Chippers - time for you to fess up and tell the truth.

Let’s face it.... most of us are hacks and need all the help we can get. I usually shoot in the low 80s on most courses. The other day I was golfing with a friend and he pulled out s Cleveland 3s chipper.

 

I tried it on multiple shots from 75 yards andvin and the thing was incredible. I am currently shopping them on eBay and will prob have one in the bag in a week or two.

 

The weight and feel of the club is awesome and it it almost impossible to hit. Bump and run shots are too easy as well.

My chipper is my 8 iron. It was hot and cold for a few years, but after a tip from my pro it works again.

 

On a recent trip, I canned a 96-foot and a 30-foot chip shot for birdies in consecutive rounds.

 

Set up is is play the ball back, with weight on front foot. Keep a firm left wrist, lead with the left hand, and just brush the top of the grass with the club. Grip end should be slightly ahead of the ball at impact.

 

In the old days I chipped with a 7i, but when I got a new irons circa 1994 I switched to an 8i; stronger lofts had made the 7i "too hot" for the shot.

I agree, depending on the lie, anything from putter, wedge, 7/8 iron to hybrid.

The (3) 2011 Niblicks are fixtures in my bag!...Best defined as Hybrid Wedges...These are 'scoring' clubs for sure!

 

Lofts are 42* (PW), 49* (DW), and 56* (SW) - All are 35" in length and feature more upright lies than conventional wedges. The clubheads are heavier than conventional wedges as well! People expect these to be great around the greens, but the big surporse is how deadly accurate these are on full swing shots.

I've carried a chipper for punching out of the woods.

I've never used one for chipping tough.

I'm not in a hurry to get the ball on the ground.

There are no spike marks and stuff, or even any contour, in the air.

I tried using a chipper for a handful of rounds. For me, it was not a panacea.

 

But I would have had no problem keeping it in my bag if it had been.

My chipper is my 8 iron.

 

I also use my 8 iron but with a putting grip and stroke.

 

I wouldn't mind trying the Cleveland chippers, like Bobcat posted, but my 8 iron has served me well enough to resist buying one.

Chipping around the green and from 50 yards was my weakness for a while when I was using just my 45 degree PW. Fat shots that went no where or thinned shots that flew over the green were standard. I finally bought a 50 degree Wilson wedge with 8* bounce....

 

One, I really like the club and what I can do with it. Most importantly I use it A LOT and for many types of shots. I thing that second point is key. You will never get good at using a club until you force yourself to keep using it and in a variety of situations. Ill use it from 5' and from 50 yards. I can really open the face of that club and drop shots dead or close it and fly em'.

 

I tried a chipper, never bought one, but I see the attractiveness. I also think if you really focus on practicing with a good wedge that fits your game, that will eventually work for you. My bag is at 14 clubs, so I have no room for a chipper.

They day I start looking at chippers is the day I walk into a bowling shop and go full two ball bag and wrist guard.

My chipper is made by Ping, it has a "W" on the sole, itʻs money from 50 yds in. Donʻt think iʻve ever played with a low cap using a "chipper" i wouldnʻt laugh if they did, thatʻs part of the reason theyʻre a low cap, the short game.

I have played with a few guys over the years that used things like the "Alien wedge" they couldnʻt get up and down from a phone booth, remember those ? Ha

Anything that's on tight grass I've been bumping with a hybrid using a putter stroke. My game has completely left me this year and I am trying to piece together something that works for now.

Chippers are a club that you "fake" with another club. I toe-down my 9-iron, grip a bit down, and there it is. A chipper is effectively the club that I'm impersonating.

 

If you don't carry 14, fine. If you do, learn some versatility!
