Project X in Wedges

I am going to be buying new Titleist Vokey SM7 wedges and I am considering switching to Project X in the wedges to maintain the same shaft from my irons into my wedges. When I switched from DG to Project X in my irons I really liked the change. I have never played Project X in a wedge before and can't find anywhere where I can demo wedges with that shaft. What have peoples experiences been with Project X in wedges?

I bought Mizuno T7 mainly because they don’t upcharge for C Taper Lites. I don’t know that it made much difference. Granted, they feel the same as my iron on a stock, full shot. But, as I learn more about scoring I find that I very rarely hit stock, full shots from wedge distance.

I have 6.5's all the way through my wedges and love them! I think if you like them in your other irons, you will love them in wedges also. My 2 cents man...

I have PX 6.0 from 3 iron to lob wedge . Very happy with my current setup.

 

Love the consistent feel and looks.

I play 6.5 4-PW plus GW. My SW and LW are px 7.0 8 iron shafts which I also tipped 3/8. I love the control the shafts provide me. Swingweight is D8

They work fine, but I find them better for full swings than for partial shots. Whenever I have used PX in my irons, I tend to keep DG in my wedges. Just preference.

If you get the same flex as your iron set, they'll be perfect for full swings but a bit stiff around the greens for some shots. I play 6.5 in irons and 6.0 in wedges and it's the perfect balance as long as I'm not trying to crank 110 out of my 60*.

What would make PX play stiffer on partial swings than DG would be on partial swings in an equivalent flex?

Lots of people opt for the softer flex in wedges, like the guy above with 6.5 in irons and 6.0 in wedges.

 

Another option is keeping the 6.5 for wedges but using 9-iron shaft, or even using the 7.0 but an 8-iron shaft.

 

Even if you just use the same PX shaft through the wedges, it will play slightly softer because the wedge headweights are higher. Ultimately though I don't think it makes a huge difference.

The Vokey camp suggests that unless you really like a special wedge shaft, match what you hit in your irons. Fine-tuning suggestions.

• PW and GW. Same shaft and flex as your numbered irons.

This may be a stupid question but can you soft step a stepless shaft like PX?

Yes, and PX does have a wedge specific shaft. So you can use the 9-iron shaft to soft step the wedges.

 

I can't remember exactly how they come out on the scale, Howard Jones has some old posts going through the numbers. I know he said the PX 7.0 8-iron shaft in wedges comes out to actually play around 6.0. So I would guess that using the 6.5 9-iron shaft in wedges would also come out to somewhere around 6.0.

 

Don't need to get hung up in the numbers too much. It honestly doesn't matter that much.

there is so much loft on the wedge the shaft is almost meaningless when it comes to numbers.

I didn't see any distance gain or loss by going with PX shafts in wedges but a more familiar feel . With them being stiffer feeling than most it did take an adjustment period around 70yds and in- what helped was increasing swing weight with some good old fashioned lead tape. I went down to 6.5's in my 52, 56 and 60 with no problems.

 

I get more feedback w/ PX shafts than Dyanmic gold or others which is what I prefer.

I don't want my wedges to play much stronger or weaker than my irons I don't think.

 

I hit my clubs in general pretty far so I end up using both my 54 and 58 for full shots frequently (as a full shot with my 58 carries around 110 yards). That said I also use them around the green to chip/pitch and for partial swings. Which club I use for that will depend, as they have varying bounce, and also depend if i want to take it in higher or lower but generally speaking I would use the 58 more for partial shots.

 

I was fitted for PX 6.0 in my irons which are Ping i200. For reference my driver swing speed is around 109 mph. I tend to be more of a one speed player and my transition isn't super quick but more quick than smooth.

 

I will be putting these in SM7 wedges. My current setup is SM4 wedges with DG Wedge Flex shaft (S200 I believe). The current set up works pretty well, I think if I were to change anything (and were to stick with DG) I would probably move to S400 in the wedges.

What made you decide to play PX in 53 and 58, but DG in 64?

 

I happened to have a couple of Satin Finish 7.0's and thought they would looks sick in my custom Sugarloaf Social Club/National Custom Works wedges.

 

I have the S400 in my 64 because it's a black onyx in a black PM grind. I think it looks cool.

 

So my wedge shaft choices are based entirely on looks. I just know I need stiff and heavy. I'll probably end up switching out the PX shafts next season for S400's because they do feel a touch light at times, but that's probably more the space between my ears talking.

A "standard" installation in the same flex as your irons, will result in a "softstep" effect in most wedge designs....because they have longer hosels and bottom of bore to ground measurements.

PX 6.0 is "only" 120 grams, and never mind need for SW adjustment,(1-2 grams of head wgt) 7 to 12 grams of shaft weight is more important, so ask yourself if you think going down in shaft wgt is good or not.

Not sure...because I have a quick tempo and tend to be more of a one speed player heavier has usually been better for me. As a result, I wouldnt have thought PX compared to DG in my irons would have been a switch I made but since the switch I have really really liked PX, so maybe the weight factor isnt the biggest deal since PX is lighter than DG in general. What would your suggestions be based on what I mentioned in terms of what PX and how to install it in my wedges? Thanks again!
