A friend of mine just got "fit" for some Ping i525 irons. "Fit", meaning he told the Ping guy that came to our course what head he wanted and what shaft he wanted to play. 🤔

He's a guy that takes it back MAYBE to his waist in his backswing, and puts a lot of torque on his shaft. But he seldom takes a divot and has a low ball flight. He's coming from Mizuno 923 JPX Hot Metal Pro irons, with an AVCOG @ .764, Ping i525 AVCOG @ .911. The Ping's are in his shed, until he work them out over the winter...

I think he needs a set of TS3's!

I hope he doesn't fight them and force himself to play the set,...but he probably will since the investment was made.  Most people still have no clue about different sweet-spot heights on iron designs and how it can make or break the fit

I hit my (loft-jacked) 6i 185 with decent height but have a hard time getting the 21° 5i off the ground when hitting from the fairway.

21° Maltby HyWay, 'nuff said. It has been an absolute game changer for me.

Maybe these are too different to compare, but how would the TS1 compare to the KE4 Max? I have the opportunity to pick up a 5-GW set of TS1 with some shafts that I think I can flip as a set of pulls which will make the heads sub-$100 for the set. I know they're gonna be way above my skill level as a high handicapper, but I'm thinking they would be fun to have around as something to hit on the range and maybe someday grow into.

Go for it. Quality shaft pulls sell quickly. Have fun with the TS1s.

For some reason (likely my screwed up head) the HyWay has not been performing as well as it did.  I've been topping, thinning and chunking it.  That being said I have come to LOVE my Malty KE4 Tour TC 4W!  I have finally figured this club out and smashing it off the fairway! (Maybe I shouldn't have said that LOL 🤦‍♂️).  I'll work it out with the HyWay, I'm sure...

Here's the kicker...  I've had a mental problem with my 5i so I went to a local shop that has a larger selection of used clubs.   Picked up a Cleveland DST 5i Hybrid for $39.  From the first time I used it, it has been great.  Can't hit a bad shot with it.  Carries 160-170 no problem.  The 21* HyWay carries 175-180 for me.  Cleveland HyWood 3+ carries 185-200.  Maltby 4W carries 195-220 depending upon lie and strike.  My top end is set.  Now if I could only hit my driver......... Maltby TSW DRM wedges are GREAT wedges.  I do want to try the Max Milled and the KE4 Tour TC hybrids.

Maltby makes super high quality clubs.....

My take on the HYWAY. My eye could not get past what the HYWAY wanted to be. It's kind of chunky in that it has a taller face. Yet its still relatively long. It's most definitely a cross between a hybrid and fairway. That part they nailed. Even though it worked well I just couldn't embrace the head.

A couple of years ago I built my son a shorter 3 wood, cheap burner knock off from Monarch, when he was in junior high and hadn't hit his growth spurt yet. Earlier this year I was struggling during a round and grabbed that out of his bag and it just agreed with me. After the first hit I was honestly surprised. He didn't like it, but I hit it well. Straight and the distance I needed.

As much as I hate the cliche of "suits the eye" it really does come into play here. For some reason, the taller face of the HyWay gives me a ton of confidence and I'm hitting it way better than the KE4 TC 4 wood. @wantacigar they come from Golfworks at a 7 wood length, maybe you could try choking up on it to a 4 hybrid length (~1.5"?) and see if that suits you better. But then it is probably redundant with the 5 hybrid you're loving.

It's probably cause my miss is to hit it fat at the moment, so that taller face is more forgiving than the 4 wood.

Choking down is probably the answer.  I also tend to try to hit it harder and throw everything off.

Speaking of Maltby shafts, had an interesting conversation with Isaac over there when I picked up my TS1-IM 7 iron earlier in the week. Mentioned to him that I might try a "poor man's" autoflex build with their new KE4 Max driver head. And was planning to do the MPF UL shaft.

He went on to tell me that they profiled an Autoflex shaft, and it was identical to their M890 shaft. Like virtually indistinguishable. So I may have a new frontrunner for this fun little build. Only "downside" is the weight is in the more traditional range of driver shafts. And part of the recommendation from folks who've tried the DIY autoflex is that you go down in weight by 15-20 grams. Will likely just pick up both the MPF UL and M890. Given they're each under $30.

@SE Gamer did you get a chance to build and test the poor man's autoflex?

Why would they be discontinued this fast? I just bought a TS1-IM 7 iron that hopefully I get to test soon. Definitely passes the eye test but I need to see how it performs head to head with my i230.

I put the TS1-IM against the i230s on a sim last night and the numbers were so close I don’t see a switch in my future. I was very impressed with the TS1-IM though. I’ll do a little more testing on the course to confirm if the results on the sim are the same.

Just want to chime in and say this thread has been my favorite place on the internet for the last week or so as I’ve caught up.

I’m a 9hcp who started playing in May of 2020. I’m 6’4” and in reasonably good shape, I think I swing my driver 100-105 mph. I am super fortunate and get to walk 54-72 holes every week in Southern Oregon.

I currently game 60-56-52 Vokey wedges and G-5i Cobra Forged Tec X bent 3° up with KBS PGI 85 shafts at +.5”. I tend to dig with my short irons and sweep with the longer ones. I hit my (loft-jacked) 6i 185 with decent height but have a hard time getting the 21° 5i off the ground when hitting from the fairway. I also struggle with fliers and large or overlapping gapping between clubs.

As I’ve improved my miss has moved from fat to thin, and because the C-dim on all these clubs is low I tend to flirt with the shanks constantly. @CWebb gave me some advice on another thread for fitting tall golfers, which was much appreciated. I’m looking at the DBMs because they look incredible and seem to favor a sweep, knowing that I’ll be giving up some length on my nominal club names (Cobra 7i will be like a DBM 5i or so).

Looking at ordering the 4i and GW to test first with the graphite shaft Pak, with both clubs 2° upright, 1° strong, and uncut shafts so I can explore some different length options. ***edit to add I plan to kick out the 52° Vokey for the DBM GW. So the new set would be P, 60, 56, G-4i, 5w, 3w, D.

I’d like to get something that looks good, fits my game right now, and will grow with me as I try to push my cap even lower. What do the experts think of this plan?

as a 6’4” person as well, I am curious to hear this advice myself! Do you think you could link it here?

Remember to test them from different lies, especially tight lies.

I wanted it to be a real 7w in the same design as the Tour TC woods and it just isn’t. Have moved on from Maltby woods as a result.

Appreciate all the help members have already given. Looking for more info. I play mizuno tzoid pro with mizuno turbo gold stiff shafts. 7 iron 160 yards. I got a launch monitor early this year and started working on launch angel and angle of attack. So now my launch angles are right in line with trackman average numbers but my ball height is really low. Usually half of the average so about 45 feet. So could this from the shaft the avcog or just technique. For reference I am looking at getting ke4 max pak with score shafts. Thanks everyone.

That is where you would see the potential benefit from AVCOG, right?

Depends on the player and what the AVCOG comparison is,...but in general an AVCOG below .800" is going to be easier to hit from normal to tight lies vs something near .900", such as in this example.

Not just tight lies, but good fairway lies as well.  Obviously when we elevate a ball up on a tee it changes things, in terms of ability to get the AVCOG beneath the center of the ball

Trackman averages for who?

Are you producing the same speed as these tour players?  That's really the only way you can compare peak height.

Otherwise at a lower speed, you'll need to launch it higher and possibly with more spin as well

7 iron is usually about 84 I think. 6 iron is 88.

Do you know that you're striking that iron solidly?  If yes, then it sounds like you need to increase your spin.

Think about ball type first.   Try a higher spin ball.  Then in head design you can think about a lower AVCOG (sweet-spot)....as well as making sure you're not in design with too low of loft, compared to what you're already playing and struggling with in terms of peak height.  The 30* 7 iron in the KE4 Max is probably not the best idea

@Mako J what is the difference between these two for you? How are they with feel, forgiveness, sound, etc compared to big name drivers?

I’ve been gaming the tour for a couple of years now and still love it. Recently put a softer heavier low low shaft in it and it’s been fun. Bombs. The feel to me is outstanding and competes with anything out there. The sound is good too considering most are comparing to composite crowns. I haven’t had it on a Sim in a while but Popeye already posted a lot of that earlier in the thread. It competes in speed and forgiveness.

My on course shoot outs were Ping 425 Lst, TM Sim2, and Titleist Ts2(I believe). Not perfect shaft comps but close enough. None of them caused me to question my Maltby. Similar performance but significantly higher price tags. I’ve used the savings on shaft ho’ing.

I only hit the Max on the Sim at Maltby HQ. Feel and sound were fine and performance was similar. I just prefer looking down at the slightly smaller head of the tour. Looking forward to seeing the new Pro.

Couple questions on the TS3:

1) What is the design benefit of a progressive cavity, with more weight towards the toe in the long irons and centered in the short irons?

2) I would like to add some weight to the club heads, after shortening the shafts. Where should I place the lead tape? Just keep it evenly across the back and as low as possible?

I think the idea is that the longer irons are harder to hit, so a little lower and longer COG creates a slightly easier to hit head design.  With the shorter irons not having quite as low of an AVCOG to help control shot height.  They're still forgiving on the toe side of center, so no concern there.

Correct on the lead tape, even and low.  If it's slightly off, don't worry about it, because it's a very small percentage of weight.  Not enough to move the COG
