Does anyone have any experience with the Maltby mpf pro series graphite iron shafts?

I made the switch to axiom 105S in my last iron set & currently love them. But I have the bug to build a new set & can’t stomach the price to do it all over again.

At that time I dropped down from 120G stiff steel shafts to the 105g stiff axioms & didn’t miss a beat. I’m well aware the MPFs won’t be Axioms but with the $100 savings per shaft I’m willing to experiment. My only concern is the weight difference. Im thinking of soft stepping the X flex to get it as close as possible but would that be too much of a drop?

Idk my swing speed #s but I carry 8 iron 165ish with the axioms now. I’ve put a lot of time into my iron game in the last 1.5 years & the switch into graphite with the axioms has really helped.

Ultimately I would pair them into the TS4 DBM heads & have the cool blacked out look. Seeing as they were just released for pre order today any input would be appreciated!

I think @AZstu324 has some experience with the new black mpf pro series + shafts.

Just ordered the TS3 in 4/5 and TS4 6-9 in Black DBM! Gonna build em up in some X100s. Any recommendations on what color ferrules/grips? Currently have Tiffany blue ferrules BBF

also leave 3/8” of an inch for the short hosel correct?

if you really wanna get jiggy wit it, go with the Star Sidewinder in this color 😁

As for the build, I'd trim and sand the tips first and just tape them into hosel so they don't slide. Then measure out your cut length which is usually .25" shorter than play length to account for the butt cap on the grip.

I'm back trying to figure out my irons. In the last 2 years I’ve tried no less than 8 sets of irons. Ts2, , 699 pros, Ts3 (never got along with them, tried 2 diff shafts), i210, i230, new level 902 os, i530, g430.

on a whim I ordered a set of srixon zx4 mk 2 earlier this week.

fast forward to earlier this week and I’m messing around with a set of Wishon 560mc that I built about 15 years ago. They just flat out work great. Love the huge club face and almost zero offset. My misses are smaller, but the distances are a full 2 clubs short from modern sets. And now I’m looking at other maltby offerings that most resemble the 560mc.

I'm so tired of ho-ing irons. Want to find a set I can stick with. Current handicap is 8.4, driver ss 107-112.

thoughts? Te+ look good. But I just don’t know.

I had both the 560mc and the precursor 555.   I also played the 575MMC.   IMO--- the Maltby ts-3 would be the choice in that area.   Good luck..

I actually tried the ts3, 3 diff shafts I tried. Hated them. Was so excited to play them but I've tried to no avail.

Why yes I do! @Southside Seminole it sounds like we're about in the same boat distance wise. I opted for the XS and couldn't be happier! I played the OG S flex and they were great. The new X flex is definitely stiffer, but in no way a telephone pole. The more I swing them, the more I'm convinced I made the perfect choice. With the lighter weight, it kind of counters the stiffness in a good way and they are just so insanely stable and accurate. You have my vote to give them a go!

That’s exactly what I was hoping to hear. I also play the axiom 105s in my wedges. Have you thrown them into a wedge?

i really liked my 560mc and still have a set of heads. For me I have really liked the Ts-4...as a shallow AOA and sweeper, I also thought the ts-3 would be better since it has a lower VCOG...but like you I didn't like it at all...maybe the fact that the sole was too thick for me. Love the Ts-4. Nothing hard to hit about it despite it being a "blade". I would look into that...With regard to the TS1-m I prefer the softer more solid feel of the non hollow body head. my 2 cents.

I didn't go that route in the wedges. I opted for the FST Pro 115's cut to XS 8i tip and am very happy with the results. I just need a little more heft in the wedges.

Sounds good! I actually found a set of PTM heads that someone is sending me. If those don’t workout then I’ll try a demo of the ts4 and te+

yeah PTM have the best feel by far...I have both the chrome and black versions. But I still prefer the sole interaction of the ts-4 as its just thinner..but the feel of the chrome ptm is unmatched in almost any iron I have every hit.

Question for you all.

I’ve seen this mentioned a few times but never really understood the reasoning behind it. I’ll preface this by saying that I’ve built 4 sets of maltby irons and 20+ other sets so I’m no spring chicken.

in regards to the shorter hosels, and tip trimming shafts. Does anything need to be done that wouldn’t be done in a “normal” hosel? I’ve not accounted for this at all previously and now feel like I messed up.

FYI it is not the shorter hosel that needs accounting for it is the shorter BBGM that comes into play and less of the butt section that is being trimmed as a result.  These two things (BBGM and insertion/hosel depth) often get confused as the same thing, they are not.  BBGM is especially important to know when using pulls to determine  the finished  clublength!

Hopefully one of the old schoolers will chime in and explain this in more detail/understandable terms🙃

The simplified version of the explanation given back in the day...

The butt section is the stiffest part of the shaft.  The shorter BBGM means that more of the butt section will remain, compared to an otherwise identical install with a longer BBGM.  More of that stiffer butt section remaining means it will play stiffer.

Well, since they have dropped the paks for the DBM TS4, I am assuming they will hit the custom shop soon.  One of the shafts I was planning to use for the build (TT DG 115 Mid x100 .355) is out of stock in the 5 iron.  If I have them cut down a 4i of it, that would be soft stepping it one flex right?  Could I throw a regular DG x100 .370 in there in X-flex and achieve almost the same weight? I have the 5 iron coming in at 117g by a rough estimate. I am really new to most of this, and I was fit for the DG Mids. Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: Or I could just throw the x100 .370 in there for all the irons and save a solid 50 bucks.

Update on the TE+ and DRT build. All around this set might be my favorite to date. Profile, turf interaction, and playability are very similar to the TS4, but forgiveness is just as good as the TS3 IMO. Feel is right in between the 2 which is absolutely perfect for me. They feel very soft but feedback is exceptional. I think I might actually prefer the feel of these over the TS3 as it's not quite as muted due to being just a slightly slimmer profile, but actually feel more powerful off the face.

I actually had the lofts adjusted 2° weaker due to being a little too hot for my wedge gapping. Every club was nearly a whole club longer than the TS3 for some strange reason. Maybe I'm just hitting these better? 🤷‍♂️. So yeah I went a little old school on the lofts but still getting 135 yds from the PW with a comfortable 10-12 yd gap between clubs. I'm very happy with the outcome!

Also, I decided to spruce things up a little bit with some matching paint fill..

Okay, these are Hot AF!!  What paint did you use for the Fill?  I might get some neon green to match the Lamkin grips I am going to use on my set.

Just some good multi surface dishwasher safe acrylic, and a fine point squeeze bottle. You can get them both at any craft store.

Fill in the areas and let sit for about 2 minutes, then just lightly wipe off most of the excess with a folded lightly damp paper towel. Don't go crazy wiping yet because you could pull out some of the paint. Let sit for about another hour and then do the same but with a little more water added to the towel and switch back and forth between the wet and dry part of the towel. Most of the excess should be gone. If there are any small bits of paint remaining, you can just repeat the last step until they're gone.

If I have a set of shafts that I like and am going to pull the shafts, before I do I measure the distance from the ground to first step or shaft graphic.  When inserting into new heads, I try to match up those distances.  Sometimes it may need a soft step or hard step or a little tip trimming.   Nowadays, all heads seem to have different BBGMs.  Is it overkill, perhaps, just more for peace of mind.

Ordered a DRT DBM 54* all purpose and a Maltby IST 3H to fill space in the bag since I wont be carrying a 4i anymore on the 16th.
