Chippers - time for you to fess up and tell the truth.

Let’s face it.... most of us are hacks and need all the help we can get. I usually shoot in the low 80s on most courses. The other day I was golfing with a friend and he pulled out s Cleveland 3s chipper.

I tried it on multiple shots from 75 yards andvin and the thing was incredible. I am currently shopping them on eBay and will prob have one in the bag in a week or two.

The weight and feel of the club is awesome and it it almost impossible to hit. Bump and run shots are too easy as well.

Tell us about your chipper!

One of the guys I play with at my dads club has a chipper. I tried it a few times but couldn't get used to the huge sole on the club. Chipping and pitching has never been my strong suite but have been doing fairly well as of late. Really started to shine when I began using my mid irons around the green for chips. Takes a while to get used to the rollout of each club. But I find it much easier to use a putting stroke and stronger lofts then trying to manipulate my sw or lw on chips.

I’m a 2.8 right now and use a niblick chipper.

I don’t care what it looks like it’s all about the score on the card.

I played an inter club match against a scratch from across town on the weekend. I pulled out my chipper on the 9th hole and he said “oh that’s an interesting club never seen a low capper use a chipper”

His attempt to get under my skin didn’t work. I chipped the shot to an inch tapped in for birdie and ran away with the match.

Lowest score wins. Period.

I’d carry one if I had room in the bag. I’ve messed around with them and it’s easy to get very good with them.

I thought that too. I did a count after I ordered it and debated some clubs.

I hit my 3wood twice per round on average and my 4 hybrid twice per round. I know I have more greenside chips than that. I carry a driving iron too so I had wiggle room at the top of my bag.

Long story short if you really do chart your round and for me it’s a 75 average minus 30 putts I can figure out the other 45 shots in a hurry and make a decision on if it’s worthwhile to add. I keep lots of stats and hit exactly 11 greens on average (61 percent) so I know I’m gonna have at least 7 up and downs in a round. Even if half are bunkers or flops you are still gonna hit your chipper for half. Add in par fives you get near in two or a par 4 in one and you might be like me and end up pulling the niblick 5 times per round lol.

I love my chipper! It matches a ton of other clubs in my bag, which is really nice for looks, and its loft is just like all other chipppers - around 36*. Mine has an "8" stamped on the bottom for some reason, but it really gets the job done when you want to hit shots like the ones you describe. I can't imagine a bag without one.

Exactly... How the heck do you use a "chipper", something that's designed to hit the ball low and get it rolling, from 75 yards out?????!!

From the fringe... Sure. 30 feet around the green or from a false front... Why not. But I don't see how this club would benefit anyone from 75 yards out.

Maybe you’re winning club championships cuz you’re sandbagging that 2.8 lol. 67 with a chipper def deserves an asterisk.

Was scavenging some used equipment sales bin with my uncle. He's >70 years of age and, how to put it, par is well protected from him. He picked up a chipper for EUR5 and put it in play and has kept it in play a couple of years now. He's happy with it and pretty effective around the greens. I've never tried one myself but that doesn't mean I wouldn't benefit from one.

Over the years I watched my dad's short game go bad. I would buy a chipper and send to him on birthdays. The e-club, maltbys slider and some others. I have since inherited them, and now that I am reading this topic, will gather them and try them. I have never done this, if nothing else will bring back some great memories. Thanks.

Do him a much bigger favor and send him a 56 or 58 PM grind -1/2 inch and a traction (ex. cord) grip. That would probably make a huge difference for him around the green. It does for most moderately-skilled players.

Or just tell him to choke up on an 8 iron. Cheaper shipping than a chipper and identical result.

As someone whose poor shots around the green are mostly yips or semi-yip jabs, tops and whiffs I’ve tried one modern expensive and one old-school cheap “chippers”. Result of a yip with a chipoer is just as awful as a yipped SW or 8-iron. Pass.

What's the advantage over chipping with an iron of the same loft?

How is it used from 50-75 yds?

This is what I was wondering also. I consider myself pretty good chipping around a green with and 7 or 8 iron. But I would think a chipper would come in low and hot from outside of 40ish yards.

Its identical to an 8 iron except its more upright and shorter. In other words, just choke down and stand closer to the ball. Its exactly the same thing. Most players try to hit those shots holding the club at the butt and taking a stance meant for an iron shot (which is meant to go up) and therefore struggle and think a chipper matters. If you set up correctly to hit a bump and run shot (gripping almost to the metal, about six inches closer to the ball, ball slightly back of center) with a short iron, its identical (and it doesn't make you look ridiculous).

The thing about a chipper is that it's the same length as a putter and most have the same grip as a putter. That's the good, now the bad, the ball comes off low and fairly hot and while it has a modicum of less chilly dipping the shot, you have to be authoritative with the stroke and that unto itself can be 50/50. I've tried one and at a course with flat greens and it was not bad, but my home course has all greens with fronting slopes. Not very large slopes, but enough that if you don't carry the ball over them, it either hits the slope and stops or bounces sideways off line. If I did carry the slope, it ran hot and long, so no joy there. I found I was better off using a putter and getting the ball rolling, as opposed to having the ball come off the chipper elevated and hitting into that slope. Instead of a chipper, if your so inclined to try one, choke down on a hybrid or 3/5 wood and use a putting stroke...........

Putting a putter grip on a chipper is illegal. None of them have the same grip as a putter.

My course is rated just under 69 and the slope is only 115. It’s a pretty easy track but the flip side of the “easy course” argument is that I would need to be under par for most of my handicap counting rounds to be a scratch. I don’t do that often for sure!
