I prefer, I’m just not comfortable hitting “down” on it like I do the Adams.  I think if I were more of a sweeper or played it more like a fairway wood it would be great.  When I flush it, it’s great.  But on 10 hits I’m flushing it at most 5 times.  With the Adams 8.  The Adams just feels like an extension of an iron so I can play it just like one.

A shaft change isn’t going to change that.

Have you tried the FDI heads. No wonder you don't like the IST after playing that Adams.

this.  Mine is bent to 25 and contact/ball flight is very consistent.

I wish they/others would make the DI style through a 6i up to or capable of being bent.to 29-30*.  And not the goo filled hot faced irons, an actual driving iron style.  I think Srixon had one that was a 6i/29* ...  The FDI is so good, might try and find another that is weak by 1*, and see if I can get someone to bend 27* ... I know, "it won't sell" ... But I can dream🙃

Managed to swing into the only local shop that had a mizuno shaft optimizer today. I know it's not the end all be all, but since finding a local fitter in my area to test maltby's is nearly impossible I figured I could use this as a starting point. I really have no idea what the shaft optimizer numbers mean, and since I didn't want to pay for a full fitting they sent the teenager back there to run it and he didn't know either lol.

Has anyone tried these shafts in the TS4s? If so how did the numbers look? I currently game KBS Tour X circa 2010 or so and I've played PX 6.5, but no experience with x100s or C tapers.

I'm a little worried that the bottom end of the bag might not spin enough with something like a C taper. I'm a pretty high ball hitter, but I want to make sure the 4 and 5 irons are still launching high enough. I'm wondering if I could combo the TE+ in those irons.

$Taper and Dynamic gold are almost as good of a fit and they both have more feel than the C Taper. I hit all in a fitting recently. DG was easiest to launch and felt "softest" of the 3, then $ Taper, then C Taper. I also would have had the same fear trying to play C Tapers. $ Tapers have been great.

I play TE+ in 4&5 irons, and I'm switching them to TS4's, as they are nearly identical in look at address and performance.

At one point, Mizuno had an app you could download to interpret the numbers and see recommendations.

edit: just looked, don’t see anything.
